View Full Version : Source code?

As an up-and-coming programmer and student I am interested in seeing source code from older games. I've seen source code released for Wolf3D and Doom on Id Software's site -- is Apogee/3DRealms willing to release the source code of old games like Commander Keen or Duke Nukem for educational purposes?

I think that is a good idea. I would like to see the Keen and Duke 1-2 codes.

John Romero said he was going to get me the CK source code, but he never did, <sigh>, I'll try again though, maybe he forgot, I dunno. He's the only one who has it, though.

Don't count on it. There's legal implications in doing that. Meaning he doesn't own it and doesn't have the legal recourse to release it on his own. Keen is owned by id Software, and only id can do something like that.

OK, we probably can't get CK. What about Apogee games?

We don't have any plans to release our source code.

Can anyone direct me to a site with game code, preferrably for simple "side-scroller" games? (I alreadyknow about Wolf3D and Doom.)

What's a source code?

Source code is the stuff that tells a game or application how to run. Source code is written in a programming language -- the most common is probably C or C++.

Yeah, and if you want to change a certain thing in the game, you can do something called "hacking" (which most of you already know about). That's where you can go into the source code and play around with values, like lives, ammo, money, etc. Or you can also make whole new parts of the game for yourself. But, I wouldn't suggest it because
any warranties and such become void. And if you sell your version of the game, it's illegal under copyright laws (I just know this stuff, so, don't ask me how I know, okay!) and you can be put in the slammer for that for quite a looooong time!!!!
