Source bashers should check this mod. It is simply amazing what can be done with this engine. Great video. Check it!

Here is the copy/paste from hl2world forums

The recent flood of gamers to Dystopia's web server kicked the team into over drive to put the finishing touches on the teaser video. This 1 minute purely in game video shows off our special flavour of cyberpunk action. This video was created from demos recorded during our nightly playtest sessions and features a backing track created by our very own Graincloud.

We're confident that after watching the video you'll have a good idea of what Dystopia is all about. It includes footage of nearly every implant and weapon as well as footage from both the Real World and CyberSpace areas of Dystopia.

The video is encoded with bink, which means there's no hassle with codecs. It's 24 meg zipped up. You can download it from these locations:

Wow. I can really see myself playing this mod. Are you part of the team? If so, what's your estimated release?

the gameplay looks good, but why would that be amazing of the source engine?
build engine can produce great gameplay too.
so no it's not really amazing what they can do with it.
and it's a trailer, not a gameplay video. that's a big difference

I'm just looking at the screenshot. It's nice but it needs fixing.

The road is too narrow. And I really don't like the way it just . . . ends in the distance. If you're serious about adding vehicles to a level, you need to overscale. A lot. Or there's no room to maneuver.

The building on the left: no one would ever design tiered steps that integrate into a slanting sidewalk like that. I would ditch those steps, add a raised platform level with the door sill and make the steps in the direction of the downward slant only.

They have some solid apparent work, but they got the Originality Award from ModDB.com

If that isn't the dumbest mistake ever in ModDB history... I can't ***** believe it.

CYBERPUNK! Never seen that before!
JACKING IN! Nope, totally new!
CYBERDECKS! Whoah COOL, new!
HULKY-ARMORED-GUYS! Unreal who?!

I don't feel like sticking around at such a place that harbors people that fail to recognize something groundbreaking and award it for being something it's not. Just idiotic.

Meh, it's might be a good game, but the graphics arn't that great. I've yet to see any game top this (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=18350) or this (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=18359) in terms of visual quality or a lot of the many thousands of demos out there. Not to mention that they are all smaller in file size then even that movie you linked.

btw, both the demos I posted only use SM2.0, so it's the same basis as Source, and yet they do SO much more with it!

When have you seen a mod with these things?

There's quite a bit of a difference between a non-interactive graphics demo and a fully interactive game. The demo doesn't have to split its resources amoung things like AI and level scripting, plus the field of view is strictly controlled as opposed to being at the mercy of the random movements of a gamer, so of course the demo can do more visually.

Looks good, but....

- because it is Source I know the actual area to explore is narrow and linear. Especially since they are trying to use NPC group attacks, which don't work in large, non-linear areas.
- because it is Source I know the background is nothing but mini-skyboxes. So the driving part will only lead you to more narrow, linear areas.
- the strength of Source is physics. Did you see any good use of it? Seems they completely ignored that.

Now if you told me they were doing it with Cry-Engine, I would be excited.

The chessboard part in one of those demos is a tribute to Second Reality made by Future Crew (that partly turned into Remedy later on) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What do you think about Twilight War: After the Fall?

I'm not sure, as I don't pay attention to mods much. But similar mods is beyond the point - there are published games that use the cyberpunk setting and "culture".

Yes, but are we talking about original game, or original mod here?

You have to understand the context of the award. As far as I'm aware no mod has ever been released with these features, and all the while CS clones outnumber everything else. So, I think it's fair that this mod won. Not because of its cyberpunk setting, but because of what it does with the setting that other mods don't.

As I see it they're assessing the mod, not the concepts behind it.

Phait

Well, that makese good sense. But I still disagree with the award.

FireFly

Right. I think the aim is to understand why they gave it out, so it doesn't seem so irrational, even if you would do things differently.

phait, who would you give the award to, then?

Cerb, I don't know - I don't follow mods.
