Awesome! Half-Life 2's physics are second to none.

Aren't HL2's physics Havok or something? Is it the engine itself, or did they implement some other program into the engine for the physics? Just curious.

I think it's just the implementation. Havok is surpassed by Meqon, but the large vehicles (i.e. truck cab) are more believable than any other physics object in any other game.

Well, they're second to anyone using Meqon. Also, the physics glitch at the end is kind of amusing -- in real life, I'm pretty sure giant slabs don't roll around a bit as if they'd fallen on top of a couple of giant marbles or something when they land on a human. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It's based on Havok, but Valve added some significant improvements to the Havok code.

Nonsense... It depends on weight of slabs

You say his post is nonsense, yet the latter part of your sentence neither discredits nor backs his statement.

it bobs around like that because the human ingame does not behave like it would in real life. the humans in the game dont go "splat" and dont break any bones and dont get squished. they behave like solid objects and the slab reacts acordingly. if only someone would make the humans go all squish when, wel squished http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah, I was thinking about that earlier. It would be cool to have the mesh and its hitboxes deform under weight, et cetera.

But then we'd also need physically simulated brain and entrail matter that splatters all over the place, to make it look realistic. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif

well still, wooden objects in HL2 break if you slam something that weights a lot on em, but if you carefully stack something on say a wooden box i don't think it breaks, it needs impact with high velocity to break it. would be nice if ragdolls would gib under pressure

laffer

I'd love to see that too, but it would be really hard to make it look realistic. But come to think of it, it does certainly not look realistic now, so even if the gibbing didn't look very realistic, it would be better than how it is now.

you make it sound as if its a bad thing.

my gues is, that in a few years, maybe even next years we`ll get some experimental deformation stuff like what race games did in the past with dents and stuff ( look at carmageddon for some good real time deformation effects! )

duke nukem 3d had a nice squish sollution too, not too gory and satisfying http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I sometimes wonder why there can't be a "isn't this a cool thing in HL2?" without it turning into a "Hl2 has shitty tech" type of thread...

I think the same about the Doom 3 forum. It seems that on both sides, threads get locked or deleted because of it. I'd rather both sides just agree to disagree and leave it alone because I'm tired of every other post being some HL2 vs D3 crap.

I say we all just put Drazula on our ignore list. Regardless of which engine you think is superior, Draz's posts are all calculated to start flamewars.

then just dont give in to them, if you reply its not draz` fault that there might be a war of sorts.

some people just try to hard to defent something. they become rather fanatical about it, wich scares me.

Well, the reason is, because HL2 Source engine isn't really that good, it's actually quite horrible, but it was used perfectly well to make the Single player game. The same goes for the original HL, The engine was butchered to the point it worked for what Valve needed to accomplish, when you stand back and look at it, it's really deformed and ugly.

HL2 does some neat things, as long as you keep it close to what the engine was built to do. Which in my mind and opinion, isn't much.

I think we'll all have to wait a couple more years, for a couple more generations of engines before we get one that does everything we expect. By then, we ought to have VR systems and things beyond what we imagine now... If we don't destroy ourselves first.

How about: blahblah DNF..

See, they use DNF in races to indicate someone Did Not Finish also it's the acronym for Duke Nukem Forever. So I'm taking a shot at DNF for it's long development time too and suggesting it'll get canned all in the same sentence. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hehe, that's what makes it better. If he just made a level and drag 'n dropped a brick, rotated and then copypasted it around a map it wouldnt be the same. IF he put these things up by hand. I've tried doing it and I can't get those metal plates to stand upright without locking them with the physics gun.
