View Full Version : DoD-Source getting full attention from Valve

I guess the beta testers didn't care much for just a ported DoD because it seems their redoing the artwork.

For the last couple of months a team at Valve has been working away on Day of Defeat: Source. We'd like to give people some insight into what we've been doing during this time.

The initial plan following the launch of Half-Life 2 was to get a near direct port of the existing Day of Defeat up and running and release it to the community. After this release, the plan was to take the approach of iterating on the art and gameplay of Day of Defeat through the end of the year. We finished this porting work a few months ago, released this version to a small group of beta testers, and then took stock of where we were. We didn't feel like the game was good enough from a visual perspective to release.

We decided to rework all of the content of Day of Defeat: Source before the full public release, hoping that people would be happier waiting for the product to ship while we gave DoD the attention it deserved. We hope our assumptions turn out to be accurate.

Here is the first screenshot from dod_flash, which is the first map that has been given this complete art pass. We'll have more things to share over the next few weeks.

First screeny looks good

I think it's great that Valve decided not to rush this port and add extra content and improve visuals.

You must be really popular in the DNF forum http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dopefish.gif

To be fair, they said it was the first map to receive the full art pass which doesn't necessarily mean it's the only map to have been worked on.

yes but a full art pass isn't excactly something that's done in a night http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

and I don't get the DNF reference?

I do.

anyways, so what's happening to Half-Life Deathmatch: source now that they are working all out on Day of Defeat: Source?

I know it has something to do with "taking long", but what my posts in the DNF forum have to do with it?

How could a crack about a game development timetable not evoke DNF? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Edit: late! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Im not really looking forward to this, imo, when valve work on stuff for source, I thinks its the same thing all the time. I bet we're going to see the same textures as we did in HL2 as well, some tree models...gets VERY repetative imo.

my worst complaint is that everything is so square, and thus boring to look at, I want more detail http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Most games have square houses, and this should run well for all.

It's more of what you "don't" post in the DNF forum that doesn't seem to fit with what you say here.

Nothing personal but it seems like your just looking for attention with some of the posts you make on HL2...i reserve the right to be wrong though. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On a personal note that may help your wondering why i say this,Joe and George don't want me on the DNF forum because i slam their meaning of WID...so i try my best to stay away and just say nothing (and i'm a huge Duke fan)

Moral of the story? (very old) "if you can't say anything good...don't say it at all" unless you want negative attention.

Again,this isn't personal...i'm sure your a loveable creature http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

way to go to let me have mixed feelings about your post http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

no I don't post things to draw attention, and I just thought it would still take a long time, it's not that I will repeat that in every dod thread, because when I think of "Day of Defeat", I don't think about taking long (you don't want to know what I DO think then but that's another story http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
I never comment about WID in the dnf forum, because I have no problem with that, I'm too busy persuading George to include my favourite creatures from Duke3d (battlelords, sentry drones, assault commanders, turrets, ...)
I'm sorry you can't post on the DNF forum anymore (did they personally say they want you away or something? do you still read it?)
oh yes and you are loveable too http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hey did you people know that you will have to buy DOD seperatly unless you bought a silver or gold hl2 packge bundle ? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Bronze and retail hl2 players will have to purchase dod seperatly ( as far as i know )

Also the original CS isnt included with hl1 anymore, you have to buy it seperatly as well http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Is that enough detail for you Cerberus? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I agree with a lot of people on this matter, they're reusing old work over and over again, same textures, same trees.. They've got to put more variety in the levels.

I'll answer it for him:

"No! The helmets are too square!" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As long as I'm not bothered by square/sharp architecture, it's all good since it doesn't add unnecessary detail. It's got nothing to do with the Source engine's limits; they could easily make round corners and shape things more naturally if they wanted to.

Very, very old news.

Yea, I mean paying for something that a company has been working hard on. What are they thinking?
All games that Valve release should be free. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Is it even possible to buy DoD:S seperately?
I know Half-Life:Source can't be bought seperately, is this the same for DoD?

noo the models are good http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

but I have no problem with CS: S and day of defeat since they are remakes.
but don't expect me to be amazed by the graphics or something, because return to castle wolfenstein looks as good as that screenshot, detail wise http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah, we've known about this for months. It's one of the reasons I went with the Silver bundle.

I would laugh if it was. Thats what valve gets for not allowing seperate purchases. Why can't a customer buy CS:S on its own? Why can't someone buy HL2 on its own for less than the bronze version? I don't expect to buy DoD but its a bad decision by them to exclude all bronze and retail cd verison buyers.

Because it was a third party mod then and after Valve picked up the team and the IP, decided to let it remain free.

Valve has put lots of company hours into the game this time around.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure you will be able to buy DoD: S seperatly.

Then don't.

I don't know if I'll buy it either.
Not because I don't want to shell out the money, but because I don't play the original a whole lot, and I'm not sure if I can get more drawn into this version.
