I just remembered that ID also used to have a kind of game delivery system.
This was back in the day of Doom 2 and Hexen, before most people had access to the internet.
What they did was that they put like 5-6 full games on the game CD, and when you clicked one of them you got a code. You had to phone some people with that code and they would give you a corresponding code you typed in to unlock the game
Of course, this would not work now as games are too big and most people have access to the internet and would be able to find cracks and stuff very easily, but for that time it was a nice way to do that
I still remember it annoyed me greatly that I already had the full versions of many games on my CD and could not access them!

well, at least you can still play them now their delivery system doesn't work anymore, you just give in your code.

I remember when I bought Doom (preorder, sight unseen!). I got it in the mail on 3 1/2 inch disks. A few weeks later, they sent me a patch disk, without me doing anything. I thought that was cool.

Quake I was the guinea pig for this delivery system. It was scrapped shortly after that due to the rampant abuse of the system, if I remember right.

Yeah I think someone cracked the codes and had little programs to where people could go out to the store and buy the demo CD for a few dollars and then get every game out of it.

Yeah that system got cracked almost immediately. You'd think someone like Carmack would have known that was going to happen.
