If anyone wants to backup their DVDs (where laws apply. Is legal in Canada), I've done this project using Auto Gordon Knot 1.95 as well as DVD Shrink for the movies (sound won't work in GK). Anyways, I did the TV shows first with Auto GK, and the quality is excellent. Size was 300 MB for shows like Futurama, and 500 MB for shows like The X-Files. The movies have great video, but no sound. I took DVD Shrink and basically threw all those onto my big 300 GB drive (4.5 GB each movie). They work now. Got some tutorials at Doom9.org I think the site is called how to do this with Auto GK.

Give it a try if you're interested.

Why not just to demultiplex DVD into streams - compress video in VirtualDub and attach audio stream as it is in the same VirtualDub?

on the other hand - why not just to buy a bundle of DVD-R's and burn 'em... Compressing video is quite time consuming...

Don't like to have a bunch of those lying around. Bought a 120 GB, 250 GB and 300 GB strictly for the project. Hard drives last longer than DVDs. Those get scratched easily. Project is done. When BluRay/HD-DVD whatever comes out, that should allow me make backups of the hard drive versions. Let's hope it's BluRay, not HD-DVD that comes out, because having it in a catridge is better than a scratchable disc.
