View Full Version : Removing the Recycle Bin from the desktop
Ok, here's the deal. I decided to give my computer a makeover. I downloaded some new widgets for DesktopX and moved all the icons from the desktop to the quick launch section of my start bar. So far, everything is cool. Only one problem; I can't remove the recycle bin icon from the desktop! I've seen this done before, but I don't know how it was done? Is there some secret switch that's hidden in a back room accessable only through a jeffries tube? Or do I have to fool around with a third party program?
Thanks.

You sure? TweakUI does the trick. Can be download from here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui
Then change the setting for Desktop to remove the recycle bin from the desktop.
Its usually located in C:\RECYCLER, it'll be hidden from view.
^ Beat me to it. Was gonna suggest that.

yep, only way!
Nope. You can also do this through Group Policy Editor.
Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc
Go to Local Computer Policy -> User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Desktop
Change the 'Remove Recycle Bin icon from the desktop' setting to Enable
There's a bunch of other things you can do in GPEDIT that you don't get access to any other way unless you edit the registry directly. Very handy tool that most people don't know about.

^^^ Doesn't work for me (file not found). Is this only on WinXP Pro or 64-bit? I have WinXP Home edition...
It sound weird to hear you say you want to delete the "Recycle Bin" (dump). http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

For XP Home user, you can either use TweakUI or manually change the registry.
Run 'regedit'
Either
1) Delete this key and restart:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersio n\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA00 2F954E}
To access the recycle bin, go to C:\Recycler or C:\Recycled (Hidden folder)
Or
2) Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\ Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel
and make new DWORD-Value with the name "{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}" & 'Modify' Value "1"
If you have the classic style menu, then go to \HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu and do the same thing.
Always backup before doing any changes http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
