Here are some screenshots of my level for Duke 3D that I'm building. What do you think of them? Suggestions?

Yaeh.. they look like they were taken with camera or something...
You know you can JUST press F12 in game to take screenshot.

That has to do with how I changed it from a pcx file to a jpg. I printed them out, and scanned them back in, which ended up making them look worse.

Why on earth would you go through all that trouble to get it to a jpg (not to mention the crappy quality) when there is tons of free software that gets the job done.

I know, it's not a good way to get it transferred to jpg. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'll have to get one of those programs, especially if I want to get my map actually up on these forums.

yes, they are the mini boss version, and there are actually 4 of them right there. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif One of them is way off in the distance where the crosshair is pointing, and the other is behind the dying battlelord.

OT: Happy Bday Rider.
Back ON topic: Level seems rather small from the SS's and whats up w/ the one where your just facing a wall. Would like to see more, but Battlelords always = a plus http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There's more to the level than what was shown in the shots, and the one screenshot was actually looking into a dark room, but you can't see much in that one, I'm not really sure why I took that screenshot. I'm not anywhere near finished, so there will be lots more than there is now. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Unfortunately, if I wait untill it's done before I put it on these forums, it'll be too big of a file.

Now I have a working security camera in that area, and I also put in an extra defense system. I'll try to get some updated screenshots on these forums soon.

Here's the same area now. The wall is a lowerable defense system, and the battlelord was just killed by the laser shooter. I'm standing in the ship.

realism 1, map 0. He is just standing inside of space. If he floating it'd a different story, but he's just standing there. Whats the background on your map, is this a city inside of a large spaceship (AKA Dyson Sphere) or whats the deal?

That part of the map is Duke's spacecraft that can launch nukes to destroy things on the earth part of the map(which has a vacation setting-swiming pools, beach, water rides, etc). http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif The battlelord has been launched from an enemy ship to destroy Duke. That screenshot no longer accurately represents that area, I've changed some things.

He's not actually walking on space right now, a few hours after that screenshot was taken, I put him on a space platform, to make it more realistic. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now that I think about it.. The gritty ness of the screenshots, AKA, the quality could be a pretty good filter for the cameras in the level...

Yes, please. Are you still doing the print-and-re-scan thing?

There are free programs out there to convert picture formats, or even just open it in some proram that supports pcx and resave it...

It's hard to tell from the screenie, but in the pool shot, is the water level, level with the walk way? If it is, you should lower the water level a step or two.

You know, you could just use the PrintScreen button and Paste it in paint for extremely better quality.

the floor and ceiling textures of that bar is the same as the floor and ceiling textures of the room itself. weird

Just had a very violent and bloody Dukematch in my level with bots.
It was very cool. I like how the aliens re-spawn, it makes it really intense.

Its looking pretty good. But.. here are some suggestions

DETAILS!! Add some sprites here and there.
Work on youre texturing a little. Some stuff looks really weird and unrealistic. Also try making things more realistic, height and distance wise. Some things look kind of weird.

In the second shot there is a wall in the back with the blue sky texture, is it meant to be that way or do you not know how to make a wall parallax sky?

To elaborate on what oak man said, making a wall appear non exsistant under a paralex sky is a great skill to aquire in mapping with both build and mapster.
It is also easy as pie, basicaly what you do is create a thin sector just inside the wall you would prefer to not apear and you parallex the ceiling of this new sector and drag it down to ground level. Make sure both sectors have the same sky texture.

The way I do it is not by making this new sector independent of the wall you wish to block, but by making it adjacent to the wall you wish to block.
I do it like that because it keeps the wall count down, athough I do believe it would work if you use an isolated sector as well.

Well, I'd like to make the wall a parallax sky, but when I started the map, I used the city skybox. I'd like to change the skybox used by the whole level to the blue one, but as far as I know, there's no way to do that without corrupting the skybox completely. So, I can't parallax any of the blue sky areas. :(

Ohhh, I see. You can use multiple sinlge frame sky textures in the same map but if any sky texture you use is composed of more than one frame then no. I get ya, Such as the city texture your using. I think the way around that would be to rid of all the multiframe sky textures, but I dont ever remember needing to do this myself but at the least its worth a try.

There is another alternative but it would require the use of editart. People have gone as far as to do there own sky textures in editart, Multiframe sky textures are most difficult because you have to match the frame pattern of an exsisting multiframe sky textures from 3d realms, for the seems to blend properly. Single frame sky textures are a breeze if you have a good photo editing program to work with.

Thanks for the advice. :) I'll think about doing my own sky texture, because getting rid of all the textures that I don't want never worked for me when I tried it before. :(

Very nice - although I'd recommend using glass for that fish tank rather than a force field.

Sorry about that, but only one of the places in the shots is actually a secret area. :) There are lots more secret places. :) Some of them are easy to find, and some have no clues and you just have to be lucky to find them.

Thanks for the comment :) , but I'm not sure I want to use glass because I tried making a blocked glass wall instead, and I was able to blow it out with a rocket launcher, and just walk into the tank, which was sort of weird.

You're use of tile i think 126 is normaly a lighting fixture. The use of it around the frame of the fish tank and aas part of the air conditioning duct work with the fan is odd.

I'm still working on the map, and hopefully I will release it soon. All the keys/switches/ are in the level and it can be finished. I also have finally got enough weapons in the level so that you always have plenty. I'll have to stop and release it soon, because if I'm not careful I'll cross the sector limit. The map is currently 264kb, and has about 850 sectors. I'll try to finish it over the Thanksgiving holiday. :)
