View Full Version : A few Questions

Ever since my dad downloaded the shareware version of Duke Nukem (1), I have been a great fan of Apogee and its games. Recently, I was forced to downgrade to my 486, and having nothing else to do, had an instant craving for the old Apogee games. After a few minutes of searching, I managed to locate Monuments of Mars, Pharaoh's Tomb, and Arctic Adventure. I unzipped them, shut down into DOS, and tried to play them. They each had an error, either kicking me to DOS or freezing my computer altogether. My question is: Do these games no longer work on newer computers (486+) due to memory allocations, etc (and is it also why they, in addition to Dark Ages, are not in the Apogee catalog on the website any more?), or is it my computer in specific?
Also, any possibility on releasing the full versions of these games in a large "Classic" bundle or simply as freeware?
Anyone with anything to add or respond anything is welcome.

If it's a memory problem, then you just have to free up more conventional memory. Assuming you're playing these games on that 486, you'd have to run memmaker or whatever memory thing you have.

If that doesn't help, you have to physically remove TSRs and unneeded drivers to free up more memory.

I also suspect it might be hardware. The more recent "big" games (Duke3D, Shadow Warrior, Doom, Quake, etc.) work fine in Win 98 DOS mode on my pentium II 350mHz clone with 128 megs RAM and an 8 meg Millenium AGP 220

ROTT works fine also but you can't install from the CD - you have to first copy the ROTTINST files to the target directory, turn read-only attribute off, then set it up.

Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny work OK but graphics seem a bit too "fast".

Butthe earlier games (Commander Keen 1-6, Duke Nukem I, etc.) run like crap - jittery graphics, bad sound, etc.

The reason you are having this problem is because the computer is too fast. A lot of our early games (Dark Ages, Monuments of Mars, Pharaoh's Tomb, etc) were produced before today's speed demon computers existed. As such, they can't run properly on fast computers, and will generally give an error similar to "Runtime error at....".

To get around this, you'll need to slow down the computer. Either use a software package, or the computer's internal slowdown feature (if it exists). Check your computer's manual for info on how to do this. If these don't work, you can use the program that I am attaching to this E-Mail message. We've tested it here, and it works on the program you're having problems with. Please make sure to read the documentation for this program (called Mo'Slo) before you attempt to run it.

You can get Mo'Slo here:

That explains why Commander Keen plays like crap on my puter. It's a good thing I still got a 286 and 386 siting around, I'll have to get a monitor for it and play my favs.
