Could use some help here, hav'nt slept for 2 nights trying to figure this thing out, this one's a long story so bear with me for a moment :/

My specs -

1800+ AMD Athlon
Asus Nforce 266VM mobo
768 MB DDR [formerly 256]
Geforce2 mx400 64 mb
2 hdds, an old 40 gig, and a 2 month old 200 gigs
Windoze is installed on a partition other than C, [in G that is] on the 40 gb hdd

1. Ok, so I got a new 512 mb ddr stick of ram from my local boxstore to add to my current 256 mb ddr, running windoze xp I turn on my pc after installing the thingy the BIOS detects my new stick nice and fine, shows up as 768 and stuff, it goes ahead then winxp does'nt boot saying "ntfs.sys is corrupted" I say "sh**"

2. Reinstall the damn thing on another partiiton, reinstall all drivers and stuff, but after installing the detonator drivers it restarts and says the same damn thing "ntfs.sys corrupted"

3. Sustpecting the RAM I remove the new stick and it starts fine, I put in the new stick again and remove the old one and it starts fine, I put in both sticks back in there and it starts fine :/

4. I install Call of duty from my CDS, I know they work 'cause I use them all the time, the whole thing copies itself, I start the game and it says "default.cfg not found" I install again it says the same thing, I run the setup from my original cds and it says the same thing, I say damn it, and install half life, but this won't copy only from the cd to the hdd :/

5. I download avg from one of my friends on the lan and install it it says the file is corrupted, WTF???

I download again and it says the same thing

6. I restart and it runs chkdsk runs on start, fixes all drives and the Master file table or something and winxp starts

7. All errors were on ym new hdd since I install all new stuff there

8. After about a dozen restarts and errors of copying files I disconnect my new hdd. the problem continues on the old hdd

9. I change my data cable, I run a bad sector check on both hdds, I do a partition magic error checking on both hdds, and fixing FT errors about a dozen times I pick one partition on my new hdd and format it using a quick format

10. After restarting I run a chkdsk on the just newly formatted partition again it fixes several errors, I say damn and format using a full format, and it runs fine at last

11. I pick another partition to low level format [damn my data!!!] and reinstall windoze xp on one of the nicely formatted partitions

12. Everything runs fine for about 3 hours

13. Problem persists

Help.

Your problems do indeed sound RAM related. I suspect shuffling the sticks around simply made it so that essential files (ntfs.sys, for instance) didn't get loaded into bad portions of the RAM.

No problem. Before sending the stick back, you might want to go into CMOS and make sure it's running at the proper voltage and timings. Your motherboard might not be reading the information from SPD correctly or something. Long shot, but on the off chance that it works it beats having to wait while the stick is being replaced.
