Um, why does it look halfway cell shaded? And why are the shadows all squareish? The shadows in the room don't even look anywhere near approaching what they should be considering the objects in the room, especially the pillars.

Honestly, the stuff in the background on the left side looks like something out Tales of Symphonia.

It reminds me of those point and click games with the pre-rendered 2D backgrounds.

the possible options:
- yes, I have bought the best available rig yesterday.
- no, my system doesn't support the bad performance optimization of lost coast, while it does support games that look better.

I'm guessing it's badly optimized because the system requirements are so high, while there are already 3-4 games popping in my mind that look better in my opinion.

Impressive, but valve needs to use a dimmer on those lights. Something tells me Lost Coast is going to try to blind gamers with incesive light so they can't see.

Well, they are just showing what it's capable of. I'm sure the entire level won't be us trying to cope with flashbang vision.

I can understand that, but am I supposed to be happy by being blinded? Really, that kind of bloom isn't that interesting to me. One game that has used it correctly is guild wars. It only happens when something is near the sunlight and its not nearly as blinding.

Screenshots never do HDR justice. The D stands for Dynamic and that's what it is. Every developer tries to get screenshots of HDR where it's really noticable like when you just ran out of a dark room into the sunlight. Otherwise people would think it's hardly noticable.

Also, the screenshot looks jagged because for some reason in most games you can't use anti-aliasing with HDR. Lack of AA is most noticable in screenshots too.

And simply stating your opinion on something isn't trolling, but trying to be witty by flamebaiting everyone is. I wouldn't be trolling if I went into a Doom 3 screenshots thread and said "I really don't think the graphics are great, the shadows look pretty ugly to me". If I went into the same thread and said "looks really ugly http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif" I wouldn't be trolling. My simple honest opinion... that simply looks bad.

IMHO Valve has a lot of work to do to make that look good. And screens don't make HDR look good?! Have you never seen screens of Far Cry with HDR? It looks beautiful.

Some parts of the game will have this affect.

There's 2 reasons why they won't fully implement HDR:
a) They feel the lighting in certain spots is fine the way it is
b) Too big of a data transfer to rewrite the HL 2 code to implement it

I think some people say it looks bad simple because they know its HL2. Remove the gun and hud and tell them a new game is coming and I'd like to know how much opinions change....

Valve has said that some portions of Half-Life 2 will be upgraded to take advantage of HDR, but they say that a majority of the game was designed for and works best with traditional lighting effects, so don't expect to see any drastic changes.

I think that's a terrible screenshot actually. I'm not saying Source is ugly or pretty, but they could have taken it at a better angle and turned on Anisotropic Filtering at the least.

Looks like AF is on. If you're talking about anti-aliasing then AA doesn't work with HDR in most games.

Valve's HDR looks pretty smashing imo, and then some other peopel complain about the shadows, which neither have anything to do with HDR, you guys are mostly complaining about anything other than the actual HDR. HAH and in all honesty you should imo really vut down on the polls, they are annoying and mostly it's just you trying to do some weird joke which really isn't funny.

Nope. I like HL2, there are other games I like better. I think the art direction and lighting in HL2 are great.

It's jus to me the lighting on the gun looks terrible, and the shadowing on the floor is really bad. IMO it just doesn't look up to Valve's standards.

Valve's HDR looks pretty smashing imo, and then some other peopel complain about the shadows, which neither have anything to do with HDR, you guys are mostly complaining about anything other than the actual HDR. HAH and in all honesty you should imo really vut down on the polls, they are annoying and mostly it's just you trying to do some weird joke which really isn't funny.

I think it's ok for you to assume some people are not talking about HDR, but the quality of this Lost Coast level that they're going to release. I think the shadowing is a valid thing to complain about, in this thread, based on it's title.

IMO the jaggyness of the screen has nothing to do with lack of AA i'v seen this effect in many game which use PS effects that cover whole screen (NFSU blur effect) and it's more like it renders the pic through a low resolution filter which isn't nice. I'd like to see video of valves HDR before comenting further.

That level won't fly with HDR alone. Therefore commenting on the actual design should be allowed, not just the blinding effects of the bloom.

To be fair, HDR looks better when you're actually playing the game, especially when it's used to mimic the human eye's adjustment to light (as described in the article, when leaving a tunnel and the light is bright for a second as your eyes adjust).

I was impressed with some of the shots and not with others, but I'm sure these are mostly intended to be demonstration shots to illustrate the difference with HDR on and HDR off as it pertains to the description in the article. For what it's worth, I thought the outdoor shots were gorgeous.

Imo, the lighting in that screens is very wrong, especially at the brightness the light is coming through. Imo, if that area was made in doom3, It'd be more believable too. Although, im not against any of the 2 games, both are equally as good.

I just see no need to point out a something you believe is true on every topic. The hl2 section is maid for hl2 news and fans. Not for people to insult the game most of us love. If you have this little in life to do get a hobby! It's asking to be flamed. If you and some other people did post about how blah blah blah hl2 is these topics wouldn't turn into this. (cough* DRAZ *cough) The same goes for your beloved doom3's forums.

and you say I need a hobby... well... computers is my hobby!
I don't like it when people say that gaming (or computers in general) isn't worth to be a "real" hobby.
they think it's asocial, but that's rubbish, I go out this friday, and next week wednesday.
I don't say you don't consider computers as a hobby, but the way you tell me to get a hobby makes it seem like that

IMO the screens look OK... but like a lot of things with HL2 the HDR effects where sorta "hey it's new, let's put it in every scene excessively"

also take screens of HDR scenes isn't the best promotional material because of reasons already pointed out by other people
(who brought up the "that's where the D stands for" point again? You nailed it!)

oh well, let's see what Valve manages to make of it all in the end.
