What's the story about development on quake 1 engine?
When it begun? Was it the official start? When was the quake 2 engine bought?
Basically, I want to know, what period of time 3dr used q1engine for DNF.

From early 1997 to they got the Quake 2 source code in Mid December 1997. They licensed the Quake 2 Engine in early 1997, but didn't get the source code until December 1997. Because of Christmas and stuff they didn't really do anything with it until January 1998. In think the Quake 2 Engine license was annouced in April 1997. So they NEVER intended to ship the Quake 1 Engine version.
Research on DNF(back then DN4) could have started VERY early 1997 and perhaps VERY late 1996.

Scott said that they'd been working on the game since January 1997.

Didn't he just say early 1997 or perhaps "start of the year".
"Start of the year" doesn't HAVE to be January 1997.
Do you know when Todd quit ?
AFAIK they only used the Q1 engine to get familiar with the Quake engine and developer tools.

Yes, something like that.

We really didn't use Quake 1. When we were finishing Shadow Warrior a couple of guys were playing with Quake 1, while we were waiting for Quake 2 code (late 97/early 98). We didn't really start even hiring people for DNF until late 97, after we shipped Shadow Warrior, and into early 98. We then prototyped some stuff in Quake 2 from Jan 98 until about E3 or so. Then we moved to Unreal 1. The rest is history, long and painful as it's been at times http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's not really accurate.

Well Scott's words were "we've actually been working on the game since January".
I understand working in this case means prototyping.

I could make some assumptions from this sentence, but I'm too old and wise to not to do so. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
BTW, George, did you check SW6:ITP?

And there where only 4 guys "playing" with Quake 1 tech, correct ?

I am inclined to believe that they wheren't even prototyping back in Januray 97, but they probably mostly did some EVEN more basic research back then.

Yes, probably.

I would say that they just made some concepts and thought about some stuff which might be possible...nothing special at all http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They probably also decided upon the engine during that time.

It must have been just a Dream (http://web.archive.org/web/19961221053057/http://3drealms.com/) in Scotts head for him to put it on your site in dec 96 then http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I like this part on the main page.
Welcome to the Apogee / 3D Realms Web Site!
Call 1-800-3DREALMS to order any game you see on this site.
I ordered DNF for $19.95 i believe 10 years ago http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Actually the wayback machine doesn't necessarily take everthing from the same date.

Besides that might have been the side-scroller.

UPCOMING GAMES
Duke Nukem Forever
Possibly Scott was jumping the gun by putting Duke Nukem Forever on your site under "upcoming games" but comeon George,he wasn't talking about a side-scroller at all...you know it...i know it and every Duke fan from the late 90's know how much he chirped about DNF (the sequel to Duke3d)
Side-scroller my arse http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
How many times did you tell him to clam up on other forums? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Don't you know that there was side-scroller named DNF which got cancelled ?
3D Realms thought the name was to cool to drop and re-named what was then named DN4 as DNF.

LINK?
Personly it's going to take at least 1 to convince me that Duke Nukem Forever in Dec 96 wasn't intended as a sequel to the very cool Duke3d.
Sounds like some little cover up story to me http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hhg.gif

Here (http://www.planetduke.com/duke4/faq/general.shtml#1.5) is one. Here (http://rinkworks.com/apogee/s/2.5.shtml) is another one. It was Keith Schuler's project if I am not mistaken.

The side-scroller was a sequel to DN3D, only in the same vein as Duke 1 & 2 meaning it was next in the line of 3DRealms games. Just because Duke3d was huge didn't mean all the duke games were going to be FPSs. That was the thinking at the time. Didn't you know?
There were still some people who rooted for the new Duke attitude in a platformer which is why I guess DN:MP was made, although they take great pains to disassociate the two games.

Correct, and when they decided to cancel DNF and continue with Duke 4 they decided to keep the name DNF because it sounded a hell of a lot better then Duke Nukem 4. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
