Kickass little mod that lets you play the Shareware version of the original Doom on a interactive control panel. Appears to be fully functional and, aside from a lack compatibility with Ultimate Doom/Doom 2, complete.

Nice! It takes the game within a game to whole new level. Maybe they can get Duke 3D in there too. I can see a time where people will keep all their classic games in Doom 3. It's probably more compatible than XP! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Long live the Doom 3 OS! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Would it be possible to do something like this in HL2 ?
Oh and how about Prey ?
Imagine playing lameprey in Prey ?
Whyd you want that in Half Life 2?

I haven't got Half-Life 2 or Doom 3(or a computer to run them). I was just curious. Also I wasn't specificly refering to playing Doom in HL2, Just any game at all.

Agreed. HL2 shouldn't have games within it. Screensavers, yes, but not games. ( http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif j/k).
Actually, since HL2 requires an internet connection, they could have an in-game browser. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do you know if it could be done ?

I agree. Half-Life 2 is so much fun that I can't imagine wanting to play another game while playing it. With Doom 3, however, I can certainly see how you might want to break up the monotony by playing its superior predecessor!

Can't be done.
The level geometry and lighting is already suffering due to poor optimization, now you want to kill it further? Hmmm, now that I think about it, it might be done as AI node. But the whole game would have to be a scripted sequence. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I agree too. If Half-Life was included as a minigame in HL2, no one would be motivated anymore to go on with HL2, they would stay where the HL computer is in the game http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I bet it can be done with VGUI2.

Nope.
All Source & Steam applications use VGUI for displaying windows, dialogs or menus.
As a mod author you will most likely use VGUI in the client.dll project to show menus, HUD elements or for in-game displays (on weapons or computer terminals etc).

Iirc, this works by basically hooking into the game engine (doom in this case) and dumping all the data that would get rendered from a screen into a texture. The basic thing that's allowed with 1.3 and it's SDK is that you can now render to a texture, which allows you to do alot of stuff on the fly, and you could combine that with the gui system to do even more.

So basically, this is just running a parallel process with the output being passed to a Doom 3 texture. Hmmm...it doesn't seem nearly as impressive now that the "secret" has been revealed, but it's still pretty cool.

Except it is pretty impressive, considering you could basically plug a custom version of MAME into Doom 3 and create an entire arcade center as part of a map. It's not really limited in what you can do, only in your imagination to use it. It's that sortof feature. It's a pretty friggin big deal.

I don't dispute that. I only said that it's not quite as magical when you understand how they did it.

So you could make it so that you could play HL in HL2 in theory atleast ?

Actually it's pretty much just the HUD/Menu system, versatile, but it doesn't really apply to the game world outside of that, and doesn't allow you to render to a texture, and thus you would remain unable to do anything much outside of those functions (which are useful though).

Ahhh, yep, you're right. When I was thinking about the VGUI, I was thinking of the HUD and menu. I forgot the special case for computer terminals. Ok, so the VGUI is HL2's only chance.

How else could they have done it. That was the first thing I thought of. Doesn't make it any less impressive. There is a big difference in knowing what to do and doing it. These guys made it happen!

Wonder if 3D Realms could do the same for Duke Nukem Forever. I mean, a mini Duke3d game would be great!

mountain man already said that.
and Drazula: now in god mode you can't win anymore in pong, because you can't choose how much the ball goes to the right and left anymore (= how close to the border of your paddle), making it too easy for the computer to catch your balls http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
