Just wonderin...
as 3DR had much time to plan Prey http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
has a possible addon-on already been thought about and what could its story be like ?

I'm 99% sure there will be an addon, but I doubt they have been planning one yet.

Well it is much easier to plan one than to actually make one. 3D Realms migth indeed have planned on or more addons, the same goes for spinoffs.
However neither 3D Realms nor Human Head have the time to actually be making one now.

An add-on could be done by a new company/ team.
Doesn`t have to be 3DR (doubtful anyway, though I think they would have loved to make Prey inhouse) or Human Head again.

I still doubt they will be making an addon while Prey is in development.

I don't like letting another company do the expansion.
expansions by the developers themselves is much more fun.

Knowing 3D Realms they wouldn't want full control legaly. So I wouldn't mind a 3rd party expansion so long it is made by a quality developer.

When the developer of the original game also makes the add-on it will probably take much longer, considering how long games nowadays take to finish
I`m quite sure that Prey will be successful and that 3DR has plans to renew success while its hot http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I like seeing what other developers can do with familiar material. It's like having a new director for a series -- you get something unique, good or bad, with every episode.

Agreed, RoE for D3 was better (IMO) than D3....
Plus, i don't see how there could be an add-on. Presumably Tommy will save earth by blasting the aliens into oblivion....
As Someone from 3DR has said many a time:
"Why does there always have to be a sequel?"

Prey is supposed to the first games in a franchise. Besided Duke saved earth both in Duke Nukem, Duke Nukem II, Duke Nukem 3D AND Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition.
He probaply did so in the addons, console ports and Duke Nukem Manhattan Project too.
And will do it again in DNF.

There are no immediate plans for a sequel or add on. The focus is on finishing this game and making it as good as possible. If it's successful, then I'm sure you would see the series extended, and there are some outlines for potential expansion.

In my own narrow-minded and uninformed opinion, i would forsee the dilution of the Prey franchise if it went down the same path as Duke has gone.... but then that's me and i don't know squat.

Am I the only one who has an issue with expansions here? It's usually just a shorter bunch of levels with the same cost as a full game, not my cup of tea. Unless I really like the game or the expansion drops drastically in price....I don't get them.
I still haven't bought Battle out of Hell or ROE yet....

I *love* expansions.
I always buy every one of them.
I also love user made maps and mods. When a good game is released, I take full advantage!

I remember that back in the day, when Prey was first announced that more than one would be released, continuing the story.
I know its too early to make any assumptions, but do you think the Prey franchise will be continued with a sequel or two, George? Is it a possibility that HH will continue the series?
Either way I'm just curious about it and I don't expect one because I haven't even played the first one yet. I 'm just wondering is all. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Will I think George meant expansions as in expansions of the series not necesserily expansion packs. it could be both sequels and expansion packs.

but if it's from the same developers, you know it will be as great as the original game.

What would be to problem so long as 3D Realms oversees it and the developer is a very talented ?

How about SDK or other modding options for us fans so that we're able to do our own addon(s)?

What about an add-on where you play as an alien and you have to invade Earth, abduct humans or whatever the aliens will do in Prey? That would be original!
(Man, are we nerds... the game isn't out and we are already talking about add-ons! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif )

I don't have any issues with outside contractors taking over on expansion packs. We've seen some good expansion packs like Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal, Starcraft: Brood War, Sin: Wages of Sin and alot of other games out there! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

thanks for answering !
well, I believe that these outlines will be used - but that`s just speculation.
it`s understandable that with two games still in the making you don`t want to rush things too hard http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think id is a good example of how to do this right. In recent memory (since the first Quake) id has only done one expansion pack in-house: Quake III Team Arena. The rest were done by third party developers. I think it's worked out pretty well. The expansion packs were by-and-large pretty good and it freed the id guys to work on The Next Big Thing™. They also farmed-out development of RtCW which, IMO, turned out well. So it doesn't surprise me that that they went with third party developers for D3:RoE, Q4, ET:QW, and the unannounced Wolfenstein sequel.
I think the idea of delegating development to third parties can work well. It's important that the first party still really cares about the project and that they chose talented developers to partner with and maintain a close relationship with those developers throughout the project to ensure it doesn't go off track. (I think Epic lost sight of this with regard to Unreal 2.) This process also gives lesser-known developers a chance to really be seen. For example, Gearbox got started with Half-Life: Opposing Force and Ritual (then known as Hipnotic) got started with Quake: Scourge of Armagon.
I can see this model playing out with regard to 3D Realms and Human Head. By working with HH on Prey, 3DR is free to spend most of their time on DNF. Working with 3DR gives HH more exposure. From what I've read, it seems that thus far 3DR has maintained a good working relationship with HH: allowing them the creative freedom they need while still keeping an eye on things.
Lets hope it works out. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ever play Half-Life: Opposing Force?
Opp Force was you playing as a marine/military officer. Not alien. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Right. But it was an expansion pack where you played as a member of the group you were fighting against in the original game. Which is similar to what he suggested.

I actually read about a game that will soon be released for the PS2 in which you control aliens coming to earth to get human brains - it's made in the spirit of ..argh.. that movie I can't remember the name of. You know that comedy where those funny looking aliens come to earth and zap everyone with their ray guns.
Mars Attacks! Yay I remembered http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
The game is Destroy All Humans. I just went to their website, and the alien icons that come up when you first get there remind me of the Prey control panels. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
