News reporter: An obviously psychotic man ran, equiped with a loaded and working shotgun, in the entrance hall of the well known Mirage hotel in Las Vegas and asked an employee if he knows what for a day today is. Right in the moment when he wanted to answer the man took out his shotgun, fired in the air and shouted "it´s done f*ckers..."
At the moment the unknown man is arrested and a psychologist will arrive soon...

It probably won't get anything like a metnion in the news like Halo 2 or any other media-anticipated game is (I mean media, DNF's been shying away that it probably won't get media coverage.

However, I can definitely seeing it instantly causing clogged threads on practically every video-game forum as well as any that are even linked to gaming. Not only that but comic artists such as VG Cats or Penny Arcade will all start furiously thinking of a comic to put up to coincide with the announcement.

Now the only thing I must ask myself is: will I be alive when this happens? :P

Something like the E3 Halo2 movie would be awesome. Although it would probably steal the show, I doubt that will happen.

Maybe the next E3 will have some big coverage of Prey and the first, but small, tease of Duke Nukem Forever at it’s end.

Doesn’t matter how though, I hope 3drealms makes something great of the announcement.

Ha! I don't think so. This is what's going to happen: Approximately 5.2 seconds after the announcement every forum on the web will have at least one 50 page DNF thread, choke full of heated pointless arguing and name calling. It will make the HL2/Doom3 arguments look like a group hug.

Who cares about the gold announcement? Thats so far away its not funny.
Im more curious about the 'its close' announcement, ie when they start releasing media and firing up the old hype machine again. They said this will happen about 6 months before the gold date.
So every day that goes by without a screenshot says that the gold date is still at least 6 months away. However, we could wake up any morning and find that a screenshot or even a video has been released. Thats all I care about at the moment; 6 months is just too far ahead for my lil' brain to think about.

Personally, I agree with Joes comment, once news starts coming out (either about a screen shot, or about goldness), it will spread like wildfire. I dont see how a game like DNF could possibly need 6 months of hype... more like a week. However if the system requirements are high, they have to hype it for a long time, in order to allow folks to save up for a new computer. Its all about marketing unfortunately. But I guess thats understandable, after spending a decade on this thing, it makes sense that they want to get every penny they can out of it.

You guys have absolutely nothing AT ALL to base that on.

They said this will happen about 6 months before the gold date.

George has just recently said that they NO plans in regard to how long the hype period shall be. So the fact that hey aren't hyping it currently doesn't really say anything about how long away it is.

This kind of thread has happened before and the results are usually swept under the rug.

They would rather post the good word at shacknews instead of here, because then everyone won't go ballistic as they usually do on every bit of news.

Of course, with a gone gold announcement, it's different, because that is the kind of statement that doesn't draw the same responses as would "we just hired someone or we are looking for another mapper, or we are looking at implementing a newer physics package."

Interesting, I wonder why he would explicitly come out and say that they have no such plans, when their position has been '6 months of hype' for as long as I can recall.

Again, I think the hype-period has everything to do with the system requirements of the game. If you need a brand new $3000 system to play DNF, then they obviously gotta hype it a lot and for a long time. On the other hand, if it should be able to run on average or even below average hardware, then they dont need much hype at all. After all, this is Duke Nukem Forever were talking about.

As always, I find it hilarious how 3dr has NO plans with regard to DNFs release, NO clue how much longer it will be, NO timelines, NO deadlines, NO milestones, NO NOTHING. They expect to wake up one morning and say "holy shit, I guess its done, lets burn a whole bunch of copies and sell it or something!!!11"

You are COMPLETELY misunderstading me. They DO have a internal schedule. They just don't have any plans for when the they hype will start relative to the end point of that schedule.

However it WILL be something like: George:" Holy shit I had an epiphany lets show the game to the public".

However that doesn't mean that they have abandoned their policy on not overhyping their games. The policy was set for a reason you know. The policy doesn't imply that they have already set a date when they will start the hype. All George has said is that they HAVEN'T already set such a date.

I think that George will be visited by 3 ghosts, of duke nukem past present and future. Each will show him duke from certain era's. Then george will right a book and get sued for plagerism--because it will to mirror a certain dicken's novel. But after that he will realize the real meaning of Duke and release screen shots. Not a moment later than that though he will be eaten by a grue. Poor George.
