Okay, I'm royally pissed.

First I tried to install Avast! On my new computer, and I get this error:

Buffer overrun detected!

Program: ...d!\LOCALS~1\temp\_av_sfx.tm~a02608\avast.setup

A buffer overrun has been detected which as corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and mus not be terminated

I have tried deleting and re downloading the installer, but I continue to get that error

So next I decided to try to install the Norton Antivirus that came on my motherboard's cd. The installation went fine, but I can't control anything or press any buttons or enable any antivirus ANYTHING because when I open it it says...

Security settings disable Active X Controls on this page

or something like that.

So I hunted through IE settings and enabled every damn active X related thing, changed security to low, tried EVERYTHING, and it STILL doesnt work.

So I tried restarting my computer, and now Norton won't even start up. When I double click it a few seconds later one of those "The program had to shut down, would you like to report the problem?" Thing pops up. I've tried reporting it...and it reports it fine but there's no help or anything.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEAAAAASE?? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

How long has it been since you last checked for viruses, how old is your computer, how long has it been since you have reinstalled windows?

I havent checked for viruses yet on this computer (I've only had it for about 15 days) because I haven't had a chance to get any antivirus program to work, I installed windows on this comp for the first time about 15 days ago, and it has SP2.

So my computer is very new.

Is this an Athlon 64 with DEP? If so, Avast may have a bug that causes an overflow, and is hence stopped by the CPU.

To fix this, perhaps...go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > the first "settings" button and find the DEP section. Switch it off, and run the program again.

Nope, I got an Intel Pentirum 4 3.00 GHz E.E. w/ H.T.

Try AvG, another free (and excellent) anti-virus.

Uninstall everything related to the av programs you've put on. Do a system restore from before you had them on your pc, then check your settings before having another go at installing one. I would recommend AVG from www.grisoft.com (http://www.grisoft.com) to start with - it does seem to be a lot less intrusive than Norton or Avast. You also need to check how your pc is set up from the point of view of admin rights, as this can often cause some of the wierdness you are seeing. If you've been on the web much in the last 15 days you had also best check out the anti-spyware programs around e.g. the M$ one, Spybot Search and Destroy, Hijack This etc. Personally I would do a spyware scan first before installing AVG. I would also look to install that sort of software even before an AV program these days. If you find anything along those lines, you'll have to probably disable System Restore to get rid of it. Once it's 'clean' you can reenable it.
Did the pc come with SP2 already installed - or did you have to download it? It may be in Nortons case at least that you will have to download a trial version and activate it from the CD key if that is the case, as I believe there were some issues with it when SP2 was released - the version you have may not be late enough to have the relevant fixes for it.

Something is preventing the Avast installer from running. It could be the Windows DEP. Try basic stuff first, like do a Scandisk on your hard drive for errors. Then try downloading one of these specialized virus scanners (http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/security/fwavspecial.html) and make sure your computer isn't already infected with something.

I've used Avast for years and I'm really happy with it. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Typically, when DEP is enabled and a program causes the overflow, you get a blue Stop error screen.

Blackice caused that on my pc for a while. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
