I was just wondering if we'd be seeing any unique vehicles in DNF that most developers have ignored.
The main thing I'd really like to see in DNF is a large Hovercraft like the one in Rumble in the Bronx. That would totally kick ass to drive a hovercraft through a city, or desert. It would also be nice to drive a police cushman, I know it doesn't seem like much, but it might be fun. A segway? Hoverboard? Moller Skycar?
What are some other vehicles that other developers have truly ignored?

How about any vehicle without the top down? Vehicles in shooters mostly always give you an open view of the sky because otherwise it's too confined-looking. Hence the jetskis, motorbikes, dune buggys, etc. An interior view of a car from a FEAR video puts it among the only recent games I saw that's an exception.

delta plane.. there were one or two in far cry..but still unusual..
an helium proppeled balloon..

Catipillar was a good one, maybe a bulldozer would also be nice. Parachute? Not really a vehicle, but you could control it. hanglider? A huge alien walker like the striders?
I can't wait to play this game.

I'd like to be able to fly a helicopter. It may be more difficult to handle than other vehicles, but I get the satisfaction of hovering above the alien bastards while shooting them to their demise.
Original ideas I liked that I read in above replies:
UFO/Flying Saucer
Airplane
Balloon
Sledge Pulled by Dogs (snow level?)
Cerberus, I'm not sure what you mean by rollercoaster cars but I'd like to see Duke riding coasters and doing drive by's in them and such.
I agree with Kalki in regards to interior viewing of the vehicle. Although there should be an option for the user to switch to third person. In the E3 2001 video the Jetski and Motorcycle were driven in first person view, and I think it should stay that way as the primary mode.
I would have Duke ride on George's back under the following conditions:
George will not have a bad back as a result. He won't be able to make any more sequels otherwise.
He shouldn't get tired too often. Duke can be a handful if you know what I mean.
I'd like to be able to do drive-by's while on George's back.
Duke should be curteous to George if he's going to get a ride from him. No whipping, kicking, or insults.

There are flying saucers in the PS2 game Destroy all humans... And in the old PC game Incomming... (the UFO's in Incomming were pretty cool... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif)

What vehicules will Duke use?
I've seen a donkey and a motorcycle in the 2001 trailer... Will those things be part of the game? Are any others planned?

I hope there will be a Harley in DNF..!
But i wouldn't want all kinds of drivable vehicles... That just doesn't seem Duke-like...
But a few sequences with special vehicles like Jetplanes, or similar woulnd't be too bad..!
I also don't think that vehicles only will play a part in the game on special events/missions..! (if there are ANY vehicles in DNF that is)

The deliverator was seen in the 99 screenshots IIRC. I'm going with most of it on foot with vehicles here and there
1) Jetpack (does this count as a vehicle?)
2) Not something big to drive, just ride in
3) Motorcycle seems Duke to me

i would like to drive vehicles from time to time, but
1) there have to be enough space to drive them.
2) make driving then cool and easy... even if you have to sacrifiy the "realism" factor.

acutally i liked far cry vehicles more... except that in far cry you couldnt see the road so well...

*An AV-8 Harrier II
*Some kind of alien hovercraft, preferably through long-abandoned subway tunnels
*One of those attacking rocket craft from Lunar Apocalypse
*A gigantic spacecraft large enough to qualify as a level unto itself
*A forty-foot Alex Trebek mecha

I had a dream that I was playing DNF (Hmm, I've had an awful lot of them lately), in a portion that involved a hovercar. Only the cool thing was, you didn't need it at all. It was just there because some guy left it there, and you could walk up and drive around in it--it wasn't required for anything at all. Well, it was a cool vehicle in my dream, anyway.

heres a few vehicle ideas.
1. Some kind of hard core truck, a hummer or something that can bash stuff out of its way. With room in the back for any stuff duke wants to move, or passengers (ie. chicks!)
2. A harley. For definite. I think Vice City proved that nothing's more fun than weaving a bike around traffic and firing at things in your way
3. A hovercraft (small one), with mounted guns. One that uses proper physics w/momentum, so you can spin the thing on its axis to face behind you and fire at the bad guys while still moving forward
4. Some sort of wacky gyrocopter like the one from mad max 2
5. Jet Skis? Saw em in the 2001 vid, still like the idea

I think we can all guess it was a real vechile. There were several vechile sections in the 2001 edition. (The Jet Ski, The tunnel car, the camel/donky, the EDF jeep/truck, the harley.)

I don't mind scripted vehicle sequences or action sequences, it could even use Indigo phrophecy's Keys system to go through the sequences. check out Indigo Phrophecy AKA Fahrenheit, its really good and its keys system would be a great addition to the game.

Sequences are one thing, scripting special vehicle moves for sequences is another. That is messing with gameplay and I don't want it. Moves like that should be handled within the vehicle's physics parameters.

I am almost sure it is scripted.
The bike makes an 180 degrees rotation while going under the truck - to perfect and slick, for me.
Secondly I guess George said the 2001 video was a benchmark of what they could do. A very few (if any) things from the trailer, were actually in game.

In HL2 in the "lost coast" the enemy blows up a Chimney and you can choose.... brake... or pass under...
is a mix....the explosion is scripted but the player choose...goin under...brake...

I'm pretty sure the bike is scripted, but Duke probably isn't, so Duke controls the bike, while you make him fire at enemies.
I honestly don't think that a full action bike sequence would work in a first-person view, controlling it would be hard, too much going on, and to make it believable, you'd die if you hit ANYTHING, or at least fall off and roll quite a distance.
All the vehicle scenes in the 2001 trailer look to me like the vehicle (or donkey) is scripted while player is controlling the view/weapons.

Yeah but a hover-craft is fundamentally easier to control, and in most games 'dumbed down', so that if you hit something you just strafe out the way or something. If you're on a motor-bike and you hit something, you fall off, and (with some luck) pick yourself up, pick your bike up, aim it away from the obstacle and carry on.
Think bikes in GTA, it's VERY hard to drive those well, and they have a 3rd person view of your surroundings and limited firing control.
You'd need a huge stretch and some devilishly good controls to make it work, I'm fairly skeptical if it CAN work. I think if anyone can do it, it's 3dr, but I think it's fundamentally something that might not work, if you strive for a balance between speed, action and ease-of-control then you're going to suffer in one or more of those, as the more speed and action, the harder the control etc.
Whereas a scripted bike solves ease of control because you don't have to do anything at all.
IMO it makes sense anyway, as this is a first person shooter, not a vehicle simulator, or a first person driver =)
Also, Duke doesn't HAVE to have both hands on the handle-bars, he can take one hand off and fire. Hell, he can take both hands off to fire if he really wants, he's the Duke!

You CAN ride the bike, control it and cause mayhem all over the place, not necesarily with guns but maybe kicking stuff that trigers something,i dunno, but you can drive a bike full speed and experience a lot of action in my opinion. if you get killed in a crash its very simple, load and retry, all games had been always that way in difficult parts.

I agree and I don't think it was scripted. As Little Conqueror said, the bike sequence could have been some sort of chasing sequence with a time limit or something like that.

The truck aint moving, its parked. Duke has to go under it to go through that area, I went through that sequence frame by frame. They had him do the 180 for fun. Its clearly a player controlled vechile. As far as I know 3DR doesnt want Instrusive gameplay mechanics.
The Minecart is a completely different story. As it seems you are even able to control the movement of that to some extent. (Tilting it, probably "breaking" it too).
On that same token, the jetski is very obviously a player controlled vehicle.
BTW, it never even crossed my mind that they werent Player Controlled, and i've looked over the videos frame-by-frame many times. They ring no differently then they did in Half-life, Red Faction, the old Terminator FPS (which let you drive a jeep and a Hunter Killer I believe)

Well the hovercraft we had designed for the HL mod was still pretty early when we went down. But you could go up and down and fly on the horizontal axis (your mouse didnt really have any control over your flight path as I remember). It appeared to handle no differently then the bike in the E3 2001 video. In fact, I could (and often did) perform that turn. Unfortunatly no, the entire mod was lost about... Sheesh, like two years ago. Both of us had some pretty crappy computer trouble. (Not to mention a drop in actual development). Worse with him because he was the coder, I couldnt code to save my life.
But it was fun, considering it was buggy. We had basically copied a lot of the stuff from the 2001 video. I think we even had plans for a bike too. I always figured that if you turned hard and applied the brake that the bike did a 180 slide around. Pretty much exactly how a car will do the same thing if you pull the emergency brake and cut the wheel.

But on that note, if you compared footage of other vehicles (Like the Half-Life 2 buggy and so on) to the Duke Bike, you can just see the guys at 3D realms REALLY tweaked the handling on the bike to make it fun and easy to control.

What would be awsome is for some areas that use like a bike or a car or something you can drive or operate and choose whether or not you want to use them rather than being forced to use it. Imagine walking down main street putting a .44 or .50 caliber round through reckless alien drivers windshields as they try to run you down and jumping the bull as they fly at you. Sure it would make the scene go from a 2 - 10 minute level go to a 20 - 40 minute level but thats something to think about right?

Hey in GTA San andres...you drive a "bike" and shoot... yes is in 3dr person...but It's te same in first... you drive with " W A S D" and space for hand brake... fire? yes! whit mouse.... but limited only pistol... a sub o shotgun is imposible to shoot in a bike (only Norris...:) )

The difference is Duke isnt a GTA style game. The mechanics are different. In the video his hands are clearly locked to the mesh of the bike. There is no sign that they could move. Chances are they wouldnt want Duke to do anything but driving while on the bike.

The afterburner simply made you fly all over the place in ridiculously high speeds... You couldn't even make turns with the car... :D

Running into one or ywo enemies wouldn't be too bad... But it would feel all too un-varied if that's the only way to beat them... And ignoring enemies (in case there might be fights on it) wouldn't be very good... I mean, enemies hurt you, so if you don't manage to kill them, or dodge them, you'll obviously get damaged... :o And i don't like it in games, if you can't avoid geting damaged in certain occations...

I don't agree, making some enemies hard to get/find makes gives it a bit more replayability IMO. :) But of course, this should not go for half of the enemies. ;)

Well, apart from the motor cycle D3D had the same. Most enemies can be found and killed, but for some you have to go through some extra trouble to find them. And if you then saw you missed some you still had to replay the level. That is how it is allways done and I wouldn't want it any other way. (of course, saving before the level end and then ability to then go back is a possibility, like in D3D )

I'd rather have the enemies placed throughout the level being the ones that count... And Enemies in secret areas will add a extra kill to the total count...
Say, you have to kill 36 enemies in the first level, and 4 of them being somewhere in a secret... You could get a total count just by killing 36 enemies... Which would be 36/36
But if you also kill the secret enemies, you get a 40/40... And if you miss 1 enemy from the regular level and killed all the "secret" enemies, the count would say 39/40...
And of course, if you discover a secret with 1 enemy in it, and you miss that enemy, but kill all the regular levels enemies and all other secret enemies (except this 1 enemy), you also get 39/40...
Man, i explained it all in every detail, i hope you understand my point... :D

That's just a "stats screen" thing... If the stats screen ain't in, i wouldn't care at all...
But it's something that makes you want to replay a level becasue it tells you if you actually missedsomething, and therfor giving you a reason to try the level again, or several times, to overcome yourself...
Especially if you want to see how fast you can go through the level, or how fast you can do it while killing every enemy... It's like a challenge that you decide yourself if you wanna participate... :cool:
Of course it would be cool if you got some sort of reward for achieving something from the stats screen, but that would be unfair for players who simply aree unable to reach them i think... (Not sure about this last part though)

Yeah I got it. I just don't agree. ;) For me it adds to the replayability of the game.
But like you said, it is only a "problem" if the stats screen is in. :)
Can be partly fixed by putting enemies in secret locations on a secret enemies list. But not completely because you will also still have those enemies on the hard to reach places which are not secret, but also not required to pass though so you still miss them. ;)

Nope. Logically only enemies you're able to kill must be in the stats screen.
Btw, I seriously doubt about these stats screen after every level since levels mostly will be, as I think, seamless continuation of each other. Only load screens. But if there'll be like several parts of the game(not episodes) logically divided then between them stats will be appropriate. Or, the better solution, stat screen will be in in-game menu. If you want - you'll compare count vs total.

I could understand if it was a boss...
But regular enemies should "really" be in the actual level if so...
Also, anyone could anytime use some sort of clipping cheat (since there won't be any cutscenes in DNF), and killing the enemy by going to that unreachable area...
That way, you would kill an enemy, which actually isn't part of the total enemy count in the stats screen, and that would result in 1 count too much...

I just came up with an idea for DNF while driving vehicles. Something that I thought was annoying in Crysis but would have been an easy feature to include but its very Duke-ish so thats why I thought i'd put the idea here and hope to see it.
While driving a vehicle when someone shoots at your windscreen it shatters and u can't see shit. So I thought wouldn't it be cool you could press the kick button and duke kicks the screen out so u can see clearly again. Very cool and seems easy to introduce. Patent pending :O :)

I think it makes sense, especially since everything is supposed to be through Duke's eyes so third-person isn't likely to be in the game.
It seemed to me from the 2001 video that the vehicles in that were driven for you, so you probably just got relegated to a shooting role. That I wouldn't mind if the driving is done reasonably well and with enough cool factor to support it. Duke games in my opinion aren't the kind where driving vehicles is an essential aspect.

Yes Peoplessi I've never driven a car in my life because I've never punched a screen out. Well you can show me how its done. Being a martial artist I wouldn't think punching a screen out would be cool. Plus people might think you've never played a duke game as we all know the MIGHTY FOOT is awesome!
Alternatively I guess you can melee attack the screen with the butt of the gun which would be less work.
But honestly who wouldn't wanna see the mighty foot in action? I remember the bug where you could kick with both feet while running and shooting... Those were the days! ahhaha

I think his point is, that it's anatomally impossible to drive a vehicle, while sitting correctly on the drivers seat, while kicking the windshield... It would be so problematic moving his body in the right position to perform a kick, that it would be alot less stressfull, if he just used his hands...
Of course it would be cooler with a kick, but i can see this interfering with my field of view, overall control, and immersion factor from the overall game experience...
Count on there there is full body awareness, and you'll have to make the whole body animate without any serious clipping errors, and looking cool too...
I wouldn't want Duke to crawl up and away from his seat, because i want a solid overview of where i am driving Moving my whole body (and my head, thus my field of view) only makes me lose grip of the situation... And a foot that just grows up before me, and kicks out the windshield beyond the steering wheel, just seems off...
Seriously, a hit with his weapon would be so much more effective, less time consuming, and not block your field of vision (for long) either...
I agree that a kick is the coolest thing ever though, but when i watch an Action movie (i believe it's fair to cmpare it with that) i can't see a main character there, kicking the windshield, even if that looks so much cooler...

Well it is possible to push up from the seat and bring your leg around to kick the windshield out. As you wouldn't be driving at the time(hands off wheel), the vehicle would move on its own inertia for the duration of the kick. Basically if it's a quick three-second animation and if your view is locked on a track like during an interaction, I'd say it's doable.

I didn't even like that with the shrinker in Duke 3D... as much as i loved that weapon (i still do) i absolutely hated that my controls were locked once i approached the victim i shot at... i get this cool effective squishing move, and funny animation where i crush my enemy... But what about those around me, shooting at me while performing this move..!?
Exactly the same case here, except, you'd only have to do it once... Who knows if you crash during some turn in those 3 seconds, and what if you could have avoided a rocket..?!
Smart people would kick it away/break it before even driving at all of course, but some people might not do this... Which would suck, if it's such an easy thing to avoid...
But, it probably IS do-able :o it just will be sorta annoying i guess...
I wonder if there'll be any vehicles at all, or if that's gonna be like "vehicle missions" in DNF...

Well as you would be electing to quick-kick (~) to perform the move, you have to decide whether it's worth the effort given the situation you're in. I think the risk factor in moves like that can be fun, as long as we have the choice to go for it or not. I'm a big fan of Duke performing short fatalities for ego benefits, even in combat.
Keeping a vehicle's windshield intact for a time may help absorb some of the weapons fire that would otherwise hurt you. So you either wait for the windshield to be completely obliterated by the enemy or kick it out yourself.
I think vehicle missions like HL2 would be great with levels designed for long range vehicle use. The Harley can have smaller urban levels for bike stunts (E3 2001 trailer). Gus' mule with its good hearing and better sense of smell could help detect threats early, but given its speed riding doesn't have to be as necessary as with the other vehicles.
