I've noticed that it's much easier to make a map if I actually have a concept and some ideas. I will first sketch my next map before I start building it. Do most of you guys make a sketch before you start building? Im planning a city map rightnow, haven't thought up a concept though. Please share some ideas. graemlins/wid.gif

Construction site, sewage plant, apartment complex, hotel, restaurant, or just a city block. I have an old city map that I'm probably gonna use in my mod. It requires Atomic Edition.

Wel, your very lucky you asked this at the moment...With Tijmen (from the neigberhood)I'm making a city map. I'm not such a good one in map building but you can use this:
A house to start in, a road (duh) with the yellow stripes ofcourse, a few parked cars, a few firetrucks, a fire, such water pumps, some shops (for example a media shop), a police station and the rest I don't know...

I've never made a sketch for a map, I usually have some ideas about the map's theme and then I imagine how should it look in every place

Hmm, I never sketch my maps before I make them. When I was still making maps I only started a map when I wanted to, you make one room and make it damn nice so you're getting a good feeling about your own map. Then, keep on building till your map is around 500 sectors and think, yeuh it's really becoming something! From this point mostly a lot of ideas enter your head and you can't stop building and everything you make looks cool. Then you find out you're already at 900 sectors. Almost there now. Use your last 124 sectors to add detail and other stuff such as acces cards, enemies etc.
That's the way I used to work. Oh damn me, these aren't ideas.
Well I think there should be some more industrial maps, weird but good looking maps.
Like roger says, I think this would be cool:
You're on a huge landscape were they're building a huge company. Some building are already done (of course the interior is not (this will also save you some sectors images/icons/smile.gif )).
Sand hills are up against the walls of the buildings and you should feel a windy atmosphere. You could make some nice sprite work in this map (e.g make roofs that are not done yet with sprite's and on which you can climb on). All that stuff, I would almost say, damn I wanna make a map out of this, but I'm not gonna do that images/icons/smile.gif
I hope this all helps you a bit.

yeah, sounds really cool. Im currently working on a map where you start out in an elevator and have to find yourself out of a burning building. Think I'll make a sewage system aswell, love the smell. Build has helped me becoming a perfectionist, which sometimes can result in too much time adding details.
BTW; how come u dutch guys are so damn good at mapmaking???

When I made my best Duke levels I used to draw sketches for them. It was easy during school lessons:)
