In episode 4 it is said "Vader helped hunt down and kill the Jedi". Gunray was no Jedi and even if he was he was a bad guy the event as it heppened only retarded the character development.
I expected Anikin to be thrown out of the Jedi order for an emotional and dangerous out burst. Then to willingly and knowningly devote himself to the Sith. Then later return to destroy the jedi council, hunting the Jedi masters one by one. That is what I expected.

I like George's version, that Anakin embraced evil out of a selfish desire that he had deceived himself into believing was good. Getting kicked out of the Jedi order then throwing a temper tantrum and attacking Jedi masters would have not only been dramatically unsatisfying but unrealistic. Would it have really been credible that Anakin could have bested the members of the Jedi council in one-on-one combat?
