Watching the 2001 E3 trailer for DNF it at one point shows him holding an crab-like alien creature, then tearing one of the legs off..
Now i'm wondering if this wasn't where the inspiration for the "grenades" in Prey came from? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Agreed. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I always assumed it was an enemy in the first place, and that duke was just torturing the little sucker! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But I can see why people think Dukes was a weapon and HH used the idea for Prey, but Gryph posted Georges quote, so that should explain it. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

One thing I'd like to note, is that it seems to be another shameless ripoff of a certain piece of media. Namely, the Half Life "head crab".
I enjoy little touches like that, and the Evil Dead style chainsaw, but sadly, they canned the saw.
Weapon cameos, if you can qualify them as such, are even better than enemy cameos.

Weapon cameos could be just for maybe a few minutes or a short little action sequence in a game, to change the pace a bit. The chainsaw looked cool in that shot. If they took it out, I will be disappointed, because it is original to have a weapon cameo. I mean who has done that before?

Or you could have them as a permanent weapon. Every time you start up the game, it's glaring at you, and you can't help but laugh!

I never thought it would fit Duke's attitude, anyways.
Also - I think they wanted to avoid yet another debate about Duke's likeness to Ash. Or it just didn't fit the rest of the game anymore .... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Don't know but I don't feel it's too much of a loss.

I'm glad that you also noticed it and started a thread about it, Hudson. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I was wondering about that too when I first saw the Prey E3'05 vid two weeks ago, but I didn't know how to state my confusion. http://www.smiliemania.de/smilie132/00000113.gif
"We're not recycling ideas. Some ideas are independently created. Theirs is a weapon, ours was an enemy."
I can't agree with that!
In my opinion Prey stole from DNF! When people will play DNF they'll say "Oh look, the headcrab thing with the pullable leg, they ripped it off from Prey.". I don't like this and I think it steals from DNF's glory, because it's nothing original anymore.
Shame on you, 3DR!!! How could you allow HH to use YOUR ideas as a base?! This is a SCANDAL for all Duke fans! I'm pissed! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

But they're different creatures. Just because they're both small and insect-like doesn't mean a whole lot.

Hey, it doesn't matter how this f**kin' thing looks like and if it's a weapon, enemy or whatever!
It's a headcrab thing with pullable legs! DNF was the FIRST game who introduced and used something like that! We all have seen it in the DNF E3'01 vid! Period.
Next thing 3DR tell us is that Prey will use a Shrinker weapon and a Battlelord enemy... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif

Well it's a good job what's in Prey isn't a headcrab thing, isn't it http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Look at it this way, they'll probably be other small creatures like rats and when you pick them up you'll be able to kill them in interesting ways. So it will be a "lets pick this creature up and see what Duke does with it" thing. It will feel natural.
When Levis was founded in 1826 and was the only company/brand in the world who made jeans then it was something special.
Nowadays thousands of companies/brands exist who make jeans, no matter how the jeans look like or what you can do with them.
In effect Levis jeans are nothing unique anymore. In fact, there are jeans brands these days which are trendier than Levis.
The same applies for the headcrab thing in DNF and Prey imo. I hope you understand the analogy.
Let me add s.th., so you can comprehend my negative reaction...
Look, there are Duke fans, such as me, who want DNF to be a very unique game with never-seen-before features and stuff. That is what makes DNF ultimate to us, among other things.
Now imagine how such type of Duke fan is forced to watch how another game uses a feature which was meant to be unique in DNF. It's a total disaster.
Ofcourse there are different types of Duke fans and everyone will see it from his/her own point of view. Some don't care and some feel pissed now.
Shit happens. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

So what's the unique feature that's been taken away, that you can pull the leg off a monster?
dark_angel
06-04-2005, 08:21 AM
Pulling the leg off a monster is a gameplay feature that should be implemented in Prey and not in DNF due to the organic type of the Prey's weapons!
So we shouldn't be surprised to see such feature in prey!

Who really gives a damn whether everyone else thinks Duke is copying it? As long as you find it fun what difference does it make? When duke comes out many people are going to say "THATS IT???" while us fans will probably love it. The same went for Manhatten Project. I think its a great game and I don't care if it didn't seel very well...

Imo DN:MP wasn't nearly as good as i expected... The one-liners were too cartoony, and the movement/control of Duke was VERY limited... But i like it anyway... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
