I have a few, small, oh so very small questions...

*AHEM*

1) Can you tell us what Video Card you guys are currently running it on? If not can you tell us if it is a new video card?

2) Have you completed at least 70% of the models?

3) Are a majority of your models textured?

4) Have all the weapons been programed in and are usable in-game right now?

5) Aproximetly how many types of enemies are there?

6) Is the game divided up into Episodes or just levels?

7) Is there more then one boss battle?

8) Is there a Battlelord in this game?

9) Are there any Cameo's?

10) Who does Joe play the voice of?

11) Anyone else on the 3DR team doing voice acting for DNF?

12) What do you put on your pizza?

13) Can you give an example of how interactive DNF can be or is?

Thank you for your time.

Indeed, hehe, Nacho, Kaiser's ressurection. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Seriously, why do you bother asking those questions if you know George won't answer them? I think some of them are alright though but from what I've gathered George isn't going to bother sifting through them answering the ones he thinks appropriate. He does enough of shit filtering when he's making games. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

you have good taste of questions, Nacho.

all we need to do is wait for George to say "you don't think I'm going to answer that do you? I can say yes to most of them though".

What makes you say he won't answer them? I've seen him answer Kaiser questions, which can be pretty intense. There's a possibility he answers those too, and I hope he does. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

i'd say most of the answers are "yes". their graphics cards are probably right below a radeon 9700 they dev with. somewhere in the area though. never fear though, they've probably built in "ultra high" graphics settings much like doom 3 did that only current or future cards can run.

George Broussard

>>1) Can you tell us what Video Card you guys are currently running it on? If not can you tell us if it is a new video card?

9800 Pro's, some 6800GT's and some 6800 Ultra's.

>>2) Have you completed at least 70% of the models?

This is hard to say, as a model can be anything from a prop (like a chair, microwave, etc) to the tons and tons of models that go into the levels as architecture to flesh out a level.

A ton is done. We have hundreds of props that you can place in the world, and the artists just continue to pump stuff out.

>>3) Are a majority of your models textured?

We complete them as they go in, so the ones that are done, are in.

>>4) Have all the weapons been programed in and are usable in-game right now?

Yes. In, with animations, sound pass, and final textures. We'll probably add a couple more as we go, and there are some whacky ideas we want to explore, but all the base guns are in and we could ship with what we have.

>>5) Aproximetly how many types of enemies are there?

15 or so, and working on more.

>>6) Is the game divided up into Episodes or just levels?

Levels.

>>7) Is there more then one boss battle?

Yes.

>>8) Is there a Battlelord in this game?

He was a signature bad guy from Duke 3D, so he's be a popular choice to bring back http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

>>9) Are there any Cameo's?

Not sure what you mean by cameo.

>>10) Who does Joe play the voice of?

Nobody.

>>11) Anyone else on the 3DR team doing voice acting for DNF?

I doubt for final voice work, no. Maybe a couple here or there.

>>12) What do you put on your pizza?

We ordered Dominoe'swhen we were in line for Episode 3 the other day. Got a large cheese, peperoni, and supreme.

>>13) Can you give an example of how interactive DNF can be or is?

Very. You can play with everything.

Actually, George never said that the Battlelord is in. Seeing as he was willing to tell us the current number of enemies, here's hoping he won't mind answering another question in the same vein:

We know some types of enemies will be returning from Duke Nukem 3D, but will any enemies unique to other previous Duke games be in Duke Nukem Forever?

He didn't exactly say that did he http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Besides you've got one of the fastest cards out there what the hell makes you think it wouldn't run [to some degree]? A newer/faster/more feature ridden piece of tech would always be 'better' for bragging rights!

I reckon all the excitement over Prey (looks cool BTW) has loosened the pressure on 3DR and DNF information. Great to see your post George!

Yeah, he didnīt say that, but I donīt think that they will produce DNF without testing (playing) it some times!
We donīt know how advanced the graphic is, possibly a 6800U will be the minimum when it gets released! (I really donīt think so, but itīs 3dr, everything is possible http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

I wonder why Nacho didn't ask if there is a rideable mule in the game or not, he would have answered that one http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif and many people are wondering that.
and thanks nacho for asking about the battlelord http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif good luck with rogue threat

but isn't 15 enemies too few?
even if there are 20 in the final game, then you have the more than one bosses, so around 17 kinds of enemies, I'm afraid it will be fighting the same enemy over and over again.
like in serious sam.

I'm happy about the more than one boss though.

I only hope there will be a devastator, George? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif come on, I spread prey, look here how excited most of them are:

http://www.hlfallout.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=38073&st=0

is there a devastator (yes/no answer, no cryptic answer http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) and can you also say "yes" or "no" if there is a battlelord in DNF, instead of it would be a popular choice to bring back http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif thanks http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

sometimes I don't understand, why people can't think about what George said and what he didn't say.

">>5) Aproximetly how many types of enemies are there?

15 or so, and working on more."

Think about what a " *types* of enemy" coul mean?!
A type means nothing else than for example a "pic cop" as one type as an enemy. So, it could be possible to have complete different categories of this one type of a "pic cop" ...and so on. And then you have the second "type of enemy" and as well again different categories of this second typ of enemy...

possible?

Cerberus_e
05-22-2005, 07:44 AM

Think about how many there were in Duke 3d. I swear it wasn't more than 20, yet it didn't bother me one bit. It's all in the level design and what the monsters actually do. Serious Sam gets boring because the monsters just spawn out of thin air every now and then. In Duke3d, they go to the bathroom and watch porn http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's what I call interesting enemies

Both Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 have around 20 enemies. Doom 3 has the most, I believe, including the bosses.

IMO, DNF should have at least 20, not including bosses.

3DR should have a "Click here to donate a pizza" on their website, that would be funny.

Doom 3 enemies :
Zombies (in different shapes)
Zombie soldiers (a few variations of them)
Imps (!!)
Lost Souls
Cacodemons
Demons
Baron of Hell (or are they Hell Knights?)
Small annoying spider thingies (are there 2 versions of those?)
Babies
Mancubuses (sp?)
Those guys with extendable arms (also a minigun version of them)
Archvile
Chaingun zombies (they freak me out)
Revenants

Hmmm... I only count 14, did I leave any of them out? Of course, if I counted every version of every enemy as a seperate enemy (like that guy did with HL2), I'd get some more.

Half-Life 2 enemies (http://www.halflife2.net/index.php?page=enemies)
18, including certain vehicles. I suppose you could count the Scanner as an enemy, as it can blind you. If so, then 19.

Doom 3 enemies (http://www.planetdoom.com/doom3/enemies/)
22, including the bosses and the Tick.

Cerberus_e
05-24-2005, 05:54 AM
and people complained about always the same enemy in doom 3, and there were 22+variants on zombies and +Z-secs
so DNF with his 15 enemies is even worse than HL2, which was even more repititive in terms of enemies than doom 3.

I changed my thoughts no, 20 isn't enough anymore, I want 35, that's not too much if you recycle every enemy from Duke3D and some from the sidescrollers including manhattan project http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

of course duke3D's main villain has to be back in DNF!
it's not the battlelord, nor is it the queen, cycloid emperor, overlord or assault (fat) commander.
...it's the turret!
that was really the main villain, I would be disappointed if there is no whole story about him in DNF, the turret wants to take over Earth! fantastic!

It's not a question of the sheer number of enemies, but how they're used. Far Cry only had like 5 or 6 basic enemy types.

I didn't like a few of Half-life2s enemies. For me they were partial even boring. And again and again the "combines". The enemies of Half-life1 were more interesting, especially because you have to fight there against "real" soldiers from the army with faces! Not like in Half-life2 against some masked anonymities and without any interesting aliens...

For Doom3 I can't comment anything because I didn't finish the game.... simple tooooo boring uiui.

I think, if you have some real interesting enemies in DNF 15 could be enough. But they have realy be to be interesting and with special characters and behaviors.

1) thinks its funny that people mocked nacho and then george answered. FACE!!!

2) "You can play with everything"....what about underwear....Kaizer....aw never mind...'all to easy'

3) Isn't the real question on enemies not the number but how many SPECEFIC enemies there are. I think one of the cool things about Duke was the different look of the enemies and all, most games now just have different variations on the same things (in some cases works like in farcry and in other boring like in HL2), Duke was like a zoo (heck remember that level).

My 2 cents and I'll take my change

No, 22 all in all. It's a shame though, because 22 is a good number, that the Imp, which wasn't even varied itself, was used so much.

I hope this won't be the case with DNF. Like gameplay scenarios, enemy encounters should be varied as much as possible (as long as it fits with the context of the location and story).

no, there has to be ANOTHER reason why duke3D's enemies weren't repititive.
they weren't all different types.
the assault trooper and lizard man have the same recog sound.
the battlelord roaming sound is the same as when the assault trooper died, only a bit extended.

Duke 3D had less enemy types than Doom 3. Count 'em.

But the way in which the enemies were used is what did it. In Doom 3, not only did you fight imps every two seconds, but it was always the same type of encounter - they teleport in ahead of or behind you.

In Duke 3D, traps were fewer, farther between, and much more interesting.

Im hoping his look hasnt changed since the original duke3d. SOOO many games today all have the same look for the main guy: basically some jerk inside some huge bio-suit type thing. Sure the color of the armor/suit changes from game to game, but it all looks pretty similar to me. If you shoot the guy from halo, should blood spray out? Or should it be sparks? Motor oil? I dont really like that.

I like how duke is just some dude in jeans and a red tank top. If you shoot him with a shotgun, you know hes going to feel it.

Just little thigns like this make games more fun. Sticking a Halo type helmet (or was it a robot's head?) on the neck instead of a real human face really takes a way from the game. How can you show facial expressions?

That toilet idea is awesome, but I think you should also be able to shrink yourself down enough to enter the nose of a pigcop for some inside adventures. You could wreak a lot of havoc in there.

Also, I think it would be cool if you could shrink pigcops and put them in microovens. That would be satisfying.

I would also like to be able to expand myself with the expander and walk around as a giant squashing Pig Cops.. it would be more practical than having to shrink every pigcop in your way.

And did you forget the fact that the Serious Sam games are only about having a large number of enemies, and not all that much more?

BTW, try as hard as I can, I really can't recall 40 actual enemies in SS2... not even close

This reminds me of the tripe you read on the Bluesnews forums (read it for the first time yesterday)... 15 enemies is quite enough if used properly, and even then George said they were making more.

Plus, you'll note that he said 15 TYPES of enemies - not 15 specific enemies. A type could encompass several different actual enemies (like in Duke 3D, you had a pigcop, a pigcop in an aircraft, and a pigcop in that green ground vehicle)

People really need to stop jumping to conclusions and putting down everything 3DR touches - it's getting tiresome.

Nevertheless, SS's gameplay style is wildly different than anything resembling Duke, and the point still stands

I don't think number of enemies has anything to do with a product's quality.

Somehow I think that HL2 with around 20 enemies will sell many many more copies than games with simply more enemies.

<font color="EEBE87">
True, but it is repetitive and frustrating to face the exact same enemy repeatedly. I mean, even the ghosts in Pac-Man were all unique, but from the very beginning all FPS have had legions of cloned enemies. This is even more disconcerting when you fight against human or humanoid opponents.

When facing down 20 pig-cops it would be much more aesthetically appealing if they all were different from each other. For example, have some be taller, shorter, fatter, and skinnier with maybe 2 or 3 different styles of snouts and hair cuts swapped among them. Maybe even randomly add varying pouches/accessories to their outfits.

Having just a couple swappable geometry alternatives for different faces, bodies, and accessories combined with dynamic coloring of textures (i.e. tinting clothes and skin textures at run-time) and dynamic scaling of geometry (to change the proportions of existing models) would produce a staggering variety of variations for (I'm guessing) very little extra effort. They would all remain pig-cops, but each would be an individual.

Is it possible to have random variations of the same enemy?

Is it technically or economically prohibitive in a FPS?

Pretty please with sugar and Nitroglycerine on top...

Thanks

If that's what you really want, you'll have an orgasm over Serious Sam 2 - I've heard they're going to try and set a new world record for number of enemies onscreen at a time with about 300 - 400.

Duke dosen't need hoards of enemies onscreen at a time (like SS)... 3-5 at most is quite acceptable for normal enemies, and more if they're tiny, swarming enemies.

The ammount of enemies in a game shouldn't be the selling point. Who cares if Serious Sam 2 has over 40 types of enemies... it's all about gameplay... and George isn't going to let us down, even if the game has been in production for nearly 10 years. Good things come to those who wait.

Cerberus_e
05-31-2005, 12:42 PM
I thought of something

I think what makes variation isn't having 100+ different enemies.
a game can be awfully repititive with so much different enemies.
it's about how much area-specific enemies you have. and how long you wait until all enemies are introduced.

I was already tired of shooting lava monster before I got to the lava caverns in serious sam - the second encounter.

for the first time you play a game, having enemies introduced every once in a while, and introducing the last, some of the toughest, types of enemies only at the last few levels of the game.

but then you don't have much replay value. you need to have area-specific enemies.

if you go to the woods, you need to have 2-3 enemy types that fit into woods (gorillas, camouflage soldiers, ...), and then never use them again in the game. then you go to for example the mines, you need to have enemies that fit there (mineworkers, dragons, ...).
if you go to a high-tech lab, you also have enemies for that region (turret, sentry drone, ...)
then you have the basic enemies you use over the whole game (pigcops, battlelords, ...)

that has more replay value because you are looking forward to fight against some types of enemies again, that you didn't encounter anymore after finishing the area where they are specific for. you may for example want to fight some more gorillas after finishing the game, because you only fought them for 1 level.

Serious Sam used every type of enemy in the first few levels, and re-used them for the rest of the game, which made it repititive.
now if they saved the lava monsters until the lava caverns it would make a big difference.

15 types of enemies?? What does that mean?

1. Does it count as three if one pigcop shoots a shotgun, one flies a helicopter and one can teleport?

2. All pigcops are counted as one type of enemies, all ocerbrains count as one enemy etc.?

Just wondering? If five of the types of enemies are just the same enemyskin just with different color shirts and different guns 15 types arent much.

How many different kinds of people, dogs and other kinds of "active enviroment figures" will there be?

If the 15 type are really different it shouldn't be a problem.

Somehow I think that HL2 with around 20 enemies will sell many many more copies than games with simply more enemies.

Did HL2 really have 20 enemies? It honestly felt more like 5 to me.

Many of the enemies were very similar to eachother. For eg, there was like 10 'different' enemies who were all basically exactly the same - just humanoids with weapons (either pistols, smgs or shotguns). Some of these guys were wearing grey pants, some blue, and some white. Are you counting all these tiny differences as separate enemies?

I'd say there were about 13 enemies, there were the combine, zombies, headcrabs, those crazy headcrabs, the really fast zombies, the zombies who tossed headcrabs, manhacks, antlions, antlion guards, helicopters, combine gunships, barnacles, and striders.
I know some of those were variations on an enemy type, but I would say that there is a very big difference between a regular zombie, the fast zombies, and the zombies who threw headcrabs.

the small percentage that also developped Duke3D is boss enough over the new people apogee got over the course of years.
for example George Broussard is already a long time with apogee, he can put enough "pressure" on his team to let DNF be true to its predecessor.
I'm not worried at all that the game won't be anything like Duke3D because only a small part of the Duke3D team is working on DNF.
after all... the 2001 video was like Duke3D, right?
the 1998 movie not really, but that was probably just the mines part http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Alright, I will try again. So please answer if you can. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

1) Have you actually started sound work as in in-game sound? (Not voice acting)

2) Have you started any voice acting yet?

3) Are drivable vehicles in?

4) Does the Jetpack drain like in Duke3D or does it last forever?

5) Which weapons from Duke3D return?

6) Anything from the original two Duke games re-appear?

7) What is the main enemy in the game? (i.e. is it human, alien, robot etc.)

8) What is the average load time you would say?

9) Have you played DNF in multiplayer yet? How is it?

10) How long do you think untill you begin to design the box art?

Thank you.

Just for fun, i'll make as if i were George, and come up with a bunch of false answers... just for fun and to kill time untill he actually shows up... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
*Ahem

1) Yes, we've already recorded most sounds... Most of them are not in-game yet however... Those sounds include the following as an example of how different the gameplay will be through out DNF:
- Eating pizza and Taco-bell food...
- Strippers
- Stripclub music (many variations)
- Strippers
- Casino ambience, and ambient music inside certain bouldings
- beer drinking sounds
- Fat strippers
- And weapon sounds

2) Yes we have... Mostly Duke, but also some NPC's like the GSPCS, and strippers if you give them money etc...

3) Yes ther are LOT'S of drivable vehicles in DNF... Not controlled by the player however...

4) The jetpack drains beer from beer canisters, and they can also regain your health...

5) All weapons will be back... Except for the pistol, shotgun, chaingun/ripper, RPG, Expander, pipebombs, devastator and tripbombs... i've already confirmed the shrinker and the freezer... But i won't tell about the rest of the Duke3D arsenal http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

6) Yes, the exact same textures will be used pretty much everywhere in DNF... Prepare for some hardcore nostalgia...

7) There will be some aliens to start with... But mainly you'll be fighting zombie soldiers and several spawning enemies in mid-battle... We don't think other game companies have thought about this type of enemies before...

8) About 5-25 minutes...(on high-end machines that is)

9) There's no multi player currently in DNF... But we're planning in releasing a DM-only pack later on Gamextream shortly after release... Expect to piss in a toilet, and kick it after your enemy... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

10) We've decided to steal Elmurfud's box design, and claim it as ours... he can't sue us anyways... Were too rich... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tinyted.gif

Only if the Jetpack can be defined as a vehicle... We don't know ANYTHING about vehicles that are controlled by the player yet... Although, i guess because of the 'insane interactivity' we'll be able to use stuff like cranes or similar... which also could be called a vehicle... It ain't drivable however... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Just examples.

Eh this isnt HL with the headcrabs. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I say there should be the standard pig cop and maybe the swat pig. I dont think there should be any other types of pig cop.

20 sounds right. I dont think you really need anymore that that. Duke isnt Sam.

No, this a been answered before, 3D Realms will do their own beta testing, that shouldn't have changed with the restarts since that has nothing to do with the game itself.

The demo of SS2 was not that good IMO.

No Multi Camera angles, it has been confirmed that the game will be through dukes eyes only. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You guys still don't get it do you? Why do you think only 3 people from the original team are left? George has abused his talent and they walked out on him. thats the reason why he removed the bio pages so that people wont start worrying about DNF's fate. Yes he hired a new team, but the truth still remains. They walked on him becuase he deleted the work that they worked long and hard on. And as you all know, it kicked ass. We all saw the 2001 video. If I was Lee Jackson, I'd walk out too.

I hope it was worth it George!

Stop lying, the levels from the 2001 version where only "early shells". They had to restart, the whole DNF team has never quit. We can confirm the entire level design team from that trailer has remained, you are confusing Duke3D with DNF. You are beeing extremely presumptous in your post.

I'm sorry but I wish I was lying.

I'm not confusing anything. I've been following DNF since it was anounced back in 1997. I know all the members that were at 3drealms before the massive walkout in 2002. Infact, the old bios are still up somewhere on the internet. Just google for them. You're just not facing facts.

The guy who made Grabbag, the main song for d3d, is gone and so are a lot of others. These people were all working on DNF before 2002. Why would they suddenly leave with no mention whatsoever other than the fact that they no longer work there? Because its nobody's business who George pisses off, thats why.

Facts/proof please. I'm not saying it didn't happen period but it's pretty hard to believe the way you're rambling. If you really know so much, then tell us who left. All you can say is "the guy who made grabbag" is gone. Well, wowie! Where's "the massive walkout"? Really, you have no idea what you're talking about.

That's just conjecture on your part. You don't why they walked out.

I don't think there's anything suspicious about the fact that only 3 members of the original team remain - it has been 10 years after all. Even if they did all walk out because of the restart, how did George abuse his power?

They weren't even two years from shipping at that point, the tech was in a mess, and the levels were just shells. He didn't just one day decide to delete everyone's work. Instead he was forced to take the only option that would put DNF back on track - a restart. Now this wasn't a snap decision, and most of the time in 2002 was spent getting the tech solid so they did know how to go forward content-wise in 2003.

Oh, and Lee Jackson is no longer in the industry any more - I wouldn't speak for him.

I'm sorry but you guys are really forgetful aren't you?

"When its done in 2001"

2002 comes, bio pages go down, and a little later a revised faq confirming that many people who were working on DNF are no longer working on the project.

Yes I don't know what the exact reasons are, but I can guess.

I never said he abused his power, I simply said he was abusing the talent that he hired. I'm pretty sure a lot of them got upset when the textures/music that they had worked on for the past 4 years was deleted.

Of course, I always hope that whatever did happened, happened for the best. We will have to wait and see about that.

I thought that most of the duke 3d team left within 1-3 years of the game. Most of them were still working on it before the restart? I never heard anything about a big walkout. Many of them left earlier to work at ritual, some id, I think, N- Space and other companies I believe. Todd Replogle left in the research stages of DNF. Was it confirmed that most of the original team was still there in 2001? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Right, all you can do is guess. The restart was in early 2002, the bio pages went down around August 2002, for an unspecified reason (perhaps when one person left, perhaps following the loss of multiple people, perhaps following their decision to hire a lot more team members).

And in fact they hadn't worked solidly on the game for 4 years. Even following the move to the Unreal Engine, content was scrapped in mini restarts, as the tech was updated. This is why they'd made so little progress by E3 2001.
