In Duke3d I like the city levels.
In other games I like other kinds of levels.
Duke is specifically for city levels.

I chose city and outside.. but I wouldnt like to be limited to cities and outside.. Its nice to have a city, but to be able to go inside buuildings is beter, not all building(would be great but long to do..unless the indide are done like in daggerfall or something http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif).. I hate to have my way blocked by an invulnerable wooden door, or a gate that we cannot climb.. or worst(cause there's worst in some games)
I like underground levels too, and space ships and all.. but often, the levels are just made to be made.. like, the rooms are meaningless..sometime so meaningless that you can forget inside what kind of building you are..

I have no preference of outside and inside, I believe every game should have both.
but the theme I prefer most is claustrophobic metallic environments (doom 3, duke nukem episode 2, sin's sewer levels, no one lives forever's docks and freight ship levels, ...)
I voted for city levels - not because they're my favorites, but because they looked really good in the 2001 Trailer http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Being as tho DNF was supposed to take place in Las Vegas, for sure it'll be a city-based game, and I'd be conservative to say that because Vegas has casinos, some of the maps will be indoors, or strip clubs as well, those sorts of things. As for the outdoor stuff, well, you have the Las Vegas Strip outdoors, as well as Hoover Dam. Outside of that, I really can't describe anything else as of this point in time.

Right, but I thought that the Grand Canyon was more towards Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado area, which is a few hundred miles away from Vegas. Well, I guess that can be done, why not?

totally loved the space levels in duke and it really set the game apart from other games imho. besides, you could use the jetpack. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif
hopefully we'll see a return to space levels in dnf. i'd love to see a level set in zero g with stuff being kicked around in a weightless environment.
p.s. they better be making an underwater level or 2 also. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, I don't expect another E3L2 out of them, that was all mainly underwater, hence "Flood Zone." As for space levels, I wouldn't mind seeing one or two, but not a whole episode like Duke 3D had. Duke's a city dude, get used to that, will ya?

No that would be bad, the strippers would get very wet from the rain and they may fall in slippery mud and have to wrestle eachother to get up. Very bad indeed..
BTW the city levels were by far my favorite in Duke 3d so I hope a good chunk of DNF will be in the city.

Outdoor levels give the essence of space and mobility, to seek for cover (jungle, although not Duke style), being badly ambushed, or just explore and admire large scale scenery (most in Las Vegas).
Indoor levels like sewers and Half-Life style levels arenīt so fun. Unless they are big and diversified they just have one or two ways to go and the ambush/surprise attacks are often predictible. Plus, it gets annoying needing the flashlight too much.
The only thing in favor is the impression of being ambushed at every second and wet your pants every time it happens due to the creepy environment, but this can be done with scary monsters (like the Pig Cop reference in the FAQ), no need of scary levels.
Even though every game needs some indoor creepy levels.

Lots of options only one choice. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
City levels are definitely the Duke, but space levels, desert areas/ghost towns are what will help diversify him. Hopefully there'll be lots of variety. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Deathmatches? Smaller levels where you just blow the living hell out of everything and watch the gib-a-thon commence.
SP Levels? Can't put a price on the creativity neccessary to satiate my appetite for the innovative. I enjoy the wow factor of a level design... Make it intricate, and interesting. Make the level a presence, with ambiance and substance.
The level should, IMHO, bleed.

Yes, most certainly my favorite maps for DukeMatches, if those exist, would be in the outdoorsy, nature-type levels. These were big for UT 2004, and for Shadow Warrior, and others. However, space maps are even better yet for DukeMatching. City maps are more for coop or single player, IMHO. As always, it's 3DR's decision as far as what types of maps are best for Duke.

All aspects of a city. residential, commercial and industrial. I also like subways and aqua ducts or sewers. Space stations are also a favorite.

Tough call.... I tend to prefer a mix depending on the game.
Obviously Max Payne would not have worked well in an open desert, very little cover.
The important thing imo in most situations is a good mixture of open spaces and cover, not too much of one or the other.
Some things I DON'T like in levels:
Dead or useless doors that are locked for no apparent reason, especially if they don't TELL YOU that they are locked. In other words, doors that only exist for decoration.
I also hate almost any object that should be even minimally interactive but only exists for decoration.

...You don't care about the ambientation in a game? I feel it's what greatly defines the enjoyement of the atmosphere of a determined level, helping the player immerse himself more and consequently have more fun.

I don't know about a city but a power station near the Hoover Dam? Sure.
I don't suppose Meqon drastically updates 3DRealms with brand new features unless they're working to incorporate the Ageia stuff for their existing clients. That's unlikely but if they could only get that water flowing physics in for a dam rupture scenario, that level would rock! There was a time when such a thing was considered technically impossible. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

I'm not as interested in wether a game has my favourite type of level. I think the most importatn thing in a game is the diversity of the levels. I get bored quite quickly when the whole game is played in a space ship or in a cave system or in a tight jungle.

Hopefully the cities will be a bit like it GTA, where there are random people running around. Cities can be boring if noone is in them :-(
The reason why I kinda dislike subways is that they are often like mazes. Hard to find ones way around and when you get lost there is nothing interesting to look at.

Well, Postal 2 would be more like it, because there were tons of people running around in that game, too, and that was an FPS. IMHO, Postal 2 is what DNF should have been like. Only, you have aliens mixed in, and they do attack on contact of seeing you. Yeah, here I go again, but with your mention of GTA, I thought that the Postal series would bring that to the FPS genre even more. And Duke is a desert dude as well as a city dude, and so is the Postal Dude, so there's a lot in common there, as well as the shades and the one-liners. There's no telling where that's probably gonna go. No, I'm not turning this into a P2 vs. DNF thread.
