Work has been good the last few months, I've gotten to do some more ground-up work rather than polish and I think it's some of the stronger work I've done in my career so far. The issues that have plagued the production still linger around a bit to be sure, but we're still moving forward well. And apparently we're having some contact with the gaming press for the first time in ages, we'll see what comes of that in the near future.
Part of his blog...
So, looks like 3dr still isnīt (or wasnīt) "fast" enough http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Otherwise, that must mean that theyīre still very ambitious...I hope that at least =)

" Happy *way* belated holidays. 3DR and I have decided to part ways, completely professional and nothing personal, I wish those guys the best of luck and am sad to be leaving so many friends. But not much to do now except move forward. Another move is now imminent (out of Dallas though, yay!), a few locations are at the front of the runnings but it's still early."
So it sounds like a VERY amicable parting.

So they now have 31 developers+4 administrative people, which is 35 for the 3D Realms total. Do the 31 developers include Scott Miller?
It's good that Neil left on positive terms.

I'm not gonna confirm or deny anything, as George would probably castrate me if I detailed out the entire staff.
But I'm curious to know how you guys arrived at these numbers.

Why would that be? I honestly don't see how it could reveal anything out of the game, and it would be simple enough mention those who don't want to be detailed only by name. At the very least, I think for most of us a simple number of those who are currently working on said project would suffice.

Well George has given the total number of people at different occasions, the rest is just a matter of adding people which have been known to be hired and subtracting anyone known to have left. There is also the fact taht when you hire for new positions you give a number for the position as game designer you say the following about the company: "Small close-knit company (30-ish people), that focuses all our efforts on one killer title at a time". So it would seem that Firefly's number is pretty accurate.

Well the good Annihilator asked a question. Should we not answer him just because our numbers may be slightly out?
In December 2004 George said that there were 27 team members and 4 administrative staff, and that they were bringing on a couple more people.
http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=dnf&Number=725578#Post725578
That makes it up to 29. We know there's been at least one addition to this figure. So I don't think it makes much difference if you ignore the job notices. However, I was going from the previous level designer notice.

Yeah, but the level designer notice I linked to was posted in April. I doubt it took those people more than 5 months to arrive at the 3DR HQ, and I doubt George or Scott would say they had 30 people on board when they really had 37 or 38.

But why the change from the precise 30 to the vague 30-ish ?
Perhaps they have hired people without us knowing ?
They don't necessarily have to advertise it on the net perhaps some of the developer have known someone talentend which they have hired.

George said they had 4 administrative staff. If you add Scott then that makes 5 extra people.
Kristian Joensen
11-02-2005, 06:44 AM
But where does that leave Joe ?
Does he count as administrative staff ?
How about Kevin Green and Bryan Turner ?
If they and Joe count as "administartive staff" and the administrative staff consists of 4 people then those 4 people are: Joe Siegler, Kevin Green, Bryan Turner and Steven Blackburn.
Kristian Joensen
11-02-2005, 07:25 AM

There will always be conclusions, with or without new details...

We don't KNOW squat -- and George likes to keep it that way (Areal 51 http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). Besides, I did say "preliminary". They could be testing some new technologies, gameplay mechanics, conceptual artwork and that kind of thing. Of course they probably wouldn't start in earnest until after DNF ships, and after whatever patches might need to be done, and most importantly after some serious R & R.

Actually they told us that. I agree with what you say. I am sure they are ALWAYS thinking about game design ideas, but in a more general manner. However they might well be thinking/researching gameplay ideas and stuff in the context of their next game already. But that would be the EXTREMELY early research phases.

25 people devoted to level design, art and animation? efficient artists are good and all, but having a solid idea and storyline is a must.

They surely hav someone else doing that..!
For instance, Feng Zhu (http://www.fengzhudesign.com/clients.html) the Concept artist... He isn't a part of the 3DR staff, but he's working on concepts anyways... (Is he still working with Concepts for DNF..?!)
That's exactly the same thing with Storyline and stuff i guess...

Erm, he mentions the game in that very sentence; Jedi Knight (aka Dark Forces II).
There's a walkthrough available here (http://www.jediknight.net/trail/guide.html), look for level 15.
The Falling Ship is the most unique map in the game, but Jedi Knight contains very impressive level design all around, with an emphasis on vertically orientated architecture that I don't think has been rivalled by any other game before or since.
The JK demo (http://www.3dgamers.com/dlselect/games/jediknight/jedidemo.exe.html) (level 9, Fuel Station Launch) provides a nice sampling of this particular strength.

Um, Jedi Knight? The 'falling ship' is known among gamers as one of the most memorable levels of the game, if not of all Star Wars games, for many reasons. Some say it's frustratingly difficult, others say it's because it's fun, other say it's because of the crazy architecture.
You're in an imperial Destroyer that's crashing down on a planet. It's memorable because it's one of the first levels in a true 3D game to pit the player on uneven, sloped floors. The ship is careening down to its doom and you have to escape before it crashes. No game had succesfully done that kind of level design before and it stuck in gamers' minds.
I absolutely loved that level, and I'm glad 3DR is looking for designers who'd be able to recreate those kinds of experiences. Hopefully DNF will contain memorable levels as well.

No you are wrong. It quite clearly says that they are looking a senior designer and level designers, plural not singular. So they are looking for more than 1 level designer.
