tough one, so many cool ones out there, but at the moment i like the contra bass or whatever its called, the big standing bass used allot in jazz n stuff. i love the warm woody sound http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

second comes the lovably metallic sound from the electric guitar http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

and third would be. . erm. . . the string section i think, like opus said http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif i like songs with strings http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tenor Sax... I could play pretty damn good when I was in college.

But saddly, it's in the shop and it's been so long since I've played... I probably suck now. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Towards the end of my last year of college, somebody opened my case up and dumped water on my horn. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

All the pads molded, and everything needs to be replaced. Damn horn is old to... still has real pearl keys.

Lets just say the little bastard that did it, got a bit more than a bloody nose. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The drums. It's what I play, because it's the only instrument that "makes sense" to me. I listen to piano or guitar and, while I can appreciate their melodic qualities, I cannot understand how a human being can make coherent sounds and music come out of those instruments. It totally baffles me. I'm in awe every time I see it.

But a drum, that makes sense to me. It's rythm. No notes, no chords, you just keep the beat. And even odd beat patterns like Metallica's or Rush's make sense to me. I "get" a drummer when he plays. I can see and feel what he hits when he hits it, and why a drum track was constructed the way it was. I can understand it. It comes naturally to me. That's why it's my favourite instrument -- it's the only one I can understand.

I like them all to be honest. All instruments have a use for music. I like instruments that can be used really creatively too, like in "Vermilion" by Slipknot, the begining sound was pretty cool. (my brother said it was a guitar anyways)

Sorry for being vague. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

I initially meant what instrument you like to hear, but by all means feel free to list the ones you like to play as well, since there are quite a few here that like to play with their own instrument. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Mmmm...this is really hard. I guess for me it would have to be the guitar. It's also the intrument that I play.

I'm so tired of this attitude.

Classical music is ***** old. There are new "classics" to move on to.

Except the new 'classics' are several folds inverior to the 'old' ones. And of course the fact classical music is still being written today.

I guess you are one of those who think 'classical' just means old and have no knowledge whatever of what type of music it really entiles. Frankly i'm sick and tired of this attitude. When something it's a 'classic' it means it's bloody timeless, not 'old'...

How are they inferior? This whole issue is similar to "my religion is right and yours isn't".

Classical music is timeless. But it's also old. My issue with it is it's as if people won't move on to new things and recognize the "newer" classics -- stuck in the past.

It has nothing to do with personal beleif, it's a question of personal taste and knowledge.

Modern popular music is amateur music. Most people have very limited understanding of music and cannot grasp some of the more advanced concepts.

Perhaps saying classical is 'superior' is wrong, but it's most defenatly greater.

phait said:

If it's timeless then it cannot possibly be old.

phait said:

Nobody is stuck in the past. I still listen to modern composers. The problem is that the 'new' things you are pointing at are simply not that interesting.

Then obviously this is a very subjective issue.

Old/timeless - classical music, the period it is from - that's old.

In the end I think classical vs contemporary is like apples vs oranges.

^ Have it your way, i don't care, but it's pretty interesting that i see no attempt to defent 'modern' classics against classical classics. Why is that?

Not quite. Timless implies an absence of time. Old it's a measure of time. They negate each other.

If something it's old then it fails to be timeless, quite simply...

That doesn't invalidate my opinion on the matter.

My entire point is to me it feels like people hung up on classics won't recognize the good music of today or even 10, 20 years ago that may also be classics as well. Whether it's inspired by classical music or not.

It's like in 1960's/1970's what was considered a classic car was probably a Model T. And it still is a classic today. But did they even think a Ford Mustang or a Dodge Charger would be a classic then? Most likely not - and look what they're considered now - classics.

Well, it depends by what you mean with old.

If you mean old music because it was written a long time ago, then yes, it's old, but in that sense, isn't music written 10 years ago also old?

If by old you mean it's now obsolete, then you are massively mistaken. Modern music doesn't even begin to tap the achievements of classical music, and by the way it's going, it never will.

phait said:

The problem with your point is that i went from modern music to classical in the first place. I'm not 'stuck' in any past, i just moved on to bigger and better things...

I'm not sure that analogy applies to music.

A car becomes a classic because it rapresents a certain era. Classics in music become as such purely on their inherent value. A Beethoven String Quartet is as great now as it was then. Are we going to compare a Model T to a modern car?

Seconds out, round one...*ding**ding*

I love guitars..nothing is more satisfying in music to me than a screaming guitar solo. But while we're on the subject of the more classical of music, I do really enjoy some orchestral stuff..not really the grand kind the likes of John Williams...but the mellower stuff.

I especially like the music that was used in Platoon and the Max Payne theme.

Is it even possible for you to explain why classical music is better than other music, without simply saying that it is?

Anyway, I prefer to play the piano. I like to listen to all kinds of instruments, can't pick a favorite there.

I never said it's 'better', i said it's superior.

Music is composed by many different elements, such as melody, rythmn, harmony ect. and the way classical handles those elements is simply far more compelling.

Popular music it's just too naive to make a comparison. Even progressive rock music and modern death metal pale in comparison.

Again, this doesn't imply popular music is bad music, but for those of us who prefer music that stimulates both the intellect as well as the heart, popular music just doesn't cut it.

The fallancy in Phait argument is that he thinks popular music is exacly the same as classical, just newer. I cannot even begin to express how wrong that is...

But my favorite instrument is drums! I always listen to the drumtracks the most in an album. Might be because I'm a drummer myself.

Which is the same (http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=superior). If not, what does 'superior' mean?

So, other music besides classical is incapable of stimulating one's heart and mind? Why is it so? What is it with the sound of classical music that makes it superior and more capable of doing the aforementioned?

Just don't say it's better at this and that, state how it is better than this and that. Dig deeper and try to find something solid, cause if you don't, it's just emotive reasoning on your part.

That's pretty interesting, i never heard of something like that before, though i suppose most drummers may actually have a similar conception, thus, their choise of instument.

That's propably why you like Rush so much, their drummer sometimes seem to paint melody lines using rhythms...
