Heh, exactly. Well, it's still fun to quest I guess as you can solo most of the quests. But I think there are illegal servers to play on too, at least I've read something about that.
But I wouldn't play on an illegal server, what if it went down? All the trouble I'd put into creating a good char would be gone.

Host a server on your LAN! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Then you get World of Guild Wars. An entire World all to one person and others on your land and NPCs. 4 people on your land, 1 per race. Ah the stupid idea. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Why is it illegal to play off battlenet? Thats a pretty bad move by blizzard because if battlenet ever goes kaputsky then people have to throw their games away. At least Origin/EA actually allow the use of free servers for Ultima Online. If they didn't, I would have been able to play the game. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

It's an mmorpg, theres little point to play otherwise. And they did it that way to make a hell of a lot of money.

Well whatever it uses I still think they should allow free servers. I mean, I think this is one of the only cases were a company is more selfish than EA! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Ummm, you do realize that pretty much all the popular MMORPGs are subscription based, don't you?
Its called a business model. That makes a profit. MMORPGs take money to run and then the company has to deliver profits or else it doesn't have much of a point to exist.

It should be cheaper though http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
They could have ads on the log in screen and funded some of it that way.

Ya, you just don't get it. If there were free servers NOBODY would play pay ones except the people who like to either throw money away or consider themselves "upper" class by having the premium account.
ALL MMORPGs are pay per play. I personally can't afford it so i don't play but it's really stupid to think that they should spend the money developing a product then forking out all the cash for bandwidth and support at no charge when they could be actually making money.

No No....I'm not saying they should stop making it pay to play, but instead take the route origin did. Ultima Online still has customer to this very day....however they still allow free community servers to exist and simply just don't give support for them. In fact there are many themed servers, custom edited graphics and even some different rules (which IMO are better than origins servers)
Blizzard is just being greedy for saying its illegal not to use their server. After all, I would buy the game if there were free community servers...so either way they get more money..

Why are you picking on Blizzard? With the exception of Origin, I am not aware of any company that tolerates community run servers.
As for Origin, Ultima Online is ancient in terms of computer games. The game paid for itself a long time ago, so it's no big deal for them if they loosen up a little and let the community run servers. As it stands, the game really isn't competitive enough otherwise.

I'm not picking on blizzard, I'm just stating my point. Origin knew that they would get more people playing and maybe even prospective business by allowing the use of free servers. As for not caring...hah! What do you call Samurai Empire? Obviously they feel it is still a very large cash cow. In fact, I have heard that the whole reason Ultima 10 (UO2) was cancelled was due to EA being worried it would affect Ultima Online's player base.
I'm also very certain the free servers are nothing new to Ultima Online and have been around as early as 1999 (the game came out in like 98)
All I'm saying is that Richard Garriott was obviosuly a smart enough man to see the good in allowing community servers. After all people still play the pay-to-play...but people like me who would have never bought Ultima Online otherwise...did buy it when the community servers arose. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Wise move by them, and its really interesting that even today EA games allows them to exist.
Should WoW ever allow these servers I would buy it in a heartbeat. Instant sale right there.

You could say the same thing about Steam or just about any other mmorpg. It just sounds like you have a hardon for Richard Garriott.
If the problem is the monthly fee then just get Guild wars.

Hence why I wasn't so sure about buying HL2 or Guild wars, because they won't last forever...
They need to quit making games that live only as long as the company/servers. At least let the fans keep them alive....
I'm sure UO will live long after EA dies (which we all know won't happen no matter how much we want it)

Don't you see, Avatar?
In the future, the games will be BIGGER and BETTER, no need for that ancient crap anymore http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif
But when it comes to online games, I don't see how they could make them last forever.. free servers or not, people will loose interest in them when new games arrive and it will become harder and harder to find servers with lots of players (which is a requirement in order to fully enjoy these kinds of games IMO).

A little paranoid aren't we? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Name one game that depends on a online server model and has had a problem because the company didn't last forever.
can someone give me an example of a famous massive multiplayer online game that has almost no people playing on it today (or the game is discontinued) ?

I've no idea, I've only played WOW really. I had never played any of those games before. So even the oldest ones still have plenty of people playing them? Those games are more addictive than I'd thought http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Yeah, after all I should be trusting in the company who broke away from their publisher and only makes one franchise of games http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Seriously, I'm not the type of person who buys a game just to throw it away in a few months time. I mean...why on earth would I have emulators and dosbox?
However there is a difference with online games because I accept the fact that they won't last. Its a bonus when there are community servers though because it greatly increases the game's life.

I'm still playing City of Heroes. Coming up on a year.
As I understand it, when City of Villians comes out, it can be played as a stand alone game (though still very much like CoH). However, those who have both CoH and CoV will still only pay one flat rate for both games. Never knows till it happens, but that would be all right with me.
