It's not gonna happen, but not because of us. For the 5th anniv of Wolf3D (which was May 5, 1997), I asked id Software about doing a "LameWolf".
They said "No, we feel we've covered the nostalgia bit with the id Anthology. We're not interested in this."

Hey Joe did you acctually play those? (most likely) What were they like? How did the game changed in the finished game compared to the betas? Are there any screenshots?

The DOOM alhpa, betas are fun but that's about it. I took one little look and deleted it. There intresting to see and stuff but no REAL use to them.

The only beta I ever really bothered to sit down and PLAY (as opposed to load up and just peek at) was, of course, LameDuke. Not only were there completely different levels (albeit a bit cryptic), but it had that classic, cartoony Duke2 charm! If you haven't gotten this yet because you think it's nothing more than Duke3d with crappy graphics, you are SO wrong! Get it now! http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Oakrai had a question Joe. Answer It! I'm also interested in Wolf3d and other Apogee game betas.

The beta Wolf3Ds were supposedly much different from the final, according to the Hint Manual at least. The game was more complicated to control and about dragging nazi bodies into rooms so guards don't see them, stealing their uniforms, etc. Id decided to get rid of all that and make it fast-paced instead.
On another note, the Doom Betas do suck (fun wise), and I imagine most games in the same state do.
Betas I've enjoyed playing: Lameduke and Sonic 2 Beta.

Lameduke was an exception, not the rule.
We don't have plans to release old betas for any other title.

Exception disproves the rule.
Your right, but theirs still room for argument.

That would kick ass if five years after DNF is released you put the Quake 2 version of Duke on the net.

That will never ever EVER ever happen - there are legal reasons why we can't release the Q2 stuff.

according to your logic, if since you pronounce "blur" as 'bler', you should pronounce "scum" as 'scem', or "snug" as 'sneg' etc etc
They made the rule, the can make the exceptions. You can say that the exeptions disproves the rules as much as you like, it's not your rules, and unless they decide it, it won't change.

No, that's not a hard-and-fast natual law type rule, that's an arbitrary human-type rule. There's a big difference.
Also, aren't we getting a bit off-topic here? http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

What I meant is that something isn't a rule if it's not always true. So, 3DRealms deciding not to release betas is regular, but not a rule. If a rule is broken then it's not a rule, by definition.

I loved the Doom alphas/betas. I'm sort of a Doom fanatic, and I love to see what it might have been, if they had gone with their original story. I also read Tom Hall's Doom Bible, which is really great (but I think I like the final version of Doom better anyway.)
And I spent a lot of time playing the Sonic 2 Beta (I am (was) sort of a Sonic the Hedgehog fanatic also). There are whole webpages dedicated the the Sonic 2 Beta. It's really an interesting find, especially if you've ever wondered "What the hell is Sound Test #10 in Sonic 2!?"
Personally, I'd love to see a Wolf3D beta, but even if it was possible, 3D Realms would not be the place to ask. You'd have to talk to the people at Id.

Go read the old msgs, I bet this is still in here..
When Wolf3D was 5 years old, I asked id about releasing the old EGA version of Wolfenstein3D, or one of the more common VGA betas.
Their response was "We did the id Anthology - we feel we've covered the history stuff already, we're not interested".

Was there a EGA version of Wolfenstein? Could you please release a screenshot, Joe. Monday 26 February is my birthday. I will be 16 then and I would really, really appriciate (???) if you do that. 1 is enough, 2 or more is great!
Send me a e-mail for my birthday!

Joe3DR: You should consider a quiz or a contract to enter this forum. If anyone asks when any game is out, they will be sued. If anyone doesn't know about the stuff you've already answered, sued... or just banned... your choice http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif
