Soul Collector

I currently making an alternative music remixes pack for
Duke3d episode 1.

I know there are two other projects already, but i have much fun making those remixes.
My goal is to make more upbeat and heavier versions of the orginals. I also dont change just only the orignal sounds.

Anyway, here's the first version of the Grabbag Remix (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=X3TWKGHF)

The pack will be released when Jfduke/Eduke32 supports Ogg/Mp3

If you guys like it, then i'll make the other episodes aswell.

Hm... I like it! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Now it would suit better for an animated intro or a level music...
Maybe you'll release the pack earlier...? *puppy dog eyes*
That one is just perfect for me. only maybe in some places the elements resembling the original melody are laid differently and it takes some time to get used to. But, overally, it's perfect. Way better for a game than most of the other remixes.

This I like. It's the nice kind of upbeat that I've been looking for, and it reminds me of the "Duke Nukes em" .S3M music file I have.

I like it.

All I can seem to produce is a cheesy 'Hahaha! Oh my!' because the quality of your remix caught me by surprise http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Awesome work! Altough I don't know if I'm a big fan of the random soundeffects in the background; somehow I think it'll be more awesome without them.

Well, I'm not a fan of that style of music... but it does fit Duke's one-liners throughout the song, so it's not too bad. When you said you were trying to make it "heavier" than the default tracks, I guess I had a different view of what "heavier" is...

Not bad, just not my type of music.

Yeah, I must say, I can't say it isn't alternative music...

Having said that, that is possibly the worst version of the Duke Theme I have ever heard, it's way to techno and most of the time, your not even hearing a melody, your just listening to those drum beats.

Awful.... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif

Sorry man, but I had to say it

Here's Stalker version 0.5 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N2VN7SWO)

Please tell me what is bad, and what could be added

If most of you dont like the whole song, then i'll try another one. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif

I liked em all

Stalker is f***ing great!!!!!!! Reminds me of the music from Sub Turrania (sp?) and Loaded.

This is what I think could be improved:

10-15s in, the second "bass-drum". Think it's too much at the same time. Maybe a cleaner as in eg. half life 2 soundtrack - track 12. The one you have now could be good if placed further into the song with minor modifications.

It would be nice with some long sweeping sounds going across from left to right in sync with the bass drums.

More of the guitar, louder and more bass to it.

Also, more variations throughout the song would be nice.

But it's a good effort!

I guess you mean Sub TErrania for the Sega Megadrive

That game had some great tracks, but unfortunately those shitty sounding old "Sega synth's" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dr. Kill

Yes, that it. OK game. Pretty hard. The same team did Red Zone for the Genesis/MegaDrive a few years later. It pushed the Genesis to it's limits. It had things that I thought the Genesis couldn't do. All without any additional hardware.... unfortunatly, it wasn't that fun.

You should check out Loaded for PS1. Got my copy for $2. Played it years ago. A lot of people hate it. It has a bad frame rate, and it has GTA syndrom; it's top down view, with a 3D environment, but 2d characters. It's still pretty good, and hard as hell. They made a sequel called ReLoaded, but I don't have it yet.

Still not the greatest, but better than the old version. Again, not my type, BUT, I must admit... that sounds like it would make good strip club music. Heh. At least it sounds more like the real song.

I'm sorry, but the the Stalker mix is pretty bad. It's got no texture, no backup instruments to support it. It's really bland. the lack of drums and higher BPM just really puts me off. I'm sorry for being critical, but it needs some work.

Sorry but the Stalker still sucks... It still sounds like it belongs in some seedy porn club... It's dreadful.... It's beyond alternative music, I loved the original compared to it.

You need to try and match the mood of the original. 3DRealms used to have the theme, the chorus and then whenever the theme comes back, it is varied slightly and more instruments are usually brought in.

Sorry, but you have to snap out of this alternative phrase for revamping duke themes....

Its called alternative remixes pack, because there are two other packs already, This doesnt has anything to do with the Alternative genre.
I hope my bad english can explain it. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Should i call it alternate remixes pack or what?

vanguard?

Yes http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif, I think its one of the best software-synths.

I'm sorry but your remixes sound too "pop"-y and really don't seem Duke enough. If they sounded more Metal-ish then yeah they might work.

I'm sorry but in my opinion these could only could work in some racing game or something.

exactly. Alternative used to mean punk in the 80's (see "Alternative" by the Exploited), but posers have ruined the word, much how they ruined punk. May they burn in hell!!! btw, Soul Collector, keep up the good work! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Punk is also a form of Rock... your avatar does fit you if it means you don't have a brain.

Now don't get personal there.

I have no idea what "alternative" really is, but who cares.

It's just music folks. Or do you guys want to label your world?

Here's version 1.0 of Stalker (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TW35DHH5)

I made it alot darker, and heavier. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Good, doesnt sound Rocky, more electronica / Mr Hahn type thing. Good though.

Also, where do you get the sounds for this project?

I prefer a rock/metal sound over this, i really don't like the main instrument, that echoing electronic noise. Just doesn't work for me. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It's still pretty bad. I mean all it is is synths thrown together, no extra types of instruments like snare drums or cymbals to cushion the sound, and STILL no depth in the song. It's just bland.

In my opinion, find Mark Knight's Stalker remixes and study them. If anything use them to learn how to cushion the synth sounds with something other than extra synths. It doesn't work to do that, use a different instrument to go with the beat.

Can't wait to hear the full pack.

Pete B

Woohoo I have some competition now...

I agree with most of the above comments but ultimately I just dont like this, sorry! Some issues I have:

1. I know its 'alternative' but please...
2. I recognise the sound of those synths any day and it seems to me like you're using Presets and not making your own sounds.
3. Its a bit minimalistic, not alot going on except drums and the lead.
4. Needs alot more EQ work, its currently a bit muddy and needs some extra top end crispy-ness.
5. My music is better http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now I dont mean to be harsh, but if you wanna make a dance track then be original, Duke tracks aren't any good for this kind of remixing. Game music is like film music, its the background ambience which sets the mood / gets the blood pumping / unleashes the emotion.

In your favour, I bet you could make a stonking techno-trance tune, but the Duke tracks just dont cut it I'm afraid.

...Oh and if I didn't already mention, I still like my music http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyone interested keep checking my thread for updates, its nearly time!

I just thought of something. There is some in-game music which I'm not doing, as they aren't official soundtracks if you get what I mean. Maybe you could have a bash at these?

Just a few I can think of right now are:

1. The strip club tracks
2. Shopping centre music
3. Arcade Music
4. Born to be wild / karaoke
