World War: In the Balance by Harry Turtledove. It's the story of Earth during WWII being invaded by giant lizards from another planet, the catch being that their weapons technology is only that of the 1990s on Earth, and they're inexperienced warriors who were expecting humanity to fight with swords and can't understand how things could have changed so much in only 800 years...
I can't understand anyone who doesn't read books, unless they're really, really busy or something http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Give a hoot, read a book! Or something http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Funny I own one Dragonlance novel and that would be it. lol
I hardly do any reading. Ender's Game was the last book I read all the way through; before that, All Quiet on the Western Front. Both of them were great.
Counting COMIC books on the other hand...
I own Hsu & Chan: Too Much Adventure!, borrowed JTHM: Director's Cut (so THAT'S what all the fuss is about :P), and have ordered the Squee! collection.

All of them are supreme. I remember staying up really late(like 6:00) just reading. I cant do that anymore, my mood totally mucks up reading and I only read when I have to for school. I can rarely find a good book, but these rock. I want to turn The Pit Dragon Trilogy into a book. It'd rock so hard! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tinyted.gif

Harry Harrison's Bill the Galactic Hero. Almost done with it.
The later books are a little more mature in the writing, as in it's not like reading a character sheet. The first books made me feel like I was playing DnD. (But of course I love DND, so it's not that bad.)

Reading two books at the same time at the moment.
Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind. Very interesting book going way beyond just the music and the silly masks. Really looking at the links to the ancient norse mythology, satanism, paganism and paradigms of black metal. No wonder it has won all those awards.
Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Well, it certainly takes some time to get sucked into this one. Everything is described down to the finest detail all the time and it can be a bit frustrating to read. But who can resist an adventure in the sea!? Yaarrr!!
And just finished reading 2001: Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, Laughable Loves by Milan Kundera and The Incredible and Sad Tales short story collection by Gabriel García Márquez.

Hmmmm, its just that I find that books give you more depth and subtlety than most films and can more easily explore ideas that are unreachable in film alone.
But then they are very different mediums, direct comparisons aren’t really helpful.
Though having just said that http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Slaughterhouse Five was considered unfilmable but was made pretty successfully into one by George Hill. Still I think the film does miss some of the nuances of the book.
To each there own. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

well , reading the start of "in your dreams " i had the fealing that i should know the characters already (though my brother didnt) and allas, its a sequel , so i bought "the portable door" also by Tom Holt..
one of the best books ever !!!11elven...
one of the things that made me laugh out was a sequence , where the two mainprotagonists try to figure out what their company DOES , and the female second lead wonders wether they actualy are
"into mineral rights aswell as minerals"
and the maincharakter wonders
"whether minerals have rights, i cant see a reason why they shouldnt , though i havent seen any mineral rights activists in the streets lately" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
btw , has anyone seen the "everything's illuminated " trailer on apple?
i read the book and was flabergasted at the reviews of it which quoted the book to be "extremly funny"..
and it looks like they will try to spin the movie that way ..
(note , i didnt think the book was meant to be "funny" in a comical way , the only "funny" thing in it , is the way the ucrainian lead uses wrong or invented words speaking english..
(the look of the flic looks great though , and "that hobbit guy" seems to choose quiet "special" roles lately(i know his name , couldnt bother to look up the spelling though http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

The Prince and The Discourses, by Niccolo Machiavelli.
I just started the third (and final I believe) book of the discourses, just about done. Some of it can be dry but a lot of his thoughts about the behavior of sovereigns and/or republics both influenced (directly or indirectly) the creation of the US constitution and also provide insight into the current state of affairs in the United States.
Although the changes in culture and technology have somewhat limited the application of his material, people really aren't too much different these days so I have managed to get a lot of good brain food out it.

What next, Dawn of the Dead Play-Doh?!?!?)
Now, leaving aside the movie being edited down from a much better version into a form that Frank Herbert himself disowned, would I be okay borrowing my housemate's copy of the movie, or would it spoil stuff that happens in the future books (like Messiah of Dune), which I also want to read?

I would read if I could stop skimming. Besides I prefer the books with the pictures, because a picture says a thousand words, according to a film commercial or maybe some philosopher, I'm not sure. In other words the picture books are quicker. I think I might have the A.A.D.D. Or I'm careless. Or I say I'm careless because I'm in denial of A.A.D.D. Possibly suffering from accelerated bordom syndrome, a condition I just made up, I mean I don't think it exists.
I stay away from pop-up books though, because erecting things arouse me, sexually.

I'm halfway through that right now but I got sidetracked with other stuff I need to return to it, it's reall good stuff. All the others you listed are on my "to read" list.
One good lesson in that book is the observation that outside powers almost never seek to take over territories all on thier own, they are almost always invited in by the oprressed aristocracy of a state. When the wealthy of a country or terrirtory feel they are getting a bum deal under the present ruler they conspire to bring in a dictator.

Quite a contrast, going from James Baldwin to this. :p
It's a bit on the teeny-bopper side, but hell, I like it. It's part romantic comedy, part videogame, and it's as entertaining to read as it is to look at. The premise? Scott must defeat his girlfriend's seven evil ex-boyfriends.

The Foundation series occurs later chronologically... but he didn't write his books in anything remotely resembling order! I'd say, read the Robot/Empire stories, then go to Foundation and read from there, and THEN go on to Prelude to Foundation etc. There's stuff in the later Foundation novels that refers back to the Robot/Empire series, e.g. the Spacers, that I just didn't get until I read those later... or, you could just read 'em in the order Asimov wrote 'em ;)

I'm reading them in the order they're printed on the inside of the cover of any of his paperbacks, which would've made Prelude to Foundation the first one I would read after finishing The Robots of Dawn. Glad I didn't make that mistake! So you suggest reading Prelude last (which would be after Forward The Foundation)?
Dave-ros
11-03-2007, 04:14 AM
No, Prelude then Forward, as they're part of the same cycle, but read them after the other five Foundation novels! And read those after the stories set earlier -- there's stuff in Foundation and Earth that makes no sense unless you know about the earlier phase of human civilisation... though it's still good ;)

wow. This has reappeared form the depths of time...
Since stuff kicked off at work, I've found myself reading less and less. Slightly worrying.
However, I got a fantastic book the other week from Pengwern's in Shrewsbury. It's the Shropshire cake & ale trail.

Good stuff, went out today fully intending to follow one of the walking routes and stop at a pub.
Managed to miss out the whole walking thing and just do cakes and ale. And very nice sunday lunch.
I've a whole stack of books to read for work, most of them very dry and all of them about SQL Server 2005. snore

Walter Moers : Der Schrecksenmeister http://www.amazon.de/Schrecksenmeister-Ein-kulinarisches-Letterkerl-Hildegunst-Mythenmetz/dp/3492049370/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1201535743&sr=8-1
well its a german author ^^ has quite a strange way of creating a fictional fable continent which is a mixture of fairytale storytelling with very strange creatures and rules ^^
some of these have been translated but i couldnt possibly vouch for the quality of the english versions (if its any indication with american/english books i strongly prefer the untranslated ones over german translations which usually arent as good).
but the best ones (my taste) has been translated :
http://www.amazon.com/Rumo-Miraculous-Adventures-Walter-Moers/dp/1585679364/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201535706&sr=8-3
one of the twists is that apart from the first book all books state that Moers didnt write them, but is only the translater of a briliant author living in zamonia ^^

I started reading Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, I'm on book three right now "Memories of Ice".
The series is pretty good, though it starts off kinda slowly. It really picks up halfway in the first book and the second book is pretty awesome. Third book looks to be good too, though I've just started it.

I like to alternate between Asimov (SF) and McNab (Military Thriller-ish).
I just finished Asimov's 'Nemesis' and am now starting McNab's 'Deep Black' (7th book in the Nick Stone series). I plan on beginning Asimov's 'Empire' series next.

Always been a big Punisher fan, so The Executioner novels are of interest to me as the obvious predecessor to the character. Haven't been able to find any of the old mafia wars books, so I'm reading this one where he's fighting international terrorists and arms smugglers. Cheesy but fun I'd say. A real blast of Reagan-era cold war paranoia.
Just finished:

Slaughterhouse Five didn't make much of an impression on me, but I loved the film Mother Night with Nick Nolte so much, I decided to give Vonnegut another chance. This was pretty good, but the movie was outstanding. I don't usually find myself saying things like that, and it feels weird to be going against the consensus on Vonnegut, but there it is. Or so it goes if you prefer. ;)

Not as good as I remembered, but perhaps it doesn't help to have watched some Douglas Adams' scripted Doctor Who episodes between now and the first time I read it. Really quite depressing to learn how he recycled most of the plot and characters from his old Doctor Who episodes.

Just reading the same actually, but in english. It does get a bit confusing sometimes, but the technical talk makes the characters all the more believable.

It's good, starts bit slowly, but gains momentum further you read. Too bad it is very short in my opinion :) If you were a fan of the game, this is a good read. It shows another side, of course, what the game didn't include. Also, it's so cheap that I can't see any reason not to buy it if you are a fan :) Drew Karpyshyn is a very good writer.
