Ya know how everyone says all traces of Wolfenstein were cut from ROTT, but take a good look at BJ from Wolf 3D, and Tardoni Cassett from ROTT. I find a haunting resemblance. :-)

ROTT was origianlly gonna be Wolfenstien 2? That would've been cool! I never actually bought ROTT (I'm a big sharware freak), but I remember loving Wolenstien and liking (it wasn't that good) Spear of Destiny. Why was the stuff changed to be a whole different game?

DAMMIT! There was a sequel to Wolfenstein called Spear Of Destiny! Exactly like W3D, but with a few improvements. But there WAS a sequel. Many ppl think that Flashback was the sequel to Out of this world. DUH! IT was a completely differnent game! A sequel was made called "Heart of the Alien" for the SegaCD. I dont know where ROTT is called WolfII for some reason. Am I obsessing over this too much? http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

>>ethically and legally<<
Lemme just ask 1 question: How many of you registered for Winzip?

Exactly...going back a couple years, how many people actually registered PKUNZIP? It was like 40 bucks, and what would you have gotten besides a nice printed manual?
Don't worry, I don't abuse shareware too much http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

The point of shareware is "Try before you buy", not "Try until you die". The point here is that if you like it, you're expected (ethically and legally) to buy it, not to just play it forever.

When you say LEGALLY does that mean that if you never buy the full version and just play the shareware version, the shareware police are going to come to your house and arrest you or something?

No but you are destroying the Shareware concept by not paying for it. I have to admit though, that I use some shareware programs without paying for it.
If I don't use the shareware program very much, I won't pay for it. Yes I am to blame for this.
Some companies today know already that a lot of users don't pay for the Shareware, so they release their Freeware demo as Shareware.
That is confusing..
I still have a registered copy of PKZip tools sitting around someplace. One of the files is corrupt (A help document or something) but everything else is in working order. Floppies just don't survive a whole decade very well <Sigh>.
The problem with WinZip and PKZip and WinAMp and other such shareware programs is that they give too much away to leave you wanting the full version. Of course, what features could you have taken out of them without crippling the entire product? Well maybe winamp could have a limited size playlist or no skins or plug-ins or something like that unless it was registered. Make WinZip only work with files inside the winzip directory and disable the viewing while still compressed option. You'd see a whole lot more registered copies that way I think. I think the Apogee model works pretty good. For instance, I bought Duke 3D as soon as I got done playing the shareware version. I simply wanted more and they gave me something to look forward to.

yeah, but Duke3d GAVE you more. 7 full levels. all sounds, music. THAT was a demo. Not Heretic II or Quake2 demo. Winamp should be free anyway.

Still no one has answered my question, why was the Wolf2 stuff taken out of ROTT? And about the shareware thing, if I like a game a lot (like Duke3D, Wolf3D, Quake, etc.) I'd buy it. If it's OK, but not the type of thing I'd actually buy, I use the shareware version and occationally play. ROTT wasn't that fun for me, I first played it when I copied the shareware from the Duke3D CD, so I already had a much better game. I use lots of shareware, but I don't always like it.

Because id wasn't happy with the way the work was progressing, and withdrew their permission to use the Wolfenstein name in there. We didn't want the work to be lost, so it was renamed.

That's sounds like a good reason, after all I don't think people would have enjoyed it as much if you guys didn't need to create a news story and characters. Maybe you would have sold a few more copies, but ROTT is great becuase it abandoned simple killing and added verity and a good diffrence. It like now 1st Person game I've played, and I think changing the game any diffrent then it is now would be wrong, I mean to delete the old, I think procress in ROTT development (like with DOOM) would be neat but something tells me TerminX is going to reply b4 Joe3DR with

I still play the shareware version of heretic and never found the full version so I'm stuck with what I got until I find and I doubt I will.

Nice idea, but if nobody registered It would have never been as good as it is today http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif
As for registering more than one copy of a piece of software, I have lots of computers around the house, all networked, all capable of playing a rather nice game of Zdoom, am i really going to get more than one copy of the doom2 1.9 iwad just to play 16 player? NO!

That way people could edit it and distribute it.

Are you sure? I thaught that was the only bit of the program left that ID got really pissed of if it was pirated.
BTW you are right that is a lot of computers http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif all in a LAN type set up, oh I am so lucky http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif
