View Full Version : Censorship: Selective?

I read a tidbit on another forum that got me thinking. As you all know the adventure game Farenheit (dubbed Indigio Prophecy for the U.S. and Canada) is coming to stores soon. For us canadians and americans we are treated to an 'M" rated game with content removed.
I won't bore you with what or why, but just listen to this: They edited the game due to sales. Places like ebgames and walmart will not sell "AO" rated games. Sounds fair right?
Does it? I bought Resident Evil: Apocalypse from Ebgames not long ago and it is rated "R" and contains some nudity and brutal violence. Excuse me if I am wrong, but isn't that what Farenheit will contain? Some violence and nudity. In fact the creator even stated that the nudity wasn't as bad as people make it out to be.
So as I see it, these stores have no clue what they are doing. For content that would rate a movie as "R" its okay to sell to kids....but put it into a game and thats a "no-no" even if the game specifically states its for adults. Thats truly interesting.
Checkmate retailers. Perhaps if you would stop being hypocrites and stop selling those movies with sex scenes then maybe your game boycotting will make sense. I mean, I can buy the matrix with a sex scene right off the shelf but for games its taboo. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
Talk about a double standard.

Maybe it's because you actually take part in a game but just watch a movie? Probably it's just fallout from the whole Hot Coffee thing - blame Jack Thompson http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Well since you have both hands on the controller I'm sure the movie is "technically" worse. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Censorship sux! M should be the equivilant to an R rated movie. Both are 17 and up. Damn Jack Thompson and all like him, like Lieberman, to hell.

Technically it IS equivalent...therefore I expect the same content to be in both. If they have an issue with that, change the ratings on either movies or games accordingly. I mean...they are both media and should share the same ratings.

Word.
In R-rated movies, if you see 2 people having sex in a bed, with or without bed sheets, it's not a big deal.
Same goes for grabbing some lady's breasticles or something of that nature.

I thought R-rated movies in the US just meant under-17s need to be accompanied by an adult (i.e. kids can still see them)? Is it different for videos/DVDs? Or did I misunderstand, and M-rated games can be played by under-17s as long as there's an adult present? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Really? I've never seen kids questioned about buying 'R' rated movies...perhaps Mr. Thompson ought to start on that stream of media as well? I'm just saying that if the ebgames near me likes to seel 'R' movies to however wants them then why not games? Perhaps they should allow both and ask for ID like a normal store would. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
I mean, censorship ought to go all ways or get the hell out. Personally I'll take the latter because parents should be responsible if their kids aren't old enough.

That is exactly my point. Think about it. In the UK, games like SA were 18+ from the start.
On a gta website called GTAzz (not updated much anymore, sadly), Azz wrote "No sex please, we're Australian" as the title for his post which said:
Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification (is it me or are games rated by completely inappropriate bodies?), has decided that as a result of sex scenes the Hot Coffee mod reveals San Andreas is to be removed from all stores. It was previously rated for 15 or over.
So to reiterate an argument I've seen put forward by so many others (and myself), violence is apparently ok, but the idea 15 year olds Aussies might go online, download a mod and actually see some half finished sex scenes is bad bad BAD!!!
Here's a quick inside tip for the OFLC. Horny 15 year old Australians with access to the internet are not downloading Hot Coffee to releive their stress. They're visitng Kawaii School Girls Suck Big Cocks.com or Young Hung and Full of Cum .com (depending on preference).
Trust me on this..
