View Full Version : ''Save the world all by yourself'' line poll

That last ''Joe's voice'' thread had me thinking about one of the best lines I heard in a game: ''What're you gonna do, pal? Save the world, all by yourself?''.

Then I remembered that almost all the content the last AAA games showed before release, was scrapped. Think about the Pinky bathroom scene in Doom III; or the wood pillar pendulum scene in Half Life II...

So I guess that that line is scrapped with all the rest of the DNF2001 trailer, as George said some time ago.

Yes I really really love that line. I also think that 3D Realms have kept the line provided the larger context it is part of has been kept. But they migth have removed that context, say maybe Duke doesn't encounter that EDF soldier at all anymore ?

It don't have to be the exact same EDF soldier. It even don't have to be an EDF soldier. I would be fun too (for example) to put this line in the US President mouth... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, very much so, but the situation has to be rigth and maybe the situation wich led the EDF soldier to say that line has been removed for some other reason ?

I certainly don't hope so, but you never know.

I´m sure that they will use it in the final game, it´s too cool to cut it http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

there doesn't have to be a situation leading the NPC to say that, just duke walking close to him is enough.

Kristian Joensen

Yes but it could have been cut by virtue of the restart.

I think you are misunderstanding me I was referring to the story, the EDF soldier must be there for Duke to walk close to him correct ?

There are certain things happening in the background wich make the soldiers response appropriate correct ?

Isn't it also correct that neither of those things are necessarily present in the current incarnation of DNF ?

The whole level with the EDF soldier migth have been removed.

Yeah sure, I think it is in. I voted "I guess that they'll keep it", I was just given the reason why I voted that way instead of voting for "I'm sure this line will be in the game".

We don't even know if there are going to be dialogue trees or verbal exchanges beyond 2 lines. So context may not be much of an issue. The scripted sequences thread called for really basic script ideas too.

Kristian Joensen
09-20-2005, 11:45 AM
Well we actually DO know that the story will play a much larger role in DNF than in Duke3D and we also DO know that there indeed will be dialog in the game.

Yes, I hope the line was one of the ideas they had. we know the story in DNF will be very detailed, and they could easily put the line in, so I really hope it makes it.

Well It's a guess of course but, since they scrapped almost everything there is no reason to repeat it. And nobody really knows if the story changed alot when they restarted but I guess there were a few changes...and I just have the feeling the line is out. Most of the things you can do in the video are probably still in in some form but the characters/lines, well, they've probably changed a bit..

It looked very cool, and the EDF soldier who limped and also dropped blood was ahead of its time and still a detail that no other game really has. I hope they have a similar scene still in.

As has been concluded a few times before, it would serve as a good ego booster (depending, of course, on what Duke's response, if any, is). I hope it's still in, and I think it'd be a dumb move to scrap it just because we've already heard it a long time ago. Let us experience it first-hand after some hours of playing and it should have even more of an impact.

"There is no reason to repeat it" ? Well anything wich is back in IS redone simply because of the huge technical advance made through the last 4 years and implemented in DNF as a result of the restart. This is also implied from the content restart. Duke himself for example was remodeled, you say that characters and lines have changed a bit.

Well, sure but that doesn't mean that most or all of them have been removed, look at the opening from the E3 2005 trailer of Prey and compare it to the one from E3 1998, that is a 7 years difference, with DNF we are only talking about a 4 years difference.

With Prey we have went from Talon Brave to Tommy Hawk, hell the original game didn't have a lovestory that is a pretty big difference, but ALL the lines from the E3 2005 trailer are from 1998(and maybe even earlier).

Hmm true, I'm no expert but I was just had thsi feeling it wasn't done. Maybe they haven't recorded the final voices yet. Maybe at the moment 3DR didn't realize it was a great line but with this thread they'll recognize it's importance http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Hm, that's alot of maybe's:) Anyway, we're just can't be certain of it but I hope you're right http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

He was just saying that with the Prey video, some (or all) of the voices where place holders, i.e. not the final in game voices, but that some of those great lines (don't let them make you their prey. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) will hopefully return in prey. And he is expecting the same with DNF and the 2001 trailer of DNF. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

(Am I right here?)

Yes basicly, put placeholders migth not be the correct term, since I understood a post by Scott as they intend to keep the lines, but re-record them.

Am a talking about Prey here.

Maybe they are gonna do the same with DNF ?

But that wasn't the question I was trying to pose in my post. I was just pointing out that they have restarted Prey and done some pretty fundamental changes like changing the lead characters name and adding in a lovestory, but they STILL managed to keep all those lines we see in the E3 trailer, even 7 years after the 1998 trailer

With DNF it has only been 4 years since the last trailer.

To Joe or George or 3DR Staff:
Do you consider the poll results? I know they can't be decisive, but have any impact in the decision taking?

Hope they keep that! It rocked. they could lose everything else in the whole trailer, but for duke's sake, keep that line!

Too many games have lost what we loved from the trailers.

Remember the Halo 2 trailer? I was SO disappointed when I finally played it. All the atmo I'd built myself up for had been left out, altho in that case I'm guessing its coz it was war related.
