Is there any free program I could download to simply take a few images and make a slideshow in intervals? Nothing fancy...
and if not free, relatively cheap?
Thank you in advance http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Adobe Image Ready isnt free, but really good if you wanna make a gif. Powerpoint is pretty good I suppose, Ive never used it though.
Gif Movie Gear is good, it has a trial at Download.com I think.
Paint Shop Pro usually comes with Animation Shop.
Then ofcourse theres flash, but that sucks for making animated gifs

The GIMP is free. I haven't tried to animate anything in it, but it does have some filters specifically for animation, maybe some other stuff. It can certainly do what you describe and you can't beat the price (legally).

He said slideshow, not animated GIF.
Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) can make slideshows. It has quite a few options for display interval, the ability to add background music, and can output as a windows .scr screensaver or stand-alone .exe file. The only thing it's missing is cheesy transition effects. Also it's free.
For animated GIFs I use Animagic GIF Animator Lite. It's really basic but it's also really quick easy to use. Registration's $30 but since the company that made it has been out of business for a while now, pirating it is about the only option now.

I meant an animated GIF that's basically just a slideshow of a few pictures - not some complex full on animation. But it still needs to be a GIF.

Gypsee Pro or something like that. It's shareware but you can use it forever.
Just takes time to quit.
