View Full Version : Greatest/most memorable game moments

What are the most exciting / exhilarating / memorable moments you ever had in a game?
One of my most enjoyable game moments would have to be the magic carpet ride in Shadow Warrior (1st episode 'Enter the Wang', 4th level 'Dark Woods of the Serpent'). Still remember jumping onto that carpet in the cave; the way it floated down through the volcanic caverns just left me utterly stunned. Never before had I experienced anything like this in any game. Truly 3D Realms has done an ingenious job.
Another exciting game moment I had would be the journey down the subterranean volcanic cave in Might & Magic: Clouds/World of Xeen. (I seem to like exploring volcanic caves. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) Winding your way ever deeper down those lava-filled caves to see just what you'll find at the end, all the while having to deal with hostile creatures in the form of demonic heads floating in the air -- this is just fun. (And there's a real pleasant surprise waiting at the end, too.) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Co-op Quake, Dissolution to Eternity. Fighting the dragon. My son ran out of the cave to attack the dragon and got knocked back into the cave twice as fast. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I still laugh when I think about that.

Dissolution of Eternity was terrifying, BTW. Even today I rarely succeed in navigating the hallway which selects the 'hard' skill.

Thief: The Dark Project, when starting the return to the haunted cathedral level and hearing all the groans of the undead and thinking 'That doesn't sound nice'. Then climbing up into the rafters and actually seeing what was between me and my objective, thinking 'Oh shit.' That level really does wreck your nerves.
Also, my first ludicrous gibs in Rise of the Triad. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

Playing soldier of fortune 2 with the random map generator, on the hardest skill. Finishing both Ultima VII parts. I had played them hundreds of times over but never actually played long enough to finish them. I finally did and then I wanted more http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Playing NES after many years and telling myself "I am going to beat Legacy of the Wizard" and then actually managing to do it! That game was the hardest damned game I ever owned back in the day and with a few hints off a website I managed to beat the thing. Man did it feel good seeing that ending (no matter how crummy it was) I also felt the same beating Kid Icarus for the first time not too long ago...now thats a hard game.

Yes, that's the part. Simply the most unnerving part in a FPS ever, Because it came completely unexpected. They tried to redo it in Unreal 2 with that elevator scene, but it didn't work.

Playing Max Payne for the first time was surreal somehow. Had trouble getting the sound working at first but finished the first level after starting before I could tear my self from the game playing it without sound! It had some kind of magic feel to it, felt like you could almost touch the mood in it or something.

My first memorable gaming moment was when I played Winter Games for the C64, I was so impressed with that game it's hard to describe.
The first time I played The Last Ninja was a similar moment, I couldn't believe such graphics were possible, and the music was stunning too.. and most important of all, the gameplay was fantastic.
Playing Duck Tales on the Amiga was also a great moment for me, it was the first game I ever played on the A500 and I was just lost for words. I soon found out the game was rather dull, but the first impression was really good. I'd never seen such graphics in my entire life.
Another one was when I bought Monkey Island for the A500.. it came on 4 floppies!! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I was so amazed by that game (and rightly so), and that has got to be THE moment for me. Everything was good about that game even though I didn't know how any English at the time http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
One more moment regarding Monkey Island is when I discovered there was more than one part, I would've been more than happy with only the first episode at that time (which took me ages to finish as I didn't know English at all).
When Monkey Island 2 was released, I was impressed before I even ran the game, it came on 11 floppies :O
I didn't like it as much as the first one, but it's a good runner-up to the best game of all time.
Another moment was when one of my friends bought a PC (386 SX40 with 4 MB ram and VGA). He played a game named Space Quest 4 and that game also really impressed me right away. I'd never seen 256 color graphics in my entire life, and Sierra were the best ones at making games look great back then. I didn't know how it played as my friend found it boring and didn't want to play it much, so I had to wait for quite a while before I discovered that this game is awesome in all other regards as well.
When I first played Wolfenstein, I could hardly believe my eyes either.. 3D graphics was completely new to me back then. And I was equally impressed when I first saw Doom, I played that game to bits.
Oh, and another moment was when I first played Duke3D.. the "high res" graphics looked fabulous and the insane interactivity made me love that game much more than Quake (oh I forgot that one, I was really impressed by the true 3D graphics in Quake too, but I found the game to be lacking in the gameplay department).
The first time I saw 3dfx in action also completely stunned me, I thought Hexen 2 was the most beatiful thing ever back then.
The introduction to Half Life (and the rest of the game as well) also really impressed me. It was something new, I'd never seen a FPS quite like that one before.
Oh, and I almost forgot about Donkey Kong Country, that game amazed the hell out of me with the great graphics and cool gameplay. I loved every minute of that game.
First time playing against a friend (in D3D), got internet soon after that (we palyed at his house with a null modem)

Hudson, you're giving yourself too much credit here. There were 3 reasons why I got Chaser, one was because of XPlay's preview of it......"An FPS with shiny walls....."and Gamespot's review. The 3rd reason was because my copy of Black Mirror wouldn't work......to be more precise the guy's whole inventory of Black Mirror didn't work....so I finally got....Chaser.

Playing Duke3d over modem for the first time.
Playing Ultima Online. I was so hyped when I read about it, before buying. So many funny events, including a time when AndOne made a newbie character on my account and PKd a miner, tamed some guy's horse in town after it went untame and rode it out of town while the guy was cussing and begging for it back all under an hour.
There are too many to list in Swat 4. Each match is funnier than shit, especially when one of us or all of us die.
Empire Earth - This one is a long story and probably one of the famous ones around me and my pals. Here goes: We always played co-op against the AI. It was Me, my pal barbos, gonzo and Wario. Typically, barbos and myself are the better of the bunch at epoching so we are normally well-prepared against the AI attacks. the 3 AI began attacking Wario who is a bit better than Gonzo at the time, because Gonzo always took forever to upgrade in epochs. He had a fascination with just making priests and no other army. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif Welp, Wario is raped early on in the first 3 epochs and runs south to Gonzo's gates and town, since he was the closest and he would have had to risk going through enemy territory to get to the safer towns of myself or barbos. Wario manages to get a few peasants down to gonzo and a knight is close behind chopping his peasants up as he goes down. The gates are locked though, so Wario cant get safely into Gonzo's fortress. Now anyone who plays Empire Earth knows that gates are unlocked by default. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif Wario is screaming for his life so that Gonzo will let him in and barbos and myself are as well. Gonzo eventually replies back a few minutes later that he doesn't want to let Wario in, because then he will get attacked as well. HAHA! After much yelling and going on back and forth, gonzo finally lets Wario in the gate. Barbos and I eventually get enough of an army to Gonzo's town to fend off the attackers that followed Wario down there. Wario eventually gets a town going in Gonzo's area, while barbos and myself go after the main town that attacked Wario and Gonzo, to let them catch up in epoch. We take out one more AI and there is one left and by now, Wario is up to the atomic age. At this point, I notice Wario sending a ton of planes over Gonzo's area, after I told him to attack the last AI. Well, since I don't have the teams locked, anyone can betray (although it never happens). Wario immediately declared himself hostile towards Gonzo for the heinous acts from earlier. Wario's planes nuked the shit out of Gonzo's town. Gonzo had AA turrets and everything but could not figure out why he was not attacking back. I was talking to gonzo about where if any of his peasants were, so they could run to my town for safety. He has one remaining peasant hidden safely behind a tree in a nearby forest from me. I ask him where it is act, so I can escort it to my town. He tells me and then no sooner can I get there, then I see about 15 of Wario's helicopters beat me to the peasant. I was laughing so hard at this point, because Gonzo was dumbfounded on how Wario knew where he was. I asked Gonzo if he ever declared hostility towards Wario and he said "no." I said, well, that explains why none of your AA turrets shot down his nucelar bombers and why the rest of your army never attacked back and just sat there taking an assraping. It also explains why he could still hear our team chat, because he was still considered an ally to Gonzo. LOL! To this day, gonzo has never forgiven Wario. It's become a story told over and over at our gaming campfire, especially before Empire Earth 2 matches. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif They are still at odds with each other over the event, because every time we played afterwards, Wario would betray Gonzo and attack him as soon as he got up to the Atomic Age with Nuclear Bombers.

Wamplet, that's priceless.
I remember playing Command and Conquer: Generals with some of my friends against some AI armies. One guy was China, and had build 10 or so Overlords. The other guy was USA, and had some of the smaller USA tanks following the overlords. They were in the same room, and whenever the China guy wasn't watching his tanks, the US guy would force attack one of the Overlords and blow it up. That proceeded until there were only 4 Overlords left. Finally, the China guy realized what was going on, and nuked the USA guy's base. This only encouraged the USA player to drop his three particle cannons (conveniently all waiting) right on the Chinese power plants. With both guys tied up fighting each other with their nukes, finally the AI thought it would be prudent to attack China. China's base defenses were out of power, and he lost half his base to the army before my other friend and I who had simply been watching the civil war came to their aid to beat back the AI armies. It was hilarious. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Recently exploring a sea ship in Thief 3, with zombies in it and haunting, green-haze corridors. Zombies don't usually creep me out in games or movies or real life, but the way I thought the groaning/moaning was convincing enough when they're idle and especially when they attack, they kinda growl and it sounds freaky and not dumb http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Way back in 1991 when I got my first PC, I played a game called "Ancient Empires," from the Learning Company. This was an "edutainment" game that was more fun than the pure entertainment games of the day. Maybe it was too much fun - TLC discontinued it.
This little guy explores chambers from different ancient civilizations, collecting artifacts, beating monsters and solving puzzles to get from one chamber to the next. You can play in Explorer or Expert mode. The first time I played, the game recorded 270 tries (the # of times you die) when I finished. Then one day I finished with a 1 (never died)!
That game was hard! And graphics were good too - the guy cast a shadow wherever he went. I wore that game out and now I wish I had a way to play just my favorite chambers, but you couldn't save on any specific chamber.
TLC also made "Operation Neptune," but after a few times it wasn't nearly as much fun as "Ancient Empires." And it won't even run on my present PC.
Another memorable moment was earning immortality in the 1990 game "Gods" which amounted to 12 extra lives and sent you to start the game over again. It took me six hours because you couldn't save and I had to just play straight through!
Anyone ever play these or remember them?

Gotta second most of those. Especially the silent hills and most of all Shadow of the Colossus which has to be the most breath taking experience I've ever had in gaming.
Other games.. hmm.... RE4 the first battle in villiage. Most of the boss fights. Fahrenheit, the room falling apart.

Holy crap, I remeber that game! I first played it at school and loved it so much I got my mum to buy it for me for Xmas! That game was more entertainment that education.
One of my favourite gaming moments was playing Tie Fighter for the first time. Stepping into the Tie cockpit and hearing the tie laser blasts was awesome.

Falcon 4.0 Allied Force
So I'm in Instant Action air-to-air. After I spanked a Tu bomber (I think), I
go looking for some fighters to down. I got about 6 kills, and the last one was this Mig-21, and a relentless one at that! I kept noticing a blip on my RWR ahead of me. I couldn't see anything on my radar because I hadn't set my altitude right (I've been meaning to resetup my X-52 for that). Before I knew it, the blip was BEHIND me. I tried to keep it ahead of me, did a loop towards ground but that blip would always dissappear, then reappear behind me.
Finally I looked behind myself and saw this guy:

We played cat and mouse for a few minutes, he never fired at me and I could never get him ahead of me to fire at him. So I went low to see what he'd do. Note him behind me:
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/6016/f42tg4.th.jpg (http://img176.imageshack.us/my.php?image=f42tg4.jpg)

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/3623/f43eb5.th.jpg (http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=f43eb5.jpg)

the castle and the first level of mario64 (that's in my head so bad, as i got it once it hit the shelves) it was so amazing for it's time.
secret of monkey island - insult sword fighting
full throttle - fighting other bikies in the canyons to upgrade weapons and also getting through the mine field with energizer bunnies :D
goldeneye64 - shooting baddies in the leg to watch them jump around in pain. duel rcp's, the facility level.
Curse of Monkey Island - blood island and skull island so many fantastic gags in those stages of the game. (the entire game rocks but those 2 parts really stood out)
Maniac Mansion - Getting captured by one of the eddisons, stealing the cheese form the fridge, feeding the tentacle and finding a trail of blood in the kitchen which eventually leads to the chainsaw. (man that game creeped my out back in the day.)
Super mario bros 3 - getting the leave for the first time, and discovering the warp flutes.
Zelda 64 - going forward in time.
Leisure Suit Larry 7 love for sail - finding "where's dildo" and the easter egg to see Drew Baringmore's boobs
there's more memorable moments in games i have, but i can't think of them atm.

The metallic clanking of his mechanical leg scared the crap out of me, even to this day.
The moment after you step out of the train in HL2. It was so awesome, I still remember Dr. Breen's opening speech by heart, even though I only play the game like once a year ;)
And of course a lot of other stuff from many of the games I've played. I guess "memorable" means "things you remember" and I can still remember shitty lame games I played 8 years ago, so I guess that counts.

I use to play Titus The Fox, an old PC game at a friends house when I was about 8. One day I saw it in a store and bought it. Now, we could never pass the second level, the game was pretty tough, but very fun. So when I got the game, I read the manual before I got permission to play on the computer... :\.... WHAT? I was EIGHT!
Then I found out why it was so though, we never knew we could pick up items and throw them to kill enemies. We just dodged them all the time. When I first picked up a beer bottle, I was so excited... man... good times.
A good memorable moment.

NOLF2- The man-crate/man-cake/man-chowder/Manhattan-style man-sauce torture machine
Deus Ex- EVERYTHING.
Jedi Outcast- Firing up the lightsaber and getting a slow-motion kill for the first time.
Half-Life 2- The whole Sand Traps sequence. Avoiding the sand and staying on the rocks to avoid the antlions was very evocative of the Tremors movies. Delicious.
What about when the 2 Barons of Hell came out of those columns and had that animalistic/bear like yell - that always freaked me out :insomnia:
Now that you mention that.. Yeah. First time I got to that level I was simply TOO afraid to even fight them :D And they looked so strong! Of course, knowing how many rockets it takes to kill them helps.
Sometimes I wonder why the Hellknights in DooM 3 don't look like their originals at all...
I liked Doom3's hellknights.. They weren't really scary but they were very badass. Also the addition of the soul cube when the number of hellknights started increasing was a nice touch.. Added a bit of strategy. Kill some zombies and imps, and then you got to a room with a Hellknight and an Archvile.. Who would get "cubed"?

I liked DooM 3's hellknights too, but it would have been cooler if ID made him a different enemy... Maybe him as a hellknight, and the original DooM hellknight a baron of hell? I'm pretty sure DooM 64 was the first DooM game to introduce the hellknight (original was baron of hell). Just my opinion...

Yea first skaarj encounter was realy cool with all the lights going out and knowing somethings about to happen but not knowing what(that was the first one right?).
Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the whole game, and it came less than 5 minutes in.
For me, I'd say the opening tram ride in Half-Life 1 stands out as one of my most memorable gaming moments. First time I played it, I thought it was a prerendered sequence until I accidentally bumped the mouse and was stunned to discover that it was real time!
Another would be "Mona's Funhouse" in Max Payne 2. Probably the best level in a shooter where you're never actually required to shoot anything.
Speaking of Max Payne, I think the ending of the original is probably one of the best game endings ever. Dropping the radio tower on top of that bitch's helicopter and sending it crashing to the street below was definitely one of those stand-up-and-cheer moments.
I also really enjoyed the moment in Morrowind when you find out that your character really is the Nevarine.

Space Quest 3 - the ending
Yep, best one of the series in my opinion.
I'd also like to add the 2nd case of Phoenix Wright Justice for All -
Firstly when you think Maya may have commited a murder and secondly when the whole case starts to come together at the end. Finding out that Mimi stole her sister's identity was a great twist.

Yeah, it definitely was of a very different calibre, in terms of design compared to most other action settings. Still a little eerie and haunting to play through. :o
