View Full Version : The day I reserved my copy of DNF, By Geo-King.

It was like a year ago. It was a magical day. School had just finished for the time being and I was in a good mood. Why you might ask? Because I was about to go on a journey, an expedition if you will. I was going to reserve my copy of DNF at a local video game store near my school. I proclaimed to a friend of mine what I was about to do and he said “Are you on crack? That game was canceled.” However I ignored his insults and moved forwards while saying “If you really feel that way, why are you following me”. I walked along an incredibly busy street with the haze of car exhaust tickling my nose. Early in the day I had pulled an all nighter to finish a project my prof gave me an extension on so I was extremely tired but nothing could stop me that day. I was like s machine, a man on a mission. I would not let anything get in my way. My mouth salivating once I entered the mall I B lined straight to the video game store. Passing the precious Pizza Nova next to the food court witch I consider to be my life blood, I walked more rapidly. My foot glided over the threshold of the video game store, people moving out of my way-they knew. To stand if front of me at that moment in time would be a date with death like no other. Calmly I said to the clerk “hey, Im here to reserve a game”. For a short while that store was like a little hang out to me and the clerk knew me well. We would spend minutes sometimes hours discussing relevant gaming issues while browsing the used game bin. He answered “hows it going” I was in no mood to talk. The urge to finish the transaction grew stronger “I would like to put a $5 deposit for…

--- DUKE NUKEM FOREVER ---

He looked at me with an evil smile almost scoffing “that game is never going to come out you know” I clenched my fists below the counter where he could not see and grinded my teeth just a little bit “listen, make an entry in your database with my name and number for this game” looking at him with a dead look he said “tell ya what, ill do it for free heh” then I said “good then ill be on my way cya”. While leaving the store I felt reassured my copy of DNF will be waiting for me WID. My friend taunted me as I left the store “hahha your retarded” then I declared “yes retarded… RETARDED LIKE A FOX!

IM NOT IN DENIAL! It's not like an everyday thing. Only 7 days a week.

If you guys liked this story I should tell you about the time I got Unreal Tournament, walked/ran over 7 km there and back at night and I had to go across a bad part of town. Or even better the first type I acquired DooM 1. The hilarious part is it involves porn. YAY FOR ME!!!

I did not have to pay $5. Thats a victory on to itself.

I am not getting it for free. However when the game sells out everywhere, there will be one place on earth where a copy will be waiting for me. Oh the irony.

Joe Siegler

3DR will take pre-orders eventually. Now is not the time for that.

What I meant was that since the game's been in development so long, they may have dropped the pre-orders from their books.

I had to get an account just to reply to this one.

I pre-ordered (or reserved) my copy of DNF in January, 1988. I believe it was through Case's Store (could be wrong) and I paid a deposit of $40 and then promptly forgot about it. About 18 months later my credit card was credited back the $40 and I received a e-mail notification of the cancelation of my order.

I believe that I went to GameStop (was Babbage's at the time) back in 1999, just before I graduated from high school. The reservation I put down was a mere $10, which was enough to reserve and be guaranteed a down payment. However, little did I know that $10 would only be used if it was released within the next few months after I laid my reservation. I dunno if GameStop ever refunded that after all this time. To me, that's a memory of $10 that really wasn't well spent, I can guarantee you that. I may not even be in their database anymore, it's been too long, they may not know me well enough to refund it.

1988? That's impossible, the real news about the DNF project didn't come about 10 years after that! How did you reserve your copy when they didn't even unleash the fact that 3DR was doing this? They didn't even start until shortly after D3D or SW were released!

I remember when I first saw companies taking preorders in PCGamer. I almost preordered through Electronics Boutique. Glad I didn't, not because I don't want the game... just because my order would have probably magically dissappeared and I would have had to pay the $50 dollars all over again.

Typo. January 1998.

I was playing Duke heavy at Kali and the Zone and was on both ladders at Cases. I'm pretty sure it was Cases that started a "Store" and was offering a reserved copy of DNF. I ordered one and paid $40. It was about a year and a half later (I had given up ever getting the game or my money) when I got a e-mail notifying me they had canceled my order and refunded my money.

I check in here once a year or so just to see what's the latest news on the vapor ware product.

So it was almost 8 years ago I ordered.

HELLOO!! FPS’s are virtual worlds AKA Virtual Reality. The only thing missing is the head set.

I disagree

to wiki define FPS: A first-person shooter ... a computer or video game where the player's on-screen view of the game world simulates that of the character

Virtual Reality is not quite like that, VR immerses you into the game, in it you are not controlling a character in the game like a FPS because you are the main character in VR, the controls are your own movements such as your own hand movements, head turn, body rotation, etc. VR is suppose to provide you a 360 degree field of view of a game or simulation.

Combining a head set (HMD) with a FPS game, might give you that nostalgia of VR, but all it is, is just small LCDs made so only your eyes can see. You're better off just putting your eyes up close to your monitor for that affect. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are you not controlling your 3D avatar in VR?

You have a point there but I think your nit picking just a little bit. I am sure some time in the future most people will say that true VR uses a direct connection to the brain. If you were to show tech heads DooM 3 in 1984 and attach a head set with motion sensor gloves they sure as shit would call it VR then promptly die of a heart attack.

I don't think I'll pre-order. If 3DR sells the game through their store or takes pre-orders http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/whenitsdone.gif then I'll buy it through them. I refuse to support the practice of companies like EB (who I work for by the way) making up release dates and then acting like it's the developers' fault that your 1999 preorder of DNF hasn't arrived yet.

Plus, I'm sure that there will be enough copies to go around.

I think I order that game at Azur like 6 years ago, when I wasn't too aware about the whole "it's gonna take forever lol" thing... For like a year, I checked my mailbox every day, waiting for that one package http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Through all of my preorder experiences I have learned that preording isn't worth the time it takes to preorder it. all of my preorders arrived like 2-5 days after it hit store shelves. So it's just easier to order it the day it's released. Same result.

In my work cube I have 2 issues of PCGamer displayed, both with Duke on the cover. One is Nov 97 and the other one is Dec 99 (I think).

Next to them I have an index card that says "8 years - Still Waiting." You'd be surprised how many people comment on my decoration http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If there is a special edition it should include a documentary on all the hype surrounded by this product and all the unseen work that went into it. I really liked the documentary of Ed Boon and other people on the mortal Kombat deadly alliance cd.

You know, I still have a 'Duke Nukem Forever' DVD 3DRealms distributed back in E3 2000 (or was it 99?) It's better than a preorder 'cause you can, at least, lay your hands on it and play the in-game movies on the TV.

Some times, a non-informed being, while browsing my games collections, finds it and screams "What the heck?!? You got DNF?!? It exists!?!"

Of course, I play along with it for 5 minutes before telling the truth about the game box and its contents...

As I said, better than a preorder in some practical sense... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You're probably referring to the DVD that was handed out at E3 2001. All that was on it was the DNF E3 2001 trailer, and the Max Payne E3 2001 trailer. That's it.

I've seen it crop up on ebay and on sites for people making up stories like they have some pre-release DNF copy.

It's somewhat rare, but not THAT rare. There were thousands printed. I doubt you'd get rich off of it. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am critically debating if I should camp outside a store if my reservation somehow vanishes WID. I know it seems a little juvenile now that I am older to be doing shit like this but… God damn! It’s a relic from my teen/childhood that needs closure. If I never get my hands on this game a little part of me will die. The part that still thinks magic exists, the part of me that still thinks if I try hard enough I can fly, the part of me that thinks Celine Dion and Nickelback are ninja spy monsters sent from the hell dimension to secretly destroy all of mankind with their poisonous genocide some people call “music”.

Seriously, I think that last one is true. If a full grown man were to uppercut Dion right in the face with all his might, I am pretty sure her head would dislodge from her robot body and you all would shit your pants HARD when you see she is actually a small Octobrain.

(back on topic)

I should get some video of me 0wn1ng everyone in line when it hits stores. I might even start early… Anyone here have webspace for vids or audio of me doing ***** up shit in the name of 3DR? If DNF cult members won’t help me out I will consider it blasphemy.

Lets get creative. LOLZ! Who here wants to have DNF meetings the first Sunday of every month at 8:00PM somewhere (Toronto)? Are you thinking what I am thinking??? DUKE-CON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if you are willing to spend that much energy on the issue, why not camping outside 3DRealms' HQ and stay there until they release something for us to see? (or play!)

We could hire some strippers to perform a show as well. While the staff are entertained, there's always a chance of being able to slip inside the building and grab a tech demo.

That if we don't get caugh by the stripper's lure ourselves... Anyway... We're talking about Duke, eh? Almost forgot!

Wel, I think it's save to say that 3DR is not going to hire someone and then not let them work because DNF isn't done yet (who would do that anyway), so if they hire someone that person will be put on to work on DNF and after that of course also on the new project. ;)

This of course taking into account that 3DR will not have two projects running internally as GB once said. :)

So ? That is gonna make the game come out sooner not later.

You don't hire brand new programmers and level designers to finish up a project. You hire programmers and level designers when you need to make a game. It's counter-productive, from what I understand at least, to hire programmers and level designers to finish off a game because they don't have the history nor the experience working with the game.

The kind of hiring GB is doing only makes sense if the work on DNF (as in making the actual game, not the tech/tools behind the scenes) is in the beginning or early middle stages.

Kristian Joensen
05-04-2006, 06:29 PM
But that is simply wrong, George has already said that it is NOT counter-productive. They have been making content for it since January 2003. That is almost 3.5 years already.

Tell us more, Wieder! You're giving us blueballs here... :(

Almost every major publisher project continues to ramp up the number of people working on a title all the way up to the testing phase.

It doesn't take that long to come onto a project and be productive unless you are talking about core tech programming. The current state of a game has little effect for everyone else.

He said that around year ago(or more). If they have only one step to finish the project then it will be counter-productive. Well, depends on the job he's going to do. Hiring people generaly is the good thing, the bad thing is why they hiring people for the project that must be in some advanced stage and why those weren't hired earlier.

I'm not saying that it's bad. I don't know. I'm just worrying about DNF if the people still(and quite often) being hired for this project(if there is no some pre-development research for another project). You know, bad thoughts coming to mind... :(
