Since the topic of old dead games has arisen more than once, I thought a list of games that have officially gone freeware would be nice. Keep comments to a minimum and post download links to the sites. Only legal freeware!

(Only games that were once retail and have gone freeware, not titles originally developed as freeware)

Here are a few I know of as confirmed legal freeware:

Grand Theft Auto - http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/
Grand Theft Auto 2 - http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/

Why is that? I am simply posting freeware links of games that officially were released from their publishers/developers. They are all legal.

I don't know.. commercial games turned freeware are often better. Also, I feel this is a replacement for all the abandonware threads that have been shut down http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Comeone people! Stop posting the bla bla bla, and stick to the great idea avatar_58 had for a thread. If you don't have a game, then don't post, ok?

Here is one rather un-known game that was first shareware and now freeware:
SkyRoads (http://www.bluemoon.ee/history/skyroads/)

And: Flight Of The Amazon Queen (http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0200586/videogames/fotaq/)

It's about a 75% SilentHill & 25%Event Horizon mixture in anime style. Unfortunately a little short but graphically one of the best freeware games I've seen so far.

I'm just saying that its a very good thing that dosbox gets notice from companies. If more companies realized that dosbox lets fans play their old games maybe we would have alot more freeware out there http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I nominate this thread for stickyfication.

Anyways, Tribes 2 keys were only given away during a fileplanet giveaway before the release of Tribes: Vengeance. I guess I'm lucky I didn't sell my copy of T2 yet. You can still find the game on the net, but I don't know how legit it is, and you can't play it unless you have a key.

Lastly, here's Hidden and Dangerous: Deluxe, courtesy of that guy from that thread... the one that is stickied at the moment... Without further ado:

Yeah, unfortunately even when FilePlanet was giving away the CD keys, it wasn't working for me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I wanted to play the game, or even just download it and save it to a disk with the CD key so I could play it at a later date.

edit: And I agree this should be stickied if posts like mine can be prevented and it can be kept to posts where freeware games and where to get them are actually posted. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Ok guys, you can't pass this one up:
http://derekyu.com/images/games/imok-ss01.png

Jack Thompson made "A Modest Proposal," and this was the answer that my three drunken friends and I had for him: a side-scrolling platform shoot-em-up that lets you mutilate gamers and game developers through 4 outrageous levels designed by Whacko Jacko himself. As soon as the game was released, it was spread faster than cooties at recess, thanks to the profusion of gamers on the Internet. Then we did a bunch of interviews and shit and became D-list Internet celebrities.

And Jack Thompson is still a douchebag.
