What do you love and hate when playing Duke? [Archive]

I hate it when an enemy is walking FAST towards me, while i'm equipped with a RPG... And accidently shoot it, which either kills me, or seriously injure me...

I also hate it, when shooting a shrink ray at an Octabrain, and can't 'boot' it because it's flying away...

I also really don't like it if i use the Freezer to freeze an enemy, but can't hit the other enemy behind the already frozen enemy...

But i love the game itself... Especially to shoot the assault trooper on the toilet, and taking a piss right after killing him, and kick the toilet right after to drink some water... and then cragging how good i look at the mirror... I "hate" the fact that holoduke doesn't really do any good, since AI doesn't shoot at it (this was fixed atleast in the Saturn version, but never in PC?).
It's cool in multiplayer, but it was kinda dumn to notice they never made it work in singleplayer http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I never used HoloDuke much. Yeah, it never did anything, except in the Saturn version. The Saturn one used a new engine, so they probably had to reprogram some shit.

i like the game overall, i don't think i hate any of it.
but i have gotten the holoduke to work on the pc version, all the enemys really do is walk through it repeatedly, the only place that i have gotten it to work was the 2nd level of the 2nd episode.

if you use it in the saturn version, they shoot at it constantly. I think I might have seen it do this on pc too, but if so, it was only once. I don't remember if it was pc or saturn, all I remember is that I ran into the bathroom in E1L1, turned on the holoduke, and ran out, and they were fooled. Either way it seems pointless to me, except multiplayer.

I love Duke's attitude, his sense of humor, and his big explosive weapons, and basically going after pig cops and assault troopers all day. I really hate it when those Octabrains start getting close to you and chomping away at ya, that really gives me a heart attack to see that, no joke. Anything that flies in my face and rips me to shreds like an Octabrain or an Assault Commander just freaks me out, other than that, it's all awesome! Just gotta make sure my RPG is on hand when seeing any airborne critters.

The button and dial switch puzzles. Simple, but stupid. Mostly pointless.

Like duketalk, strippers, and freezing an airborne enemy in mid-air, and watching them fall to the ground and shatter. Stomping shrunk opponents, and the lazer-trip mine in the door trick.

Dislike the 100:1 ratio of bad user levels to the ones worth playing, trying to aim accurately while on a sloped surface, and the pain of trying to lay pipebombs in exactly the right spot.

Expaner not in eps 2 and 3, and rarely ammo for it in ep4. Theres some other little things I cant think atm.

Love: The fact that you canmake Battlelords your buddies (sort of, shrink them, let them grow back, they do nothing but walk till you piss them off w/ a rocket or something).

No, the Postal Series was released way after the Atomic Edition/Plutonium Pak, besides, they did a story that the postal office used was modeled after the postal office that 3DR uses. So, no, it would not have anything to do with the Postal series.

Hmm, I sorta wonder if Vince Desi thought about the Postal Series off of the Atomic Edition, I believe I may be on to something, so I better keep quiet.

Love: Everything that I don't list as something I hate
Hate: Protozoid Slimes (Me+Small or Tiny enemies don't mix) Main reason I hate those is because when I first played Duke 3d I was six or seven years old (not old enough to truly appricate the stippers) and I was running through the level Incubator or whatever its called, I was at the part where you first run into protozoid slimes and I was shooting down the left pathway, didn't even realize their was a pathway to the right, and after everything down the left pathway was dead, I didn't hear it, suddenly I had this green slimy thing on my screen with teeth gnashing and making sounds that were really creepy to me, and well, um, ah, oh screw it, I screamed bloody murder, ran off (I died in game), hid for five minutes, went back played again, and played non stop until I finished the episode. And now, in ANY video game, I hate small enemies

I hate the tassles or whatever they're called!

I love mostly everything about that game tbh. But sometimes doors squash me and that's very annoying.
I also don't like that underwater level very much.

I love so many characteristics and features of Duke Nukem 3D that it's difficult for me to pin down anything specific.

I hate the Queen that serves as one of the bosses in the Atomic Edition of the game.
To this day the Queen is the only boss creature I have been unable to defeat without cheating; otherwise I run out of ammunition (most of which I've used up getting through the rest of the level) or air (the whole scene is under water) while also being distracted by hordes of protector drones if I'm not careful. Even the NME from "Rise of the Triad" was a piece of cake in comparison.

Thats what I forgot! I hate the Queen as well! Anyways, go down their with a fully loaded devestator, use steroids, and swim circles around the Protector Drones and shoot them with the Devestator, until their dead, then just open up on the queen with any extra ammo in the devestator then use the RPG, also, if you start to run out of air, there are air pockets in some places on the ceiling

What do I hate? I hate half of the levels in The Birth. I only like Duke Burger, Area 51, Pig Sty, Derelict, and Critical Mass. The others, It's Impossible, Shop N Bag, Babeland, Going Postal, XXX Stacy and The Queen all suck. A lot. Compared to the brilliance of the rest of the Duke levels, those levels are brutal.

I used to dislike the second ep, but it really grew on me. For the most part, I love everything Duke now. I play through it regularly, both on the PC and the PSX.

Duke seems to get better over the years.

I love everything else. It took a while to get used to the shooting style of Duke. You can't play Doom and Duke the same way and expect the same results. I could go on and on about how perfect Duke is, and how balanced the levels, enemies, and weapons are.

One thing that irks me (though it's not the fault of the game) is playing the PC version and not getting the extra areas from Duke 64. When I play Freeway I want to go into the police station. I want the extra set in Movie Set, I want the Supermarket in Hollywood Holocaust. I want the Stadium to be more than just the field. Just that one part is kinda cool, but the rest of the level is pretty darn bad. Let's put it this way, it doesn't even begin to compare to the Blood level, Dark Carnival. Or any of the levels from the first 3 Duke eps.

That was a pretty good blood level. Too bad you can't kill that dude.

But back to the topic at hand. Liked Lunar Apocolypse from opening (Nobody steals our chicks... and lives) to the finish. Followed by Hollywood Holocaust and Raw Meat. The birth had it's moments IMO, but it was missing something which I can't put my finger on.

I've always wondered how to get into that super market in Hallywood holocaust -can you help me out?

As far as what I liked about Duke, pretty much everything is great for me. I wasn't a huge fan of Lunar Apocalypse but it grew on me and now I'm actually playing through it. Um, I loved the devestators, freezer and expander most of course! And watching duke kick that eye through the stadium poles is great.

There's a hidden teleporter you have to open right before the exit switch. Right where the Pig Cop teleported in when you stepped out onto the bridge.
