View Full Version : Maps Design (How to..!?)
Ok before lemme say that i'm a "NEWBIE" for the maps design... And I can't even make one! I'm trying but it's too much simple... I want it beautiful like the Alejandro's Maps images/icons/wink.gif
Okay... Okay... I can make sectors, make door (open and close [any styles]), make tranparent things... But I need to make it professionnal! I need a good Text file that explain (A TO Z), HOW TO MAKE COOL, NICE, GREAT, PERFECT, PROFESSIONNAL, GENIOUS MAPS!
Second thing, Each time I try to make one, after some day i'm working on them, the build seen to be "crashing" (the graphics are going same as a mirror... it fuc* like my old computer images/icons/mad.gif . Do you know what i'm talking about?). It append When i'm erasing a sector... (I'm moving a point on another one and this is erasing...). Can you tell me how can we erase a sector without any "Bugs"? Why this bug come? I try to be very serious but a bug come at the _Good_ moment.
Thanks yo guys images/icons/frown.gif

Well, my friend, I don't know how much help I can be, but I will try...
I do not know anyone who did not start out great. Every builder I have encountered started out sucky, and went up from there with practice, practice, practice.
How to make a great map? Ehh...You can pick up tutorials (there are plenty out there, you just have to look) that will tell you everything Build is capable of performing. But other than that, you will have to piece a map together on your own. You know, practice.
I don't know of any good Build tutorial websites, but I'm sure any of these other fine gentlemen will gladly help.

For Build tutorials and stuff go to http://www.planetduke.com/jsbuild
To make a cool map imagine a cool room/area and then start building, and don't stop until it looks exactly as you imagined it.

^ My, that sounds familiar. images/icons/wink.gif
But yeah, the key is to NOT get impatient and move on to new rooms, focus on what you're doing and keep improving on it till it looks as good as it possibly can, then move on. OF course the first few times you do this you'll get ridiculously detailed, stupidly small maps, but as you gain experience you'll learn to distribute detail where it's needed most and make decent sized maps with awesome design.

Yes spend lots of time with each room. Also take a look at other good levels and get inspiratoin and see what kind of styles they use - however don't copy.

Hello King, click on my sig (SST files) and download J. Bishop's Build FAQs, at the 'files page.
I only made(make) SST maps. I make drawings, and start building a map. I play it, and change the map until it plays very good. Then I do details, shading etc.
I think to have fun with Build is the main thing, 'cause in the end that is all what is left.

I second what BT said. We all sucked as mappers when we first started.

How long will it take for you to develop decent maps? It depends. It ranges from a week to about two months, I'd say. Took me about a month to get good, another month to get REALLY good. I use some rarely used stuff, including something whence the player can bust out a ceiling window and fall into an apartment, gradual shade changing as the player falls down a hole, and smooth shading. This stuff is not as difficult a beginner might think.
Okay images/icons/grin.gif
hmm someone know how to make a "sky" (like the Spin Cycle map in Duke Nukem)?
I searched but none docs about this...
Thanks images/icons/smile.gif
A map example with small Text file that explain hot to make it should be appreciated images/icons/wink.gif
Send it to:
( netzone@ca.tc OR My FTP ~FTP~ (ftp://duke:duke@dukezone.idleplay.net/) )
Thanks a lot! images/icons/wink.gif

Deleting sector that way will get BUILD to crash...(indeed)
Joining sectors J->J is your best bet.
Or delete whole areas with R-Control+DEL. (Save first because its risky)

No, you better first make one *very* (not needed to turn grid lock of) press p on the floor and on the sky, Then make another sector (bigger then the first one) also have two P's and press PAGE DOWN on the sky until your build sight is squished by the ceiling. Then go to 2D mode and look to the window...What do you see images/icons/grin.gif ?

Maybe this will help:
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">

Press ALT+S on the inner box from 2D map mode, which makes this an island sector.[/code]</blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Press "P" on all the floors and ceilings. Drop the outside sector to the floor, leaving no space. Make the red lines of the inner sector pink so that they are impassible. If you leave them red, that will allow the player to go into that sector but be crushed, which is useful for some things.
