View Full Version : Great Metal Bands!

Hey all you metal heads (specifically Black/Death Metallers)! If you like bands like Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom etc, and also like grittier, more hardcore Black Metal then I've found some cool bands for you to check out. They are both Christian bands so the style is "holy Unblack" technically - and because of the style some of you guys may turn down a listen, but I encourage you to give it a shot, what do you have to lose? You've got great metal to gain http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
If you want to hear something with a melody, and a groove (Viking/power/black metal), try the first band. If Black/Viking Metal style, then the second band is what you should listen to first. If it's Black/Death Metal that suits you, then I reccemend scrolling down to the last band.
<font color="green"> Holy Blood </font>:
Pretty cool band that encorperates a melody and groove into their metal style. Definately worth a listen.
The Wanderer (http://www.holyblood.metal-forever.com/HolyBlood/holyblood.files/menu2.files/music.files/Strannik.mp3)
<font color="brown"> Slechtvalk </font>:
A great Metal band that can be described as Black/Viking Metal. They've got great songs, riffs, vocals and drums and you'll definately like 'em if you like Amon Amarth and/or Children of Bodom!
Here are some links to samples:
The War that Plagues the Land-
War of Ancients (http://www.fear-dark.com/slechtvalk/sampleslechtvalkwar.mp3)
At the Dawn of War -
Mortal Serenity (http://www.fear-dark.com/slechtvalk/sampleslechtvalkmortal.mp3)
Falconry-
Satanic Forest (http://members.chello.nl/m.geertsema/forestsample.mp3)
My Eternal Beloved (http://members.chello.nl/m.geertsema/eternalbelovedsample.mp3)
<font color="red"> Crimson Moonlight </font> :
Last, but definately not least - we have Crimson Moonlight. This band's latest album definately gets the lead out, and is one of my favorite things to listen to at the moment.
These guys play Black Metal (or 'holy unblack' metal if you want to get technical)/Death Metal style music with 3 guitarists and no keys. Very good stuff - and produced very well, so the guitars sound monstrous and the drums are precise and fast.
These guys just released an album titled: 'Veil of Remembrance' and I must say, it is a great album! It's well worth a listen, especially if you don't like the Black Metal coming out with keys(since it has none). Even if you do like the keys, I say give it a try, what can you lose?
Give them a listen here (http://www.crimsonmoonlight.com/cm/discography.shtml)! The files are .ogg so you'll need winamp or equivalent (so the site says).
I reccamend 'Intimations of Everlasting Constancy' (http://www.crimsonmoonlight.com/cm/sounds/cm_intimations_of_everlasting_constancy.ogg) and 'Illusion was Ture Beauty' (http://www.crimsonmoonlight.com/cm/sounds/cm_illusions_was_true_beauty.ogg).
What do you guys think?

Wow, we have another Stone fan here. I have all their albums. Though they are pretty easy to find here in Finland http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Stone is probably one of the best thrash metal bands and the best finnish band ever.
By the way; if you like Stone, I'm sure you'll like Dementia. Another old finnish thrash metal band with similiar sound to Stone. Not as progressive though. I only know their self titled album, not sure if they ever recorded anything else. Anyway, it's a kick ass album.

Funny cause, LP doesnt even claim to be metal, rock, or whatever the hell. Hybrid Theory was named that it just wasnt rock, there was electronic, rap etc etc types of music. Just drop the LP, Fred Durst bashing, its like beating a three year old then comparing him to Bush. Its old, its lame, its just plain childish considering music is an opinion, and the one who bashes opinions is an even bigger idiot then the one who is listening to whatever.

No one listed Death? c'mon! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
"Trapped in a corner!"
Also, another okay band is Antestor. their last album wasn't half bad...especially "Rites of Death" (ooo yeah)!
Anyone like some of the bands I listed at all?
Synti
09-03-2005, 03:07 AM
Heh, Death may be so obvious that no one wanted to mention it. Everyone should know it by now! Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic, Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy are my favorite albums.
The bands you listed are a bit too melodic for me. A few years back I got Slechtvalks The War That Plagues The Lands and yeah, it's kinda good. Just too melodic for me. Same goes for Arch Enemy and Dark Tranquillity.
I'm more into Obituary, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Dismember, Autopsy and stuff like that.
But some melo bands are good too. Like Satanic Warmaster. I can really recommend their new album Carelian Satanist Madness. Good old schoolish grunchy black metal but with some actually wicked melodies. Also The Black Dahlia Murder and All Shall Perish are good from the melo death metal side of things.
But anyone interested in some death 'n roll? Like later Entombed and The Crown?
Cerberus_e

I saw at Eurosonic earlier this year - quite an interesting bunch of people, with sound to match.
My recommendation:
<font color="red">B L A Z E</font>
Saw them again last night - superb show, including mr. Bayley climbing one of the poles that supported the tent-like roof over the stage, and singing from up high, and an awesome version of Sign of the Cross (Bruce Dickinson should be banned from singing any Blaze era songs - there's only one singer that can do them justice).

- Dark Tranquillity (http://www.darktranquillity.com) (Projector)
- Nightrage (http://www.nightrage.com) (Descent Into Chaos)

- Vader (http://www.vader.pl) (Revelations)
- Accept (http://www.acceptarchive.com/) (Balls To The Wall)
- Grave Digger (http://www.grave-digger.de) (Excalibur)
Well, there are many more that I like but these are a few of them. As you can see, I'm into to the melodic side of metal http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Dream Theater (Axe players should know about them) (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A//www.dreamtheater.net/&ei=KLkbQ6n_DcuMsQG6-6SXCw)

Right you are http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
What I admire about Dark Tranquillity is that in 2005 when everyone expected them to "sell out" and get more In Flames'ish in style, they release an album that kicks absolute major ass. One that will get new fans and keep old fans happy. And it's probably the first band I've been a fan of that has released a better album after I became a fan than before. Lost to Apathy is just godlike, the guitars, drums, vocals, synth, everything. There's one pause which is a bit filler'ish, but aside of that it's just pure ownage http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Also, another MAJOR plus. In Flames used to be my favourite band, but they are kind of rubbish live, Friden don't bother to sing properly and such, Dark Tranquillity on the other hand could fool you into thinking it's a playback. And it's no wonder that Henriksson and Sundin is already in Metal mags top 50 metal guitarists http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, as I previously stated, In Flames is my number one band, so maybe I regard them as a better band than I would if I hadn't been a fan for such a long time. I do think that they are great live though - at least from what I've seen on DVD's and from being at a show myself. I will however admit that their best work is without a doubt found between Lunar Strain and Clayman, but I'm very excited to hear the upcoming album - "Come Clarity" - nonetheless http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(Bruce Dickinson should be banned from singing any Blaze era songs - there's only one singer that can do them justice).
But...but Bruce actually sings "Sign of the Cross" on-key...

Dream Theater (Axe players should know about them)
I bought "Awake" and really haven't got into it the way I expected to. They weren't bad.... Going to give them another shot, so what do you recommend as their best stuff?
'Images and Words' is a great album, and so is 'Train of Thought.' Sometimes watching a band live will give you more appreciation for them as well, so you may want to pick up 'Live at Budokan.'

IMO, In Flames best albums are Lunar Strain and Jester Race. After that I like Whoracle (Jotun, Jester Script Transfigured, Morphing into primal - all great stuff on this album http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and the other stuff, but it definately can't touch me like the first two albums...
I'm personally not a fan of their last two albums, and I actually sold Reroute to Remain, and never picked up the other cd after listening to some samples - although admittedly it sounded better than Reroute To Remain from what I heard.

Ep 666, Only for the weak AND Ordinary story are my favourites. Ordinary Story is the only song I support Anders' use of the bloody moaning voice in. It's cool in that song, cause it just takes off after that, but I hate it in general. Sounds so hacky http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Their old stuff is great, but then again they had the Dark Tranquillity stuff for the first songs, so no wonder http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I have also been an IF fan for long, but have converted to DT, since they stick with the style and just become better and better.

I like episode 666 from the Artifacts Of In Flames bootleg the best, it's the demo version.
much better than the one on whoracle IMO.
I also like only for the weak & episode 666 live songs, from "Live At The World, New York 4/10/02" and "Tokyo Showdown: Live" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
other good songs are as the future repeats today, bullet ride, trigger, drifter, ... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

Yeah, that version is the one on one of the Nuclear Blast death metal collections. A bit rawer.

Holocaust is good. Their better CDs are kind of rare, but they're one of the harder NWOBHM bands that I can remember.

Didn't Blaze get fired because of "allergies"? "*sneeze* Cancel the show, guys!" Kind of funny that he wouldn't go out on stage with allergies but had no problem recording in the studio with them. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif The Clansman when sung by Blaze is depressing.

a little bit, but I don't listen much to black metal anymore.
it isn't pure black metal, so I like it a bit http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How about Control Denied, and of course Opeth , which is so obvious that I don't think anyone even listed it!
Dark Endless, Stratovarious, Horde.
