My mum is an architect, and has 3ds max for her work. She has verion 8, and I am wondering if this version will work with max payne 2 modelling, if I install the plugins and stuff, or is it only for version 5.
If it is for version 5 only, where can I get that? They only sell version 8 now.

Lol Sayantan, both times I've created a topic, you're the first person to post!
But anyway, do you know if it will work or not?

No. All necessary plugins have been compiled for version 5.1. Also I don't think there's a legal way to get that version of the application at this point. That's the dilemma with outdated games.

Then where the hell am I supposed to get it? How'd did you guys get version 5?

They got it back in the day when it was available... that's the story, and they're sticking to it.

Try Blender (http://www.blender.org) to make models and then get someone to export them for you with 3DS Max 5.1.

You can model your thing with 3ds and export it with Milkshape3d

Having 3dsmax 5 opens soo many doors to mp2 modding, It really is frustrating if you dont have it. It is impossible to LEGALY obtain a copy, unless there are used copys floating around on www.ebay.com. (http://www.ebay.com.) If you do happen to get a copy of 3dsmax 5 tho, here is the site where you can download 3dsmax SP1 and 3dsmax 5.1 update.
Link (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/index?siteID=123112&id=2334435&linkID=5573636)
p.s. Since when has 3ds 8 been out? I remember when i first started modding, 3dsmax 6 was the newest!

We only got it a couple of days ago, which was why I was thinking that a new version would rock. Unfortunately I was wrong.
How much does milkshape cost, and can I edit the skeletons and stuff in it? If anyone knows a way I can get it, send me an email at Squirtle50@hotmail.com.

Milkshape costs around 20 USD as far as I remember. Quite cheap IMO.

You can download evaluation copy here:

That reminds, that's one program I bought a license for that I still have to install. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

Thanks guys, I've got Milkshape demo, but is there anything else I need? plugins and stuff?
Also are there any tutorials anywhere for how to create Max Payne 2 characters in Milkshape?

ehh, Has anyone actualy tried the mp2 plugins with max 8? Most plugins in version 5 and up work in the newer versions. 4 to 5,6,7,8 is the big issue. I would almost be suprised if it did not work.

I think it was found that they didn't work in 3DS Max 6.
So any version 6 or later they will not work in.
I may be wrong though. But that's what I remember reading.
@Jaborwocky:
If you have the latest version, you don't need any more plugins as such for MS3D. But I would download the Mesa 6.3.2 DLLs they recommend to make it more stable. As I remember the program crashing a lot when I loaded MP2 models and I don't think I had those.
For skinning you will either want the DDS plugins for Photoshop (http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html) or the DDS plugin for GIMP (http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/dds/). These allow you to open and save DDS textures.
I use GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) myself. A free, open-source alternative to Photoshop. You can also get the GIMPshop (http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294) 'hack' to make GIMP appear more like Photoshop (e.g the context of menus) if you are making a transition from the Photoshop world.
This also makes it easier to follow Photoshop tuts and adapt them for GIMP.

Well ...... it doesn't work with any of the later version. That's confirmed truth.

Hardly anyone has a legal copy of 3DS me included, but i have never had a problem with that. Not many can afford a 3,500$ program for a hobby. When the hobby turns into a profession, i'm glad to give Discreet an access to my wallet.

Indeed. Me too. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Fortunately the company who'll hire me in the future will bear the cost, not me. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

You can do all the modelling in 3dsmax and when you're ready you just need to export your model intoa .3ds format and then import it to Milkshape. In there you export the model to game.

WTF, dude... If you mean "Skinning," it's not really done in 3Ds Max. It's done in Photoshop. If you want to UVUnwrap models, then V8 will do, although to compile them again for MP2, you'll need 3DSMax version 5.1 with Service pack one, if I my memory serves me correctly.
But I'm not sure that's what you meant, as English doesn't seem to be your first (or second, or third) language. Please make an effort to make coherent, legible posts. Spelling errors are fine, but if you type phoenetic Jamaican, then it's tough for people to answer you.

This is not Jamaican language. It's called "wannabe-kewl-language". This language belongs to the country "n00bland".
@ Bacon Master:
Sorry for the offense, but that's very bad to speak like that in a serious thread.
