Ok for some reason my internet would not work at all this morning. To me it automatically looked like a DNS error of some sort because the PCs connected to the router just perfectly, but no outside connection.

I checked the router settings and my connection was inactive. So I reconnected and it showed the new IP and everything looked okay. I tried some internet sites but no it was no go. Nothing seemed to help, restarted the pcs, repairing the connections (release / renew), flushdns, nothing. Then I tried my brother's PC (also conencted to the router) and it worked! I checked the TCP/IP settings and it had manual DNS servers listed that differed from the ones my router picked up automatically.

Testing those servers in my other PCs they all work right now. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

However what is going on? My router isn't picking up the correct DNS servers wich leads me to believe that sympatico (my ISP) is sending the wrong numbers when I use DCHP.

Calling them didn't get em anywhere so I tried their crappy netassistant utility to get a live person to talk to. I explained my issue...but guess what? Since I mentioned the word "router" she immediately said that "We don't support that". I said I understood but can you tell me if these numbers are correct? She replied "No, I wouldn't know because we don't support that".

Err....defensive much? A simple "I don't know what the hell I'm talking about" would have been better for me. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Any ideas on whether its my end or theirs? My router looks fine and everything is working with these manually inputed numbers...but I wonder why it won't work with the ones I get automatically? Hell, this might even explain the recent DNS troubles I've been having where certain websites don't work right away.

Just got through network troubleshooting in my A+ course, so I could be of help. Start off small. So work your way from the NIC card to the internet. First, ping the router. If that works, ping your gateway. If that works, try pinging your ISP. Then finally ping google.com, for example. If anyone along the way doesn't work, then you've found your problem. For example, if you can ping your router, but not your gateway, then it's something on your end. The command NSLOOKUP will give you the names of the DNS servers.

Another thing you might want to do is go into the command prompt and type "ipconfig /all >ip.txt" which will make a text file of the information, and you can send that here for the other guys to look at. The file would be saved to the root of C:.

Try pinging the DNS servers Sympatico supplies. If there's a time out, run tracert. Perhaps part of the network is down, and you can't reach the DNS servers.

I've done all the basics, so its a little late for that. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif No, the numbers that are suppilied by DCHP don't exists....pinging them gives no response. The older servers work just fine.

I think this is some sort of goof-up on their end. For now I'll keep the older servers since they seem to work...in fact the internet is actually speedier now. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I think there must have been a problem with those other servers and bell took them out for troubleshooting. I just wish they said something instead of denying it and claiming it must be my fault.

I didn't have time to read all the above, but every now and then ISP DNS servers you are pointed to may get changed, so just put one computer directly to the cable/dsl modem, so it can get the new shit and then see if it changed.

/\ Well I when I disconnect my router from the internet via the setup it gets all new numbers. The problem was that the new ones didn't work. I had to use old ones (which I'm lucky I had the adresses to)
