Well,here's the problem.
Occasionally when browsing the internet or playing a game the mouse suddenly stops responding.
The mouse pointer that is.
I can tell by the screen the actual mouse is working, because i'm still able to select and click things, but the pointer just freezes on the screen, and won't move anymore.

What can be the cause of this problem and how do i solve it?

PS2 mouse or USB mouse? Optical mouse or plain roller ball mouse?

Also, which version of Windows? I remember on Win98 there was a problem where the mouse pointer would disappear in some application windows (not where it should, I mean things like Solitaire!), and the only way to cure it was to lower Win98's graphical acceleration...

USB and a plain roller ball.

How to clean a ball mouse (http://www.helpwithpcs.com/maintenance/mouse_problem_maintenance.htm)

Sometimes gunk can build up on the rollers

otherwise, it may be a USB problem, which can be more difficult to solve.

Cleaned the rollers.
Now let's see how things go.

Yep, just go get yourself an optical mouse. Clean those problems right up.
