Even though I have the original registered diskettes dating back to the early 1990s, I just bought the CD so it would last more or less forever.

Too bad "Aliens Ate My Babysitter" and that "lost" game 3.5 isn't on it, though...

I dont have Keen Full. I just play the demos. I still think its cool. I could get it on an Abandonware page, but I dont really do that anymore. I go for the extinct games like Galaga and Pacman for C64 or something hehe. REALLY old games dating pre-1988 i'm into.

Keen was a _GOOD_ game? is that all you can say! Keen was brilliant! :-D Too bad most people think it's old and stupid and dated........ What's wrong with platformers anyway? Jazz Jackrabbit II's a platformer, it sold quite well, why doesn't id get together with Apogee again and make one last game?!

Yes. Commander Keen is the only game
I still like to play.
I just love the platform games.
And Keen happens to be the best platform
game ever....

Keen RULES. I have many top-of-the-line awesome-graphics new games, but I prefer keen any day. Even Keen Dreams (which is the worst for those of you who don't know) kicks butt. I say all the Keen games should be brought back (including 3.5 & 6) and put on one CD. It would be a top-seller!

Keen isn't good because of a stupid green fish! It's good because of the mix of music, graphics, and sound. The monsters fit perfectly with the environment, and so does the music. Personally, I have the original disks. I have the fully regged Keen Dreams (got it out of a catalog from SoftwareLabs). The thing that got me hooked on keen was Keen 4. It came with a Gravis Joystick. Then we bought the $90 (yep, look on the last page of the help for Keen 4) package and I waited, and waited, and waited. FINALLY! It also came with a shareware of Cosmo and Blake Stone.

a: Id doesn't need to "get together" with anyone. keen is Id's game, not Apogee.
b: Id are not interested in making a new Keen
c: if any, the person who should do a Keen game is Tom Hall, co-founder of IONstorm, so it's a bit complicated.
quote:
I say all the Keen games should be brought back (including 3.5 & 6) and put on one CD

the Id anthology has every game Id made until Quake II, and have the entire Keen series.
quote:
Keen was a good game becuase it featured tha Almight DOPEFISH

no,where did you get that idea? as much as i love that fish, there are all together 7 keen games with dozens of levels, different characters, hazards, etc. the dopefish is ONE character in ONE level in Keen4. the Keen series have much more than the fish, however popular it may be.

We started that. It was called Duke Nukem Forever, and then we abandonded the Quake II engine for Unreal tech. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

As for Keen..

Well, Keen was an awesome game - I paid for all of them out of my own pocket before I started working here (along with several other Apogee games, too).

Keen4 was the reason I got my first sound card. I was working at a place that did computer repair, and they had the first ever Sound Blaster in there, and I was used to Keen4 with PC Speaker. I heard it through the sound card, and OH MAN - I had to have one. Ran out that night and bought a Sound Blaster (the original 8 bit job) - for something like $159. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

As for Dopefish..

Dopefish was a minor character in ONE level in the game. Granted, it's a funny, silly character, but let's not get out of proportion here, folks. Keen is the major attraction, not the fish.

And this is coming from Mr. Dopefish himself. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Awww come on, Joe! That was just an engine license. It's not the same. It's not the same at all. :__( <sniff>

We're serious here. Apogee and Id should join forces once again and kick Jazz's(and possibly Rayman's)BUTT!! They just gotta. for the sake of their loyal, long-time fans. One Last Time!!!

even if Id will make a new Keen game, they no-longer publish their games through other companies. and besides, i prefer Id to collaborate with IONstorm, not Apogee

That's wrong. Same with Wolfenstein 3D. Now I'd be lying if I said we had the major input, we didn't. But to say we did nothing more than just publish it is flat out incorrect.

moron, it's FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) not FAC. And just because the primary focus is on 3d games doesn't mean that Keen can't return. Look at Super Mario 64. Mario makes the jump to 3d and it's the best mario game out there!!

Found some more on what we did on Wolfenstein 3D. Go check out the news on our site from January 1999 and look for a piece entitled "Scott Miller Interviewed" on the Jan 25th entry.

Found this as I was converting the news pages from the old site to the new site today.

quote:
for example we asked id to make the game to be more action oriented, because early alphas of the game had too much strategy involved, such as searching guards and hiding guards so that their bodies would not be discovered

you did WHAT????

Joe's right. that kinda stuff may sound good now, when there's current technology to support and enhance that kind of thing being in a game, but think of how crappy it would be if something like that was implemented using the Wolf 3d tech.:-P
The concept sounds nice, but judging from what was available at the time, you might've been left with the feeling that it would've been better if they left it out.

To get the gist of what I'm saying, imagine putting multiplayer co-op support in "Tomb Raider". Doesn't sound too good, does it?

So, what's the moral to this story? What works great in one game may not necessarily benifit another. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

that's just like all the today gamers who think gaming started with "half-life".
just look at all the features available in all the classic games, they may not be "realistic" or anything, but still they are good, chalenging, etc. i believe that if Id thought about doing the more "adventure" features they had the ways to accomplish them.

quote:
that's just like all the today gamers who think gaming started with "half-life".

Listen. I'm sure that Scott had a good reason for requesting that feature removed. I was merely putting forward what, in my mind, would be a plausible reason. If what you're getting at is that I'm knocking the tech because its old, you're WRONG!!

This is exactly the reason I used Tomb Raider as an example. To thwart such a misconception. What I'm saying is that perhaps Mr. Miller scrutinzed whatever method id was employing to include this feature and decided that it would hurt rather than help gameplay.

So, no sir, I am not one of those "today gamers who think gaming started with 'half-life'" I'll have you know, as I've said several times before, that I still play classics such as "Pharoh's Tomb" and "Jumpman Lives".
