It looks awesome... it looks hardcore. I don't know how much detail I should go into... one scene was a bunch of police-like SWAT dudes looking hardcore and pissed off. Slick looking helmets and carrying the "we are ready to kill you" dimeanor. One of Dukes guns in another shot looked very awesome. Very true to DN3D.(How am I supposed to describe what a gun looks like?) Lighting is awesome. I wanted to ask if the images has been photoshopped, becuase, well, they looked really ***** superior (and true to Duke Nukem).

It's true. I just printed three shots on our color laser printer five minutes before we left to see the movie. It was a really impulsive thing to do, and just for the hell of it, for a fellow Shacker. We caught up with him literally at the last second on the curb of the parking lot. It doesn't mean, or predict anything, and I maybe shouldn't have done it, but like I said, it was just an impulse.

Yesterday I came across an old archived thread in the best-of-section where Charlie Wiederhold (in a quite furious posting) explained the reason for total media blackout.
Game developers are able to deduce gameplay from a couple of screenshots as he said. Therefore 3DR don`t want to take any risks that DNF- while already being late- also could get copied or spoilt in some way or another.
But it won`t be much longer until they show it, I`m really optimistic about that now.
George, are all levels making progress now ? When PC Gamer got to see them you said that there were two that hadn`t been started yet. If all parts are at least in pre-alpha-state now, then it has to be, right ?

Well I wouldn't go that far, but I agree, a screenshot says more then a thousand words. You can sum up all the featurse but you need a visual to actually, well, see it. It's not that I'm saying he doesn't care (i already said this in two other threads, but they got locked/deleted), but it just seems a tad unfair towards the huge fanbase that has been waiting for years.

I think this just shows that George is as anxious to show their work on DNF as we are to see it. Have you looked at some of Mr Sleepy's other posts at Shacknews?
He seems to suffer from a literary version of Gilles de la Tourette syndrom.
Also, since he apparantly has some form of attachment to 3DR/George Broussard (as a fellow "Shacker" at least), I wouldn't consider him the most objective source available.
The commentary itself is highly undescriptive as well, with the "how am I supposed to describe what a gun looks like?" taking the cake.

Well in his defense, DNF media is known to cause sensory overloads. We're usually left catching details days after first(and continuously since) viewing a screenshot. Yes it does; this guy likes to type in hyperbole, which means that pretty much everything he writes is exaggerated.
For example, "cool" becomes "awesome" and "unimpressive" becomes "shit".

He didn't say that he waited; but then again; in some way we are all "waiting" for screenshots. More accuratly, we're waiting for the game, and screenshots are just something that will come before the release, so next to being a fan and talking about DNF on the forums we *are* waiting for some media.

Also, I wouldn't call being/waiting here for six years impatient, anyone who comes here and demands media or is very impatient would leave after a couple of weeks. I'd say most people here are very patient, but they are waiting/expecting stuff to be released in the future.

He seems to suffer from a literary version of Gilles de la Tourette syndrom.

The only reason DNF is in the five spot for me is because... three of my other games are coming in a week or so. Prey, we've seen a bunch of stuff and know what it looks like and how it's basic feel is.

With DNF, we just know that it's being made and it will kick all sorts of ass. So with everything with DNF up in the air, I keep it on my top 5 list. But in the five slot.

lol, I actually just did that! He seemed nice - he didn't tell me a thing but he did say "It will be unprecidented..." from the few things he was told.

I knew this game was going to come out, and I never doubted it once -but this makes me feel better about the developement for some reason- and I haven't seen the screenshots lol.

Sweet! Glad to hear that somebody's finally seen a screenie and to read their impression of what the game looks like. I've been waiting pretty much silently here for years checking in from time to time to see what's going on. It's nice that some game info is finally trickling out and now this. I'm in no rush to see the screenshot - it'll be out when it's out, and I'm sure I'll run into screenies somewhere online when they're ready. I'll DL the demo when it's here (if there's a demo) and give the game a shot. If I like it, I'll buy it, if not, I'll move on. I'm hoping for the best for everybody at 3DR (that the game's well received) cus this game's been a long time coming and I know everybody there's put A LOT of work into it. In the end, though, I just hope it's something I can have some fun with.

I'm from germany, not far away from you... well, i'm waiting since Duke3d too...actually my friend told me in 1997 that DNF is in development and that he preordered it for November.

And I was so surprise and happy to hear about DNF while I was toying with the build editor....we always made huge coop maps against tons of monsters,
soon Starship Troopers will be out for the PC and it will
bring great co-op memories again.

I wish DNF had made it earlier, because the shop where my friend preordered closed 6 years ago and I dont see my friend too often anymore. :P

i dont think the new media will be screenshot(s) It will be video, gameplay footage. DNF is not that kind of game. I think George will definately want to show off interactivity elements and stuff. This is what Duke is all about, not supa dupa graphics.... IMHO

Personally I don't think they'll release any new media until they're almost ready to release the game. From what I've read they don't want to give anything away...anything at all. I imagine there'll be an article or something in a magazine that'll have some media shortly before release.

While the (most recent) restart was technically in 2002, it was very very late in 2002 (like around xmas) so basically 2003. So 2003 + 4 = 2007 right?

And also, there are a few george-quotes that strongly imply that pretty much *everything* was scrapped and redone... do you have a quote that says they kept the interactivity?

Its always good to hear evidence that they werent starting completely from scratch in 2003. However, I always thought that was the case. This is incorrect. While the new renderer was finished in November 2002 it obviously was started before that more precisely in early 2002. As for the interactivity there are some quotes I will see if I can find them.

Ok these two GB-Quotes answer my question pretty clearly, and I must say it doesnt quite sync up with you, kristian.

Ok yes it seems the renderer was finished before 2003, but either
1) a renderer isnt as much work as we all seem to think, at least compared to all the other work they've done.
OR
2) when you take into account the other slow-downs they were experiencing around that time, it kind of cancels out that 'headstart'.

These 2 GBquotes back me up pretty solidly I think. Basically yeah they had some work done before 2003 (eg the renderer, and maybe some existing interactivity code - still not clear on that part) but due to other factors we can basically think of them starting *from scratch* in 2003. How so? for example, suppose they had 3 months of solid work completed *before* 2003, but then in 2003 they 'lost' 3 months due to various slow-downs. Consolidate this and we can basically think of them starting from scratch in 03.


So accounting for end of year slow down and Xmas vacations, you can assume a pretty much fresh start from 2003 forward.

They did more than re-write the renderer, they also re-wrote the animation system, the lighting system, the visibility system, the AI system, the sound system and the high level physics code and as we know in 2004 they changed physics engine to Meqon. So it is correct to say that they restarted.

You seem to be misunderstanding something since you list gameplay code and interactivity seperately from eachoter. The interactivity is part of the gameplay code in other words they could keep it because they could keep the gameplay code.

Perhaps one way to look at it is like this: DNF 2005 is to DNF 2001 as JfDuke + the HRP is to the orignal Duke Nukem 3D/Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition. The only difference beeing that they have changed the story and gameplay and added alot of content. Also the underlying technology changes have been much bigger. But still the old .cons still work just fine with Jfduke.

Imagine Duke3D had the first of those 2 features back in 1996, now imagine someone made a new model for the rat and for the microwave. You could still take the rat and put it in the microwave.

If this feature was in before the restart things would have functioned exactly the same as with the HRP example I gave.

So you can throw away all the old content and the underlying code will still work when you add back in models for say the microwave and rat.

I wasn't aware they kept gameplay code intact. In that case, I think it would be safe to assume it has interactivity levels that would put MMORPGs to shame, lol. We'll find out eventually I guess.
