hehe, i just cant get into rot. I dont HATE the game. I'm just not into it. I liked the weapons, the death animations (no no, please dont shoot) and the taunting, but I just couldnt get into it. I was probly spoiled by Doom and Heretic.

I thought ROTT was an awesome game, and the fact that it was made by Apogee is the reasone why I'm a Duker, not a Quaker http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

The thing is, I lost my registered ROTT CD, and the copy on my hard drive was lost when I got a new one http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif

I still play ROTT after 4 years. It's still a great game, just like Tie Fighter.

Sure, the engine is outdated, the graphics are not that good, but it's still fun, and will be highly enjoyable ten years on.

ROTT is cool. Period.

Weapons like flamewall and firebomb + cool death animations + huge complex levels = really cool game http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

I think ROTT is one of the most fun 3d games. It's kind of like an old tile based puzzel game in 3d.

Great Replies!
What was your favorite little or big thing that you liked 'bout ROTT?

Yeah, it was rather refreshing to see Apogee make fun of how invincibility was called God Mode... and that Dog Mode stuff was just a hoot... I actually used cheat codes (egad!) just so I could play the whole game as a dog. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

I think ROTT should ppl you can play a serious game, and have really really really REALLY goofy stuff in it. ROTT made gaming companies think "We gotta go back and work on our game a LOT more!" I don't think I'll ever see a game quite like ROTT again, even if there ever is a ROTT 2, it's just not the same without Tom Hall.

ROTT had many cool features, like the "dog mode" and the the green baseball-bat, but i never found it to be realy fun, you couldn't jump or crouch and i hate the way the weapon is on the center of the screen. And after you killed a guy you couldn't blow up the corpse!!

Rott is still one of the simplest and coolest games around. Great weapons, cool bad guys, mega-simple level creating, and still one of the greatest soundtracks in Gaming History (are you listening Lee? Soundtrack......)

And there's nothing funnier than an eye-ball rolling down you're screen.

BTW - I'm actually going to perform a 30-hour process on my computer that brings back even the oldest deleted/format files, include my old Rott maps. That should be quite fun.....

I love the weapons, I love the begging of the enemies, and I love both hands holding a gun, but I just couldn't get into the levels. They were so out there and they resembled absolutely nothing. At least in Doom and Quake you had some idea you were in some hellish underground dimension. But with ROTT nothing, nada, especially for a game apparently set on Earth. That sucked, I just couldn't get into it, and stopped playing after about three levels.

ROTT was OK - I found it lacked the humour of Duke Nukem/Shadow Warrior but that's just my opinion. It also got a bit too repetitive after a while.. images/icons/rolleyes.gif Still the music was cool images/icons/cool.gif

I thought the levels were really cool and unique, and how can you say it lacked humor?First of all, it's nearly a 14 year old game, and second, it DID have alot of good funny humor."Ludicris Gibs!" anyone?" "No don't shoot, no please!"Stepping on people's neck, doggy mode, all funny classic things.

It's an overall good game, but nothing TOO special. The main problem is that it's way too easy.

The indoors levels were just fine. The outdoors levels did look like a bunch of blocks, but on the other hand were really superb design-wise.
I said it before, ROTT may not had the best engine out there, but it used whatever it had to the extreme.

I disagree - I still think ROTT is fun, and despite the opinions of some here, could still be a viable franchise.

However, it won't happen. I've always said if I won the lottery and came into a LOT of money, I'd start up my own company and license the rights to ROTT from Scott & George and revive it myself.

I also found Doom to be easy (Ultimate Doom had some thoguh levels though) But the fact that you have infinate ammo for the machine gun just simplifies it way too much. It also lacked the extreame atmosphere that Doom had. RotT is above average for the FPS genre, just not by much.

I found RotT pretty medium in difficulty terms.

They were so out there and they resembled absolutely nothing.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">But I'd have to agree - I don't know what it is but playing stuff like those subway levels in Duke 3D were quite a bit of fun because they actually resembled something in real life.

What do I think about ROTT? I think it gave me motion sickness. I also think I miss it... it's one of the games I either gave away before I moved back to Texarkana, or simply lost while making the move.

Off-topic: Lots of FPS games (like ROTT and Doom... and yes, Duke Nukem 3D) and 3rd-person action games give me vertigo. It seems to have something with too many 90-degree angles and perfectly square or rectangular rooms, because I've noticed that games with large outdoor areas (like No One Lives Forever) or oddly-shaped rooms don't have quite as severe an effect on me. Anyone out there have any input on this?

While games like Halo, Unreal Tourney and very wide and open which allevates the feeling of claustrophobia.

What you have is VERY common, I have it too from time to time. I get headaches and I have to literally lie on a bed and relax for a bit.

(Stop the world! I wanna get off! images/icons/grin.gif )

And then when I get up I go right back to the game that caused it in the first place. OK, so maybe I'm a glutton for punishment. images/icons/wink.gif

I've been told that what causes it is that your eyes tell you that you're moving, but your inner ear knows that you're not. I've also heard that having 3D sound or even a surround-sound system alleviates this problem for some people (not for me, alas).

In a series of small, enclosed rooms, your eyes don't have something relatively stationary (like a horizon) to lock onto, and this may make it worse. I haven't tried scopolamine patches, which I've also been told work for some people.

What strikes me as odd, though, is that when I was younger, I used to get motion sickness when I tried to read in the car, but games had no effect on me. Now that I'm in my 30s, I don't get motion sickness in the car, but some games cause vertigo so fast that I have to quit in just 5-10 minutes!

If you get these feelings from games, it generally means you're too close to the screen.

Give your eyes something to lock onto via peripheral vision, and it generally goes away from folks we've talked to about it. No guarantee for everyone, but backing up tends to help. images/icons/smile.gif

Hey, when I was reading this thread I thought it was posted only a short few days ago, then I realized how old it was, lol. I thought ROTT was and still is an awesome game. I just recently reinstalled it on both of our computers to try out our new network and me and my sister blow each other to pieces (suprisingly she's actually pretty good images/icons/wink.gif ). There's nothing bad about it in my opinion. Yeah ofcourse its outdated, but that doesn't make the game bad in any way. Its just a great game, lol thats all I can say.

Interesting how people actually suffer against this "vertigo" as we call it. I learned something new today. images/icons/wink.gif

When I first played ROTT, I thought it was pretty good. The only reason why I really didn't get into it is because I was accustomed to the higher resolution graphics of Duke 3D and could barely see in the game.

Crezzy_man

"Rocky Plateau" is still one of the best FPS levels ever made. Especially when combined with Lee's genius music (Cccool in this case), it's the level I keep on playing over and over again.

And that's my 2 cents. Nothing too much.

Rise of the Triad...what a great game! I still play it today (and still regret not getting the full version). I've been playing the Shareware version over and over again for years because my povo parents won't let me get the full version...and I'm not sure if you still can.

Doubt that's gonna happen, apparently George is using the old "I dont want to" routine.

I'd be happy to make an updated, hell, even GBA version, but 3DR is picky about what happens to their IP, and we cant afford a licence even if they WOULD let us do something with it.

Ah well.

I don't think GeorgeB is the bad guy in this case, you can't expect a company, any company, to start working on updates and new levels for a game this old.
A sequel, either in company or given to a third party is another thing, and I truly hope that one day we'll see one, but it's look like deep in the Not Gonna Happen territory.
I'd be happy to make an updated, hell, even GBA version<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">For the love of all that is good and holy, no. ROTT shouldn't suffer the same fate as DOOM and Wolf3d, and get a degrading "we're only in this for the money" port to the GBA.
