Apparently the new PS2 (silver version) won't be compatible with at least 7 PS2 games and over 40 PS1 games.....
As the article says, fair enough about the PS1 games, but PS2 games not working on the console is ridiculous!

That's absurd. Money before gamers, eh Sony? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

That's crazy! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif And I though Microsoft was the only ones with backwards compatability problems.

Can someone explain how a cosmetic change required a re-design of the architecture to the point where this shit happens?

Seems like they are the only people stating this at the moment, I would wait and see if it's true. Not heard any problems from the European version or is this a new slimer version?

The original "slimeline" model was actually in danger of catching fire if it was kept in a semi-enlosed area, such as on a media center shelf. The employees at my local EB got in the habit of emphatically warning buyers to keep it in an open, well ventilated area with good airflow.

It all about the share of the market. Those who buy a new PS2 now are unlikely to be shelling out right away for an XBox 360 too. That way Sony keeps a better share o fthe market.

I wouldn't give any credibilty to an article from the Inquirer. It it gets reported in some more credible sites then I'll be more inclined to believe it.
no offence...but i've said this before and i'll say it again...
it's not going to stop anybody buying the thing....that thing is going to sell more than anything else on the planet even if it was made out of cardboard and the games were made out of sh*te all they gotto do is slap the sony logo on it and it'll sell like hotcakes

Why should that be, Sony doesn't have the monopoly over the game industry. If people become dissatisfied, there are alternatives.
Yes, the slimline PS2 will overheat, catch on fire, explode, and spread plague. Also, as my friend pointed out, the CD tray could snap off real easy.
That is, if you're either very ignorant on console handling, or just a complete moron (if this applies to you, don't feel bad, I've been there; poorly placed Coke WILL ruin a Playstation power supply. :P).
There's not much shelving in my room so some systems are sitting on tupperware boxes right now, the slim PS2 being one of them. So far, the system has not given me any problems.

Could it just be an optical drive change? Same way some DVD's\CD's won't read on certain drives? Otherwise i would think it should affect all or no PS2 games...

well if i remember rightly when the ps2 launched there were a number of problems with it like erasing game data, over heating, too many jaggies on games...crappy sound chip, but people stll bought it for the fact that it was SONY playstation 2...simple as that...and wel, i know people that got the thing just because it was something by sony and they wanted it to go with there sony tv's and cd players and dvd's players...
i can garrauntee that if the playstation 3 has major faults like over heating or crappy graphics or whatever it isn't going to affect the sales of the machine in any way or form...

Another new version of the PS2? Isn't this like dressing up an old lady to go to the prom at this point?

From what I've read this only only affects some new ps2's made in Japan (a ceramic white version). It doesn't affect the silver ps2's over here. There's some ps1 games it's meant to have issues with, and it's supposed to have issues with the Tekken 3 port in Tekken 5.
This is why you can't trust anything you read in the Inquirer, because they don't give you the whole story. I really despise biased/selective journalism (if you can call it that) like that.

Wha-? They tell you it's the new japanese version "Satin silver" ie. your ceramic white. They tell you it has some issues with ps1 games and some PS2 games. It also gives you the link to the original IGN article from where it got it's information. Hence the reason why this article is ONLY AN OVERVIEW. If the Inquirer was the one to break the story there would be more information. Otherwise they exercise something called professionalism and acknowledge the source of the news....
I don't get your whole post. You hate biased journalism, but your whole point of view reeks of biasedness....
hypocrite?

They redesigned the motherboard and/or processors to be easier and cheaper to produce.
They do it every now and then, even without external cosmetic changes.
This time someone has screwed it. At least the problems doesn't seem too big.

The slimline has always had a few problems Sony should just come clean.
10,000 games are available for PS1&2 about 70 games have a problem.
I would guess these are gmaes that have squeezed a bit more out of the playstation by programming outside the guidlines.
At the end of the day if you need to play these games you can get a 2nd hand PS1 or 2 for next to nothing nowdays. If it don't bother you then the machines are great. Next price drop and I'm getting a slimline PS2. I am guessing there will be one about the same time as the 360 launch.

Not true. It's, like, two pounds, fits in some of my pockets (yes they are big pockets), and plays blue discs without having to send it all the way to Sony for three weeks to wait for them to repair it. And mine's never overheated, but that's probably because I don't play it for six hours at a time and unplug it when I'm done.

What, biased against the Inquirer? You make that sound like a negative...
I admit I didn't read the article properly, but I just assumed it was another one of their bs articles, and assumed they were saying all silver slimline ps2's had this problem. Ok, so in this case my fault for not reading it properly, but that doesn't change the fact that the Inquirer is still a lousy news site (that reports rumors as fact), and they've been proven wrong on so many occasions in the past I've lost count.
BioHazard said:

Everybody knows how works the Inquirer. But sometimes the rumors are true, so I don't see why lots of people hate them.
You have the read the Inquirer with a grain of salt (or two), and I really like how they write their articles. I'm tired of boring tech news.
