View Full Version : So, who else isn't much into video games anymore?

Last game I was really into and finished was Max Payne 2, shortly after its release.

Since then I've only tried 2 or 3 games (HL2 being one of them. I loved it, I want to finish it but I don't feel like playing...). I just have other stuff to do that I consider more important and have been associating computers as either work-related or a waste of time.

I still do have an interest in the media related to video games; I read a few articles or watch trailers from time to time but haven't had an urge to play anything since Max Payne 2.

I'm not complaining or ranting about the fact that 99% of what's being released today is total crap (because they are...), I'm just curious to see if anyone else has kinda lost interest.

But for the few rare moments that I feel like playing something it's just instant gameplay fun that I need. Like the Metal Slug series or Doom I & II. But then again, I think I play those only an hour per month... If not less.

I found recently that I've become rather tired of the FPS genre (gasp!). I thought it was gaming in general, like yourself, but I quickly realized it was just the over saturation of first person shooters that did it to me. I mean, recently I played Second Sight (a third person psychic action game) and more importantly: Indigo Prophecy.

After I finished Indigo I realized that I am simply tired of FPS. Not forever, but I mean I just need a break from playing them. This does come at a bad time since Serious Sam 2 and FEAR are right around the corner.....but I will still put some time into those two. (Mostly co-op in SS, whilst FEAR is rather unique)

I've decided to check out the many adventure games I've missed in the last few years. I just bought a game titled "Still-Life" by the Adventure Company and I will try a few others like Voyage and Mysterious Island. I've been away from adventures for soo long that I forgot how much I loved them.

Sometimes you just need variety.

With an 18 month old running around the house and another on the way(!), I have far less time to devote to gaming than I used to. As such, I find I'm less interested in games simply because I can't devote the time it often takes to really appreciate them.

On the plus side, I save money because I'm not buying nearly as many games as I used to, and when I do, it's a game that I really want to play and will derive the most enjoyment from.

For a long time now I'd say I spend more time reading about games than actually playing them. I'm downloading the Call of Duty 2 demo now, it;s the first thing to really grab my interest in a long time.

My gaming has been interrupted because I can't afford to buy the hardware. I've been playing choppy Starcraft for months. And now FEAR's coming out and it looks like I won't be seeing it any time soon.

Gaming for me has always been like this. When everything is in place, I can purchase a lot of just above average games on a budget. But I've also missed out on several titles as a result: The Unreal(sp) series, NOLF2, etc. Latest I played was HL2 & Doom3 before that. So the excitement for me is always high when I return to it again.

I was in a slump like that before I bought this PC, and I feel for you. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Thats why I forced myself to save up the money and buy a PC that will last me at least a few years of playing games at max, and eventually medium....

It sucks when your hardware limits your choices. Consoles are your friend at that point.

I agree. I have noticed in the past year or two that my interest in games and programming has really gone down. I used to program all the time, more than playing games, now I have a hard time getting into the mood for programming or playing much in the way of games. I have played a little Diablo 2 lately, that's okay, but it is getting a little old as well.

I could care less if I played many games, I was never one to play them too much. But I would like to rekindle my interest in programming. I have been programming since sometime around 1985 or there abouts, the first computer I programmed was a TRS-80. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't know what happened, maybe it's age creeping up on me, I turned 40 this year. Not old but...

I can spend far more time on these forums and enjoy it more it seems.

You're only 23. Come back in 20 years and say that. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I knew you were young before I checked your age, heh, I used to say that too. I still love gaming, just not as much as I used to. It takes a VERY good game to really get my interest, and even then, with the cost of games these days, I usually wait until they're in a "battlechest" for $25 (as I did with Medal of Honour), used or in a bargin bin, and then I may skip it depending on if my interest has faded or not. heh.

If you do the same thing long enough, you will grow tired of it.

I even considered selling my computer and finding a new interest.

I'de love to get back into diablo2 or other xbox titles but i'm never home or away from my gf long enough to play anything. And given the choice between gf or games gf always wins. So really i'm still into them but between work and a life theres no time...

There's only a few games that really get me excited anymore. Fahrenheit looks very interesting and can't wait to play it. Same goes for Call of Cthulhu and a few upcoming tittles. Other games just don't interest me at all! WoW is basically only thing I play at the moment. And it's more than a game to me at this point so I don't want to insult it and call it a "game" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

But Revolution might bring back the love. And the upcoming Zelda.

I read, inquire, think, argue, desire, and buy videogames. I play them very little. Almost like a collector.

Not that I don't want to play, but I think they've become very complicated. I loved MGS for PS1, but that was nearly a decade ago. I bought MGS: Substance for Xbox 2 years ago (3?), and have yet to get past the first boss encounter. Bought the strat guide and everything.

Owned FFX for over 2 years, and I just don't care about ultimate weapons, side-quests, leveling...I've been at the last "Castle" for months, and haven't gone and beaten it.

Played some HL2, some Doom3, some WoW, some GTA:SA. "Some." While I know you can't "beat" WoW, I feel like I get bored part-way through, or things get extremetly tough, or turn into a grind, or just LAST TOO GODDAMN LONG.

I think, since I have less time now, than I did in school, I have a hard time finishing long games. I read in PLAY magazine, among others, about the new games coming out that are "only" 15-20 hour affairs. Good. I understand the mega-rpg's are going to top 40-60 or even 80. But I don't think I'm alone in my age group (maybe I am?) when I'm looking for more impactful, 10-20 hour experiences than for drawn-out 40-60 hour games.

Some of the last games I finished were:

Max Payne 2: Finished it in two long sittings in two days, and I absolutely loved every second of it. I was hooked. I went back and downloaded user mods and had some fun, and I know that I can replay and finish it over some idle weekend as well.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time: Great game. Well paced, fun fights, amazing camera work, spot-on controls, unobtrusive story, under 20 hours. It's a game that gives me pacing I can count on (save spots regularly), a camera I can use to see these massive rooms easily, and just enough hints so that I'm not running to gamefaqs every ten minutes looking for an obscure solution (I'm looking at you Final Fantasy's Puzzles, Al Bhed Primers, Materia, Chocobos, Ultimate Weapons, etc, etc..).

I'm playing through Ico right now, which is very much inspiration for Prince of Persia's 3d gameplay. More artsy, less menu's, less humor. Beautiful game. Great puzzles. It even makes an emotion connection with the player. I think I'm about 1/3 way through at around 4-5 hours of play.

I think length and complication are a huge turnoff to "aging" gamers. Or it is to me, at least.

Also, while those are the last games I've recently finished and enjoyed thoroughly, I've bought probably 15-20 other games in that span. Lots of genres. It's hard to find winners. Even among the winners.

My little ones love games so they actually keep me interested. They enjoy any game we sit down and play.

Now that my son is in college, there is no one to deathmatch with, so I am starting to play more internet DM.

Overall though, the amount of time I play games has dropped. I have a bunch of games that I have not even opened yet.

10+ years under my belt and still as excited about new releases than ever. If you're older and get into it it's easy to drop out of it.

When you grow up with them they kind of become a part of you that isn't as easy to just drop as the time goes by. I'm 22 in less than 2 months and can't see myself not liking games or not wanting to play them. I can see myself playing them less and less because of other things on my plate but i can't see myself ever going "meh, it needs to be huge to get my attention"

I may go out later on this week and check to see if there's anything new I may like. I really enjoy The Adventure Company games (Myst like adventure games) so I'll be keeping an eye out for them more than anything else. Something that doesn't involve running around killing things.

Sheesh, you make it seem like I was an old man when I started playing video games! heheh... in 1980 I was only 15. I was playing arcade games when I was around 11 or 12, less sophisticated games, but video games non-the less, and they had MORE of an impact on me as they were really new! Our TV at the time was B&W, 13 channels, no remote (I can hear the gasps now, heh). I played Space Invaders, a game with two cowboys, it was a table top game, colour, two people played, each held a joystick shaped like a gun handle and you had to shoot the other while wagons etc... went in between you. I forget the name of it. We also played alot of pinball (10 cents for 5 balls! heh), not the exactly the same, but similar. We also had a TV PONG game at home. REALLY basic, but still a video game. I don't know how I stayed up all night playing it with my cousin, heheh, but I did. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No offense, I'm not trying to belittle you or anything, but it has only been 10 years. 10 years after I got my first computer I was only 30 years old and still going strong and absolutely loving video games. Don't get me wrong, I still like game and love my computer, but my interests are changing, my love of computer video games is declining (but not gone) and more importantly for me, computer programming is losing my interest, which really concerns me as I have always loved it. I may take a break from games and these forums for a few months and concentrate on my programming. I can do without games. heh.

Of course, like others in here, I have a wife and I make a concious effort to do as much as I can with her, which means less computer time (and that's okay, she's worth it).

I am definately seeing a trend here though and it's interesting as we are the first in our age group to have been playing video games since we were kids.

I got introduced to games when I was 2,3, or 4 years old, so im still hooked on them big time, mainly because I play by what looks intresting, not what others say. Also because when people are introduced to something at a young age it either becomes your life, or your absolute favorite hobby. Look at football people, introduced to it at a young age, dad probably loved it, and thats all they do. Hell, some of them make it their career. Well, some of them.

I grew up playing doom and duke in my teens and I still love em all. Like others have mentioned though with age (45 Friday) comes responsibility. My free time is a lot less than back then. I also love a good single player game more now cause I can start where I left off when time permits. And the FPS genre in general has become un-innovated so using that time is easily traded for other likes.

Last game I was willing to fight for time was HL2. I actually sleep very minimum each night and went to work. Witch is a lot when you work a steady 7 day schedule with no time off.

Ummm, you played Doom and Duke in your teens and you are 45 now?! Duke3D came out in 1996, that was 9 years ago. If you were in your teens then, that would make you 28 at the most (if you were 19 in 1996). If you're 45 now, than you would have been 35 when Doom and Duke3D came out (36 when Duke3D came out) not in your teens! heh.

Well if you don't count those units that connected to the tv that played pong etc. whatever they were called, I started late 70's with a Apple II , and then Apple IIe. Progressed to a Amiga 1000 and a Amiga 500 in the late 80's. Amiga was cats ass back then.

I've nearly given up on games.. theres only a handful of games that I am really looking forward to, the rest I could care less about.

Thing is I'm getting very picky. Though I would never give games up totally.. there will always be a part of my life.. but the times when I used to sit down and play through a game have long since gone.

The last game I finished was Half Life 2 (before that Max Payne 2).. so it's very rare that I'll pass a game now.

I just like light games that are good for a quick go or a round with friends.

Almost never play games anymore...

The last 2 games I played were HL2, and before that Deus Ex (not part 2, but the original - and I remember that coming out 4 or 5 years ago).

These days I'm a lot more interested in 3d modeling. 99% of the time I spent playing games in now devoted to learning 3d packages, or making character models.
