Steam problem

yes, for the first time I have a problem with Steam.
when I start it up, it says I can't connect in off line mode.
fact, I never tried to go on line in off line mode, nor do I have an idea how to turn it off and go in on line mode again.
it says I should check the status of steam, well, steam is on line.

next problem: cannot read update news anymore, page cannot be found.

as for the problem, I will get on to it.

EDIT:

go into the steam folder and remove all .gcf files in the SteamApps folder, then reinstall and put them back.

I think they removed the update. You can see it at Halflife2.net.

go to "play games" - right klick to the game you wanna play in offline-mode - go to propeties - then change to "do not automatically update the game" - then close and restart steam

However how will you play HL2 without steam? How will you authenticate? You'll be forced to use some half-assed buggy non-steam patch thats what. There will be no other way....

Hey dude, does that work deleting all those files, I mean Steam has been trying to update everytime I connect to the internet, and its downloading but the progress doesn't even move for like two hours.
