View Full Version : HDR rendering in DoD

Yesterday I waited until midnight (In my timezone was midnight) to be able to unlock and play DoD.
I created a server for myself to wander alone and be able to enjoy the eyecandy that the HDR rendering had to give me.
I have seen the effect. Not bad, is cool to see how the ''lens aperture'' changes automatically when you go from a dark alley to a sunny outside, but... I'm not impressed.
Perhaps the HDR rendering is something more to add to the overall graphics quality of a game, but isn't important enough by itself.

I'll wait for ''Lost Coast'' to see if all that HDR buzz was only ''buzz'', and have a more informed opinion, but meanwhile I'm disapointed with HDR.

How about you?

What he said.

It's really a wonderful and subtle graphical effect that makes the lighting look very realistic, but static shots don't do it justice. You really have to see it in motion to appreciate it. After playing Day of Defeat: Source, I played Half-Life 2 and actually found the static lighting levels to be a bit jarring.

I prefer it over the haze HDR found in some recent and upcoming games.

Is there any articles online where I can read a more indepth analysis of HDR?
My x700 is HDR compatible, right?

EDIT: Found the command that forces HL 2 to activate HDR: mat_hdr_enable 1.

Be warned, you might go blind.

They weren't kidding when they said HL 2 wouldn't support HDR @ 100%.

EDIT:
my card doesnt support it, so I really dont know.

After doing some research, I found out that the x700 is compatible with HDR.

So if your x700 is... my x800 should be as well. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Well, I'm okay then. Bring on Lost Coast. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

In Patch 1.3, Shader Model 3.0 will be enabled by default when it detects a video card capable of it, in this case the GeForce 6200, GeForce 6600, and GeForce 6800 series video cards. The game will use Pixel and Vertex Shader version 3.0.

For ATI Radeon X700 and X800 series video cards the game will now use Shader Model 2.0x, which means Pixel Shader 2.0b and Vertex Shader 2.0 (there is no “a” or “b” subset version of the vertex shader in DX9.0c).

For these new Shader Model versions to work you must have DirectX 9.0c installed and you must set the in-game quality control panel variables to “Very High”.

It's really not that stressful, turn of AA and it looks better than with Full AA, with only a slight performance hit. I have a midrange system but I run DoD on full textures, models, shaders, and texture filtering, set AA to 2X, and HDR to low and it runs great. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Very well optimized, it's great to not have to worry about it like I do with Battlefield 2.

Orochi Avlis

Valve managed to find a way to have both HDR and AA working at the same time.

From what I've been hearing in other games, you need to turn AA off to achieve the HDR effects.

I have a Radeon 9800 and I don't think I have AA activated.
I'll change settings to see if it's my configuration or card; but I can see the effects so I think I'm seeing it correctly.

I don't have DoD and haven't seen any screenshots of DoD with HDR enabled.. but I do have Far Cry. I can say on a 6600GT the HDR effects are amazing!

Mountain Man, as another poster pointed out not all HL2 levels are going to be HDR friendly--you can have it enabled but nothing will happen. Plus you need to restart the game for it to take effect.

I know that.
I just wanted to show what it's like with the HDR forced on.

Yeah, I think I was the poster who pointed that out (if not in this thread then in another).

But the fact is, that screen that Orochi posted doesn't look right for whatever reason.

I just downloaded DoD:S and all I can say is.. HOLY SHIT!!

I mean HDR was no big deal to me, I thought it was just another gimmick or buzzword being thrown around like everything else but this is actually really fxcking cool!

NO screenshot could ever do this justice, you must see it for yourself.

Good job Valve!!

I agree. For me, HDR went from something I didn't really care about to being a "must have" feature for every game here on out.

dark_angel - word from TerminX: 6800GT will work if I upgrade my power supply to at least 430w
Uisor - no PCI-e

if you want to reply further, take it to the stupid hardware questions thread in the hardware forum, I don't want to be responsible for taking this off topic http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
