anything except 3d. I'm sick of 3d this and 3d that. Keen would suck ass in 3d.

Keep the sidescroll thing, but at least add better graphics, like in Jazz.

i think a 3D Keen would be pretty rad, if it was like Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie.
Aurora51

again, why 3d? Why does 3d make a difference? I would much rather have a game with hi-res and clean, fun graphics that would run on lowend systems. 3d doesnt mean good gaming. Its a BIG myth!

i'm not saying it would be better in 3D; i'd love to see a new 2D Keen as well. but Mario 64 is a great game and i think a Keen game done in a similar style would be awesome.
additionally, I predict that in the distant year 2001, this thread will mysteriously appear at the top of the forum.
Update: I was wrong. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/tongue.gif

I would like a Mario64 type Keen game. Mario64 was one of the best games I played in a long time. If Keen were made similar, it would rock.

That's probably the format Keen will take whenever it returns.

Well, Aurora, we have something in common...hehe...
I don't like 3D games...!!!
Keen 7 should be like CK 4-5-6.
NOT making a 3D game of Keen, now that's what I call original...

Hey there!
I think a Keen 3D in first-person perspective would be fun! For example, weapons could then be:
1. Raygun.
2. Vorticon Hyperpistol.
3. Sweetflower Spores.
4. Ticky Bombs.
5. Neural Stunner.
6. Keen 6 Weapon.

Banjo Kazooie is essentially Mario64 with nice graphics and a bear with a bird on his back replacing the mushroom munching plumber.

How can Keen7 be a 3d game if it's gonna have the same feel as the original? Duke certainly had a different feeling in 3d.
Guest
12-15-1998, 08:08 PM
Well.. the way I see it the "same feeling" is the scrolling.. run & jump effect. So, it could be 3d rendered graphics, but still use the side-scrolling system, somehow, maybe!?
Guest
12-18-1998, 06:35 PM
It could be 3D graphics like in Donkey Kong Country, where the things in that were pictures of a 3D object, or it could be like the PSX game Einhander, where (I think) it was all 3D stuff, but there was no option to go in depth, just up, down, left, right. So it could be done that way, just an idea.

You know, Joe, I seem to remember you saying something.
Didn't you say something like that Apogee was not going to make another Keen game? Didn't you say that no one was ever going to make another Keed game? Didn't you even say that ID Software was never going to make another Keen game? Weren't you rather forceful in that respect? Did you not say that we should give up hope for another one?
Now I seem to see that you say "when the next comes out" intead, as if you're expecting it. Were you wrong Joe? I don't know, but I think that our lobbying for a new Keen seemed to have some sort of effect, but didn't you say that it wouldn't?
Anyway, enough with that.
I think a 3D Keen game would be like Offspring: appearance of violence, but none. Actually Offspring is sort of opposite: really fast paced, exciting, and happy music with depressing lyrics. I like Offspring, and I would like a 3D Keen, even though it doesn't match.
Actually, I like 3D games except that 3D GAMES SUCK!!!!!
Love,
Commander

Never said it would never happen. The only thing I said was that it would never happen from id Software.
I've always said there will eventually be another one - it's just there's no plans for it now, and there's probably not going to be any plans any time soon.
However, there will eventually be more. I never said it would never happen.

What is the point of realistic games? I thought the whole point of a game was to do something you couldn't do in everyday life! That's how games became so popular, but it seems that now they are fading...

Okay, back to the subject...
I think that Keen7 would have to span several planets, since Mortimer's ultimate goal, if memory serves, was galactic domination. Keen should visit many familiar places, and characters (like the Oracles (for certain, imagine how this could help the plot http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif ) and the Dopefish). Perhaps every planet in the game could have 3-6 levels, and then a boss... after the boss, you would have to fly to the next planet with a Terminal Velocity-like Bean-with-Bacon sequence.
To put my two cents into the 3d issue: my brother is currently playing the new Crash Bandicoot game behind me, and it looks GREAT. The 3d adds to the environment and immersion, and the game still has that "platform charm". You really should back up your opinions, as saying "3d sux" rarely sways anyone or even gets them thinking.

I think if keen went the way of Mario64, Keen would have to be cartoonish. I wouldn't be able to play it if things looked real. That is, realistic real. I'd want it to look cartoony real, if you know what I mean . . . ugh, nevermind. :p

I don't really care if Keen 7 is 3d or not. But what I do care about is that Apogee doesn't loose the original idea of the game. The game was FUN, and had an ongoing storyline. I'd hate to see Keen 7 loose it's ability to be fun. I'd also like Keen 7 to have the sotryline that Keen 5 and 6 said it would have; SAVE THE UNIVERSE!

3-D games suck! It would ruin the keen element in it. Take Duke for example. I mean, at first he was an innocent character, and in each game he hunkier, more hunky, whatever. We can't let that happen to keen!

Commander Keen, the hunk, that would be kinda funny, anyway though, what does 3D have to do with Duke Nukem becoming stronger? I guess it doesn't make total sense, aren't the games supposed to be like the happened RIGHT after the other on ended (or maybe with a short vacation inbetween). Enough of that, to make this as short as possible, if there ever was another Keen game, it should be almost identicle to the other keen games, style-wise, 3D would be fine, but like Mario 64? I guess Keen is sorta a little kid-styled game, but as far as I know, most people who played Keen 1-6 when they were younger, have gotten a bit older now, and the same old "Even a 6-year-old can beat it" Keen wouldn't be that fun. Maybe make it like an RPG, where he goes from planet to planet meeting multiple alien races, and getting party members to join, and he has to get stong enough to beat Mortimer McMire (who has somehow risen from the dead, or whatever happened to him after Keen3). Or possibly a strategy game where he has to run around planet X (or whatever the planet is called) and (with lots of story inbetween) get to Mortimer's hideout (and also find his way through the place) to have a final battle with him. Why do people say 3D games suck? Most games now are in 3D, and unless it's on N64, most of what I've seen is good. But anyway, it's probably pointless to even have this string here, unless there's a company out there working on this Keen game (or planning to at least), these idea's are in vain.

Keen 7 should be a side scroller. A 3d game would ruin the idea of keen. Besides a lot of classic games are going 3d now and I think that a lot of people will agree with me that it is getting boring. Keen 7 should be like keens 4 5 & 6 with better graphics but should still be able to run on older systems (386 etc.) and should be dos, not windows.

i think it should be a 3d game like diablo a top, side scroller game with multiplayer support and something like battle .net a in game multiplayer module? he should get zapped into the days of the crusades you can pick the side your on and there should be about 200 levels to make it hard.
and a boss on each one. it should also have a shops to buy new weapons and shields and he can can call upon any of his apogee friends (cosmo & duke nukem and mylo from crystal caves) to help him and with multi media support.

Wait a second, Tom Hall said FOUR YEARS AGO that he would like to make a Comander Keen game like Mario 64? Wow! Now that's a visionary. Damn Nintendo wasn't even thinking about n64 at that time. Man Tom Hall IS GOD!
3D was used by the military costing more than most people's total income of their life span.
Now the REAL subject of this topic:
I think TerminX's idea of having a level inside the Dopefish is GREAT! Like in Zelda 64 in Jaboo-Jaboo's belly. That was kewl. Also Comander Keen's sister? Choose from Comander Keen or Comander Spiffy? Damn, I want some royalties for that idea. Moohahahahahahahaha. Her mind can be molded after my sister who calls people "Cookies" and says "Hey kid"

Just so we don't totaly get off the subject, here's some weapons:
1. Neural Stunner
2. Hyperpistol
3. Vorticon Elite Microwave gun
4. Rapid Fire Shakadi Plasma Rifle
5. Voricon Freeze Ray
6. Shakadi Mini-mine
7. Inter-Dimensional Gateway Weapon
8. Sarco Class Disintigrator Rifle
9. Bloogton "Old Bloog Gal" class Rocket Launcher
10. Sludge Co. Atomic Rocket Launcher
Secret Weapons: Jonny Bash's Sling shot,
Boobus Bombs, and Flower pods
#3, that microwave gun, I'm curious..
What does it do? Does it fry stuff, make stuff explode, or what?

4 years ago Nintendo wan't thinking of N64? isn't 1999-4 1995? As I recall that's the year N64 was supposed to be released (maybe it was '94), unless your way of getting around this is by saying that it was the Ultra 64 (which, might I add, sounds a lot cooler). Just catching you there, anyway though, this string is getting too long, and it takes to long for me to load, so when the posts for this hit 50 I think someone should start a new one.
But on the Keen side, the secret weapons that Zingers listed (specifically the boobus bombs and flower pods), turning the enemies into flowers was kinda lame, and wouldn't the bombs be a bit to hard to use? Unless they're triggered, (like pipebombs in DN3D), they'd be almost useless. If they WERE triggered, they'd be good for multiplayer (assuming there is a modem/LAN/serial mode) games (that's the only place I used the tripbombs in DN3D).
So now I think we should start discussing what we'd like to see in Multiplayer Keen 7, definately a level editor to make your own levels, it would be cool running around in a 2D area with a bunch of weapons shooting at other keens. If anyone's ever played Metal Warriors, that's a good example. Or if it were to be a 3D game, the best multiplayer thing to copy would have to be ROTT's multiplayer (I haven't seen all the play modes, but I've heard they're good, still saving up money to get the full game, I really need a job).
One last note here, XHuman666 want's royalties for that idea, should've read that all idea's posted can be used in a game without credit given to the person who had the idea. :P (how do I do put a smiley face picture in there, the UBB Code Explination didn't help)

How 'bout 2D sprites on a 3D background? Naah, forget it....it'd probably suck.
Anyway, about multiplayer Keen, that sounds like a kick ass idea. I know if Apogee uses this I get no money or credit, but who gives!
There should be 6 levels for multiplayer mode, and they have all the powerups, enemies and weapons from their respective game. Like Keen 1, with the clams and the kangaroos and you have to find the pogo stick, to Keen 4 with the slugs, balls, and jumping mushrooms.
there also should be a co-op mode, which is like a combination of all the Keens when it comes to goals, weapons, and enemies!!!!!
I hope everyone likes my ideas :-) !!!!!!!

Just keep the running around the topographic map thing. Also, I like Keen as is. Maybe a more powerful blaster that you can find, but Keen would really bite in 3D.
