I have had some probs with half life, its spec auto detection thing has made some bad judgements on the games video options for me [medium texture detail, high shade detail {resulting in frame per second dips}, flashlight not lighting enviroment and not being able to see certain items more than 30 cm approx away from me]. My specs are as follows:
Processor:2.8GHz
RAM:510 MB
Video card memory:64 MB [Gives you a clue why i call my self retro gamer http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif]
But the real prob is when i try to adjust the graghical options, i get the following error message:
The instruction at "0x241f94f7" refenced at "0x00e30cc0". The memory could not be "read".

If some things can't be seen until you're a certain distance away, then that's normal for your 64 meg video card, and there's nothing you can do about it.

I think Fat John's right. You'll want at least a 128 MB card for HL2 to look correct. For a low budget I'd suggest a GeForce FX 5700 or equivalent ATi card (don't know what that would be, not an ATi user).

I have almost the same config, (centrino at 1.6 ghz) and same ram, same video memory, and i can play hl2 in medium quality.

good... your system is
High settings....you will not meet.

I have got one idea, some one with a healthier computer could give a copy of their HL2 config file [when they have turned on every thing temporarily on the lowest quality in HL2]. With it i can bust open the config files with readme [trust me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif, it works], adjut my half life 2 and counter strike config data and with luck it will be working better.

I may have worded this wrong, i meen to say that when i attempt to adjust the video options in the advanced menu on Half life 2/counter strike, it crashes when i click on the apply buttons and shows the above error message. so now im stuck with framerate dips in certain areas of hl2 and never being able to play multiplayer on HL2 and CS as my framerates bomb in their arenas.

it counts as a fault of half life 2 and source games as i shouldnt be getting this crash and error message regardless of wether my computer is 64MB or 256MB
